We have had the pleasure of bringing four children up in this charming part of rural France and even after 12 years are still in love with the area finding new things each year.
The cottages offer the opportunity for parties to stay but to each have their own individual unit.
It offers families an opportunity to meet others in a relaxed and tranquil setting.

Just returned from this amazing place in the middle of the french countryside but well within walking distance of a great local restaurant :-)
The owners are very friendly and helpful although not intrusive and will assist you with any little problems you may encounter.
The properties are everything you expect of typical french gites of a certain age and style. They contain everything you could possibly need during your stay. We settled in right away and felt immediately "at home"......
Words cannot convey how much we enjoyed our recent stay at this amazing location and will certainly return in the future.....so that much say alot about how much we enjoyed our holiday at "Les Espioles"
We had a wondeful family holiday at Les Espioles,
"Our" gite was a home from home with everything you need in the kitchen.
The children really enjoyed playing badmington in the gardens and the pools were great .
David and Beverley are discreet hosts but who are on hand to answer any quiries or to help you book canoeing for the day or a table at the local restaurant.
All in all we had a lovely stay, would definately recommend it
We are amazed at the negative reviews for these properties as they give in our view a rather poor impression of the accomodation that is available to hire.
The properties are several hundred years old and were were constructed at a time when a panoramic view across the beautiful valley was not uppermost in the minds of the builders ! So they are a little dark inside but that is how they were built and are all the better for it. They have been sympathetically restored and retain their "choclate box" attractiveness from outside and are pleasently furnished internally as well.
The construction of the cottages does mean there are a couple of quicky features in the gite we stayed in but that surely adds to the charm? However, given their design "quirks", it might be worthwhile checking with the owners if your party includes any persons who may have some mobilty restrictions or young inquisitive children.
The bed in our gite appeared to be a standard british width of 4 foot 6......not king size but big enough :-)
The property was well presented on arrival and the hosts were both attentive but not intrusive during our stay.
The thick walls do their best at keeping the heat out as the weather during our stay was unbelivably hot...so hot in fact my magnetic GB sticker fused itself to the car bodywork !
The local area is not as "touristy" as other parts of the Dordogne which is an added bonus. The local town (Souillac) is attractive, has good market, several large supermarkets and lots of reasonably priced restaurants.
An added bonus is the local hotel about a third of a mile down the road that serves up lovely locally sourced meals that you can enjoy with a glass or two of wine and not worry about having to drive back to the gite :-)
We stayed at "Les Espioles" during June so cannot comment on the music festival issue.
We would not hesitate in recommending this accomodation to all of our friends and have booked again for a return visit in June where will will enjoy watching England beat France in the Euro 2016 football final....fingers crossed :-)
It is a place of calm and tranquillity in a beautiful area of France and we love it!
My husband, myself and our three boys (ages 13, 10, and 7) stayed in one of the converted barns (Le Pic Vert) for a week at the end of May 2015. This really is a great place, with attractive, traditional buildings set in lovely, spacious grounds. With two pools and a football field the boys were well entertained throughout, which is no easy feat ! This location is rural France at its best, but with easy access to lots of attractions, and particularly for family canoeing on the river which is a must !
Beverley and David were most welcoming and really helpful throughout our stay. We found our accommodation to be of good standard and well equipped which met all of our needs and expectations.
All in all, highly recommended ! We are booking to return later this year.
We went to stay at Rouges Gorges in mid-August for a 3 generation family get-together. David and Beverley were polite and professional throughout but there are several points which we feel other potential guests should be aware of; good and bad.
Superb location - lovely views and great for cycling. Easy access to Dordogne sights.
Good outdoor space - great for young children, alarms on pools etc.
Lovely large kitchen - beautiful vaulted ceiling and fireplace.
Helpful and polite hosts - Bev and David were professional and kind throughout.
We stayed during the local village festival which (apparently) happens at the same time every year. I had in mind elderly Frenchmen playing accordians when told of this on arrival, but this was not the case: it is in fact 3 nights of very late and loud rave music with accompanying screaming Frenchman on a PA system, only 300m away from the gite - until 3AM. Neither we, or the other guests were able to sleep properly and it culminated in us leaving a day early and booking into a campsite in order to get a night's sleep before the drive home. Clearly the running of this festival is out of the hands of the owners, but we were not warned of this before booking - so check before committing!
Seperately, the sleeping accomodation is not what we expected and does not live up to the photos and text on the website - it is nice to look at but less pratical to live in, especially if you are a mixed generation family with young
children or elderly family members. The wooden floors are loud and echoey and carry any sounds, waking light sleepers easliy. Furthermore, there is no door on the twin room (just a curtain) and nothing at all seperating the further single room from the twin.
The 'large' double is not. It's medium-sized at best - I could not stand on my side of the bed due to the low ceiling.
I was completely honest with Beverley about my disappointment and said everything I have written to her in person. To her credit, she politely took the points on board, she was profusely apologetic about the noise from the festival (although unable to act) and we agreed to disagree on some issues concerning the accomodation.
We were 3 generations on a family get-together. The children loved the amenities for physical activity - pools, trampoline, table tennis and spent every available minute on them. The adults enjoyed the countryside location - really away from it all - and yet within an hour's drive of most of the interesting things to do and see in the eastern end of the Dordogne ( and there are many).
Dave and Beverley could not have been more solicitous and the cottages were in first class condition with everything on hand.
We could not recommend the place more highly.
