About Jim Ostrich (owner)

Live in San Diego, always loved coming to visit Big Bear, found this house in Eagle Point (yes there are bald eagles living her) right across the street from the lake, with lake access. Thought this was a cool home for family / friend vacations and am offering it for rent when we are not there!

Jim Ostrich (owner) purchased this house in 2012

Why Jim Ostrich (owner) chose Big Bear

Nearness to the lake, with public lake access for kayak or canoe launching / fishing. Walking distance to Snow Summitt overflow / shuttle parking lot, the Village for shopping or eating, as well as nearby Meadow Park (4th of July Fireworks) swimming and playing with kids. Ideal location!

What makes this house unique

I like the Garden RR train setup myself, but its not available to the renters do the fragile / high price nature of the trains!

Awesome experience!

The cabin was really clean and I have so much fun with my family there. There was enough space for everyone and a lot of activities to keep us entretain. It was snowing so that make the place look really beautiful. Would definitely stay again.

Thank You-Wonderful Time

  • 5 of 5

Hi Jim, many thanks for a great weekend, the jacuzzi was the highlight!!

Here are a few things you should know about:

1. Downstairs bath-

a. Right sink faucet leaking

b. Shower handle plate not attached

2. Downstairs Playroom

a. 1 bedroom lamp not working

3. Upstairs bathroom

a. right sink faucet leaks

4. Many light bulbs out, we replaced a few of them, outside security light needs a special bulb.

We purchased new coffee cups, light bulbs, and trash bags, and left them for future guests.

These little things did not effect our vacation, just thought you would want to know about them.

We hope to be able to rent from you again in the future, you have a beautiful home.

All The Best,

Ross & Audrey deRoche

Wonderful location for family vacation

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for a family vacation with 5 different families. The location was great for everyone to be able to get around and do what they wanted. The house was spacious enough that we were not all on top of each other and the large dinning table allowed us to all sit down together.

The only minor issues we ran into were:

-The lack of kitchen utensils and pots & pans. There were only two pans large enough for us to cook for the whole family and they were both electric, one had clearly been on fire at some point so we made due with just the one. There was not a whisk so instead we used the single beater from a hand mixer (never found the actual hand mixer).

-The window coverings in the kitchen didn't work and some of the bedrooms curtains were see through; not optimal for changing in those rooms.

The bad however was nothing compared to the good and we would gladly return here on a future trip.

Great Location, Good for a Group

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time here - played some pool, enjoyed the spa, had a nice dinner at the great big dining table cooked on the patio BBQ. Very comfortable all around.

Place is pretty much as described. Marked down a bit as it is dated. We expected that from other reviews and set our expectations accordingly. Owner communicated well and no issues if you follow the rules :-).

Wonderful July 4th 2016!

  • 4 of 5

I just got back from my vacation at Jim's house in Big Bear. I had 10 family members including 2 children and had a few day visitors. The house is very spacious and comfortable. Everyone had plenty of space to sleep. Their are 2 living rooms, so you can have separate areas to relax, but I found that my family migrated in a group around the house. Sometimes everyone gathered downstairs to play video games (we brought), pool, coloring (we brought), or just hang out. Other times everyone gathered in the upstairs living room to visit and some spread out to the balcony for some comfortable outdoor sitting. One night, we had a rousing card game with the whole family (well, minus children) at the spacious dining room table. For the fireworks we realized that there are so many trees that you can't see them from the house, but with a 15 minute (with children) walk to the park, we had plenty of room at a picnic table with a wonderful view.

Jim sends you plenty of information about every detail about the house and neighborhood. Be sure to read it all. Even though we read it thoroughly, we almost missed the fact that there is lake access right across the street. We walked the neighborhood admiring the beautiful homes, took lots a pictures, took the kids to the park, and strolled the village (several times), docks, and Boulder Bay park. And the jacuzzi was very nice! All in all, we had a great time! Even though I had sent the pictures from the sight to everyone, they all were amazed at how big and pretty it was. If I were to look for a negative, the only thing that I would say was that some of the things were a little bit worn, but perfectly usable. And even though we had a mishap with the BBQ that required some extra cleaning, Jim had my full deposit refunded the next day. Overall, a great experience. Thank you, JIm!!

Rustic Cabin - Great Location

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is great for the layout of having space with multiple families. Loved that there are bedrooms and a rec room/ tv room downstairs and the living area upstairs. The location is awesome, in a really nice neighborhood, which you can walk right across the street, to the lake.

Plenty of parking with two drive ways with 2 parking spaces.

My only gripe is that it can use some updates. We love to cook and cooked every meal in the kitchen. The kitchen is big and open, but the appliances (aside from fridge), and cutlery, cooking utensils are very dated. Needless to say, bring your own cutlery, utensils, if you love to cook.

The bathrooms were very outdated and no door in the house properly shut. HOT WATER for all, that was a plus!

Love, love, love the table that fit our four families, 16 people sat comfortably.

Another thing that wasn't that great was hearing the security camera run all night in the master bedroom. Getting the email ahead of time letting you know that there would be charges for so many things if you called, or questioned anything or left an item, made you feel like a child with kid gloves on. Hoping the cameras were just on the outside, but we felt a tad bit under the microscope.

All in all the location and layout was a plus. Some updating would make it an awesome place to stay.
