The house is a two and a half story stone Victorian built in 1882 located a few houses from Keuka Lake and a block from the center of the village. The house was built by stone masons brought from Italy to help construct the Pleasant Valley champagne cellars in 1882. During the early years; workers from Curtiss Aircraft building the WW1 Jenny engine roomed there. The plant operated 24/7 and the workers worked 8 on and 8 off. So the beds were rented out for 8 hours at a time. Outside of the house looks pretty much the same as when it was built.
The property is owned by Bob and Millie DeSeyn. Bob is a retired engineer and surveyor and Millie is a retired teacher. Their children are grown with families of their own giving them 7 grandchildren to spoil. After retiring from a local utility Millie and Bob worked in Kuwait for five years, Bob as a defense contractor and Millie as a teacher. Bob is active in the local community serving two years as the village mayor.
Bob DeSeyn purchased this apartment in 1999
Hammondsport has wonderful restaurants, shops, wineries, golfing, the Glenn Curtiss history, horses, and hiking. Add to it this house --- once you have seen it you will no why we chose this as the place to be. Stone houses are special. The quality of the interior is outstanding -- I feel we do not own this house, we are just taking care of it until the next owner gets here!
We first came to Keuka Lake in the late 70's as cottage owners. We enjoyed living on the lake but think the village has all it's benefits plus the life and amenities of a small village. We walk to the post office, grocery store, pharmacy, restaurants, dentist, church, and village square for entertainment. It's a great place to live and a near perfect place to visit.
We were in Hammondsport for my sister's wedding. We found the accommodations larger than what I had expected. The beds were comfortable and the location was ideal. Would definitely stay there again.
DO NOT book this property because the attic is infested with bats.
Over the course of 6 nights, we had 5 bats come into the house. The owner knew about it and put us in a dangerous situation. Bats carry rabies and rabies in humans is fatal. Upon consulting with our Doctor and health department, we were strongly advised to get rabies vaccines. The vaccines are extremely painful, given is multiple doses over 2 weeks, and my children have had to endure these vaccines and it could have been prevented. It will also be extremely expensive, costing us thousands of dollars.
After initially agreeing to pay for the treatment, we started the vaccines and half way through, the owner has decided not to pay for the treatments.
If you are renting this house or considering it, this is not a safe place to stay.
Millie and Bob greeted us upon our arrival and showed us around the 2nd floor. Everything was clean and nice. We had plenty of privacy. We honestly never saw Bob and Millie until we left. They gave us a few suggestions of places to eat - Waterfront was nearby and excellent. Also the suggested of Dr. Frank's winery was greatly appreciated. We had a wonderful stay. My husband is a car guy and didn't enjoy parking is car on the street. And a small reminder and it is my own personal pet peeve - don't forget to clean the microwave! We would stay here again. Bob, Millie and their daughter Susan were so thoughtful, kind and quickly responded to our questions before our arrival. Also was close to the town square. Great restaurants, bars and friendly local folks that showed us a great time.
Excellent second story rental in heart of the Finger Lakes. Keuka Lake is just a short walk away. You can see it from the house. The village square is just a couple blocks away in the other direction, with restaurants and shops. Very nice.
My husband, mother, 14 month old daughter, and I stayed here for a wedding weekend and it was perfect. Spacious apartment and incredibly convenient to the town. The owners are very sweet and accommodating. We would definitely book again if we find ourselves back in Hammondsport.
We would definitely stay again! The owners were friendly and accommodating! Great location, clean, large apartment, and it had everything! There was nice outdoor space also. Only negative was that the bathroom needed some updating.
Award winning wineries, hiking along the Finger Lakes Trail and boating, swimming and fishing in Keuka Lake. Curtiss Museum, Watkins Glenn raceway, Corning Museum of Glass and so many more great places to visit and see.
