The property is large and private. In front of the house is a small field - perfect for the kids to run around in. A creek runs along the front of the property and provide a shady area to relax in hammocks (provided) or explore under rocks for salamanders and crayfish.

Behind the house rises a wooded mountain and the national forest. There is over a half mile of hiking trails on the property, with more exploring to be had in the national forest.

There is so much to do in the area for the outdoor enthusiast: Hiking, paddling, fishing, shopping, sightseeing, beer tasting, wine tasting... and of course relaxing!

Great local hikes include the Bartram Trail, Cowee Nature Trail, Rufus Morgan Trail, Kimsey Creek Trail, and numerous access points to the Appalachian Trail.

Paddle down the Little Tennessee River, or go whitewater rafting at the Nantahala Outdoor Center.

Fish for bass, catfish, carp and walleye in the Little Tennessee River, or try your hand at catching trout in one of the many smaller rivers and creeks up in the high country.

There is plenty of good grub at local hangouts like the Sunset Restaurant or Fat Buddies Barbecue. Fine dining can be had at Root + Barrel Kitchen and Cafe Rel.

About Brian Murphey

I live and work in Atlanta with my wife and our two children. I grew up in Florida and went to college there. My wife grew up in Pennsylvania and went to college in Minnesota and North Carolina.

Brian Murphey purchased this house in 2013

Why Brian Murphey chose North Carolina Mountains

My parents purchased the cottage back in 1980. They brought my brothers and me here nearly every summer. As a boy, I loved exploring the woods, looking for gems in the creek, trying to catch a glimpse of a deer or turkey, and wandering to my heart's content. When my parents decided it was time to sell the cottage in 2013, my wife and I didn't hesitate to buy it: We both love the area, and we wanted to give our boys the same chance to explore nature and wander freely.

What makes this house unique

The property backs up to national forest land, so there is plenty of wildlife to see - if you are quiet and patient! Deer, turkey, fox and grouse move quietly through the woods or down by the creek. Birds fill the woods with song. We are near the Cowee valley - the ancient religous center of the Cherokee nation, and renowned for rubies and sapphires.

Fantastic house in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect place to stay whether for a short weekend or an entire season. The location, nestled in a small valley, is incredibly quiet and peaceful with hiking right out the back door and a gorgeous slice of sky to see the stars from the deck.

We stayed here for a three-day weekend and was sad when it was time to leave. The house is perfectly appointed with everything you could need or want, from great kitchen amenities to a fantastic grill on the deck, an outdoor fire ring and gas fireplace inside.

Two of us came with our mountain bikes and used the house as base camp for a few days of hiking and riding. Some of the best trails in the area were all within a 45 minute drive, no matter which direction we turned after leaving the driveway and lane.

For the evenings we enjoyed heading into town for microbrews on the porch of some fabulous local breweries and great restaurants.

I'd recommend anyone to stay here but be warned, you may never want to leave!

Great Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful hiking or any activity basecamp. Comfortable, clean, well supplied, great outside environment with access to trails literally 10yds from back door. Firepit with good wood supply. Ambience inside from gas fireplace, nice kitchen. Will definitely look to see if it's available next time I go. DW

Relaxing cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

The moment I drove up the private road to this wonderful cabin in the woods I relaxed. The cabin has everything one needs for a long weekend away and the setting is quiet and beautiful, trails right in your back yard, yet just minutes away from downtown Franklin. The Owners were so good about suggesting places to see, hikes and towns and places to eat. They emailed the day I arrived to make sure everything was fine (it was) and that we were comfortable (we were). Five out of five stars for this wonderful getaway cabin.

Great place for families

  • 5 of 5

When we walked in to the cabin my 4 year old son, upon seeing the toys and games, exclaimed "this mountain house has every toy I've ever wanted!" He loved the bunk beds, the hammocks outside and hiking the trail that is right behind the house. It also has a great front porch for sitting and relaxing. There is WiFi and a smart TV. We had no cellphone service but there is a landline in the house for emergencies.

Admittedly we didn't spend much time at the house as we were there for my husband to drive the Tail of the Dragon and the sky bridge. But this place has everything you need if you're staying for a longer period of time. It is close to downtown Franklin which is a charming little town. Try the food at Root & Barrel.

The property was very clean. The owner is very responsive to e-mails. We would stay here again and we would definitely recommend this place for families.
