The property is large and private. In front of the house is a small field - perfect for the kids to run around in. A creek runs along the front of the property and provide a shady area to relax in hammocks (provided) or explore under rocks for salamanders and crayfish.

Behind the house rises a wooded mountain and the national forest. There is over a half mile of hiking trails on the property, with more exploring to be had in the national forest.

There is so much to do in the area for the outdoor enthusiast: Hiking, paddling, fishing, shopping, sightseeing, beer tasting, wine tasting... and of course relaxing!

Great local hikes include the Bartram Trail, Cowee Nature Trail, Rufus Morgan Trail, Kimsey Creek Trail, and numerous access points to the Appalachian Trail.

Paddle down the Little Tennessee River, or go whitewater rafting at the Nantahala Outdoor Center.

Fish for bass, catfish, carp and walleye in the Little Tennessee River, or try your hand at catching trout in one of the many smaller rivers and creeks up in the high country.

There is plenty of good grub at local hangouts like the Sunset Restaurant or Fat Buddies Barbecue. Fine dining can be had at Root + Barrel Kitchen and Cafe Rel.

About Brian Murphey

I live and work in Atlanta with my wife and our two children. I grew up in Florida and went to college there. My wife grew up in Pennsylvania and went to college in Minnesota and North Carolina.

Brian Murphey purchased this house in 2013

Why Brian Murphey chose Franklin

My parents purchased the cottage back in 1980. They brought my brothers and me here nearly every summer. As a boy, I loved exploring the woods, looking for gems in the creek, trying to catch a glimpse of a deer or turkey, and wandering to my heart's content. When my parents decided it was time to sell the cottage in 2013, my wife and I didn't hesitate to buy it: We both love the area, and we wanted to give our boys the same chance to explore nature and wander freely.

What makes this house unique

The property backs up to national forest land, so there is plenty of wildlife to see - if you are quiet and patient! Deer, turkey, fox and grouse move quietly through the woods or down by the creek. Birds fill the woods with song. We are near the Cowee valley - the ancient religous center of the Cherokee nation, and renowned for rubies and sapphires.

Beautiful and clean and well-stocked!

  • 5 of 5

In the description, it says "the perfect basecamp..." and it truly is! We were very pleased with the location with easy access to the necessary (like grocery and brewery and hiking) AND because it is located in such a sweet spot! Hardly any traffic, so it felt safe to let the kids run wild.

The cleanliness of the cabin was the best we have ever experienced (coming from someone who has owned a cleaning business for 14 years, this is BIG), and we were very pleased with how well the house was stocked-- pot, pans, dishes, cookware, utensils, and even extra blankets, towels if needed, laundry soap, etc. It just made it easy to come and not have to buy everything you need in addition to your groceries! Everything was just so well-thought out.

There is a good trail right out the back door that our family enjoyed, and its a good workout too if you like to run! The nearby houses are far enough away to make you feel secluded, but close enough to make you feel safe.

The large deck is great for containing the dog when needed, and we greatly enjoyed sitting out there and watching the view.

Overall and specifically, THIS place is THE place to stay if you want good quality, clean, and to feel at home!

Great cabin in ideal location!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was perfect for our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 young kids)! It had everything we needed for a long weekend and was very comfortable. We had campfires every night and the great supply of firewood was much appreciated. We enjoyed the indoor gas fireplace during the chilly mornings. The kids loved the games and toys in the cabin. The trails behind the house were fun to explore. There was a sweet semi-wild cat that joined us at our campfire each night for scraps, and the kids loved him since we missed our cat at home. We saw a fox one evening and several deer one morning. The cabin was a perfect home base for exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smokey Mountain National Park, and several local gem mines (Rose Creek and Cardinal were both awesome). Check out The Lazy Hiker Brewery in Franklin, and their food truck. Great cabin!

Peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Cowee was just what we hoped it would be - quiet, and beautiful. Everything we needed was on hand. We especially appreciated all the info about local hiking opportunities. We would definitely book here again when returning to the area.

I had an amazing time at the cabin , very peaceful. Brian was very helpful and answered all my questions very quickly. The cabin was equipped with everything you could need, I felt just at home. The beds were comfy and the kids loved the bunk beds. Perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Three kids, two dogs and two slightly crazy adults had a fantastic weekend in the mountains of Franklin. The house was so welcoming. We instantly felt at home and can't wait to go back and explore the area more.
