This immaculate Spanish Colonial home is centrally located in the sunniest part of Pacific Grove, within walking distance of the Ocean, Cannery Row, Lovers Point, Asilomar, Spanish Bay, Point Pinos Lighthouse, Pebble Beach, and much more. We are near Washington Park and the Monarch butterfly sanctuary.
Our home boasts many green attributes: It has a state-of-the-art solar system installed on the roof which powers all of the home electrical needs. It also has a sophisticated rain-water catchment system which allows us to conserve drinking water by using rainwater for the gardens. South-facing windows capture the sun and we have energy efficient lighting throughout.
We live in a nice quiet neighborhood central to everything on the Peninsula. Two formal bedrooms (one queen and one king bed) plus a Macy's queen size sleep sofa and a roll-away bed in family room which can serve as a 3rd bedroom. Sleeps up to 6 people comfortably. (Please keep in mind the roll-away bed in the Family Room is small and not comfortable for full-sized adults. For kids it's fine). Two complete baths on main level, plus half bath in upstairs master bedroom.
Bright and sunny, our home is immaculate and newly remodeled. It has all the amenities - WiFi, DVD, cable with large sceen TV, dishwasher, washer/dryer, granite counters, hardwood floors. Private courtyard with gas grill. Off-street parking. Large kitchen fully outfitted with granite counters, full-size fridge, large dishwasher, blender, coffee maker, microwave, large oven and glass-top range, flatware and dishes for 8+ persons. We have a large, bright living room with french doors that open to the courtyard. There is a downstairs Family Room and entertainment center with new large flat screen TV.
The main floor consists of the large living room, large kitchen, guest bedroom and two full baths, one of which has a whirlpool bathtub. The other has a shower. Upstairs is master bedroom with king bed and half bath.
If you like natural history, you'll feel right at home here - Jon and Julie are both naturalists and guidebook authors. We have display cases with exotic fossils and minerals which we excavated ourselves on our many adventures. Recreations of native petroglyphs adorn the courtyard which also houses an unusual rock garden.
Casa Mariposa is located right in the middle of the tip of Monterey Peninsula, equidistant from Asilomar Beach and Lovers Point. Walk or bike to the aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf, Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, the Monarch Sanctuary, Pt. Pinos Lighthouse, golf courses, art galleries, etc, etc.
17-mile drive is only 3 blocks away. Follow its legendary route along some of the most scenic shoreline on the coast, winding through Pebble Beach and ending up in Carmel where you have some of the best shopping in California as well as the highest concentration of art galleries and boutiques in the west.
Casa Mariposa is the home of Julie Martinez and Jon Kramer, globe-trotting adventurers with natural history backgrounds and a passion for Earth and all living things. Julie is a natural history illustrator and art instructor. Jon is a geological engineer and solar energy developer. Together they author adventure guidebooks. You will see some of Julie’s art on these walls and their joint adventure guidebooks on the shelves. Many fossils and rocks from their various geologic adventures are displayed throughout the property.
Jon Kramer purchased this house in 2011
In the 1990s Jon lived in Monterey in a small apartment uphill from Cannery Row. Julie would occasionally fly in from Minneapolis to visit him. They fell love with eachother and the area. Together they would spend all their time exploring the incredible natural worlds of Monterey Bay and Big Sur. They dreamed of owning a home here one day and were finally able to pull it off. Now you can experience what has compelled them all these years....
We call our home Casa Mariposa – literally “Butterfly House” in Spanish. It is located only a few blocks from the famous Monarch butterfly sanctuary of Pacific Grove. During the Monarch season (October – March) you will see many of these magnificent delicate creatures take advantage of the butterfly-friendly flowers in and around our home. Each year we raise at least a few dozen from caterpillars on our garden milkweed to adult butterflies. You can walk or bike to all of the best aspects on the Penninsula or retreat to the private courtyard. Casa Mariposa is centrally located in a quiet neighborhood. It sits atop the hill near Washington Park in the sunniest part of Pacific Grove.
We stayed @ Casa Mariposa in July. The house is very nicely appointed and in a great convenient location. The available room was more than adequate for the 3 of us. Everything was well maintained and clean. The rental process was handled smoothly and the owners were very good at responding to communications. We were only in Pacific Grove for a fairly short week long trip, but we stayed quite busy while we were there: driving north on CA1 to San Francisco for a day, spending a day whale watching in the Monterey Bay, driving to Yosemite for a day, visiting relatives in Salinas one day and driving south on CA1 down to Big Sur and Hearst Castle in San Simeon. It was quite nice to have a place in a quiet neighborhood to call home during our travels - and the whirlpool tub sure helped work out the kinks from our road trips. Overall, I would have to say that we loved this place and enjoyed our time here and would be very interested in renting the property again at some point in the future as we look forward to returning to Pacific grove/Monterey.
My family (myself, my wife, daughter, granddaughter and honorary daughter) went to Monterey to celebrate the 4th birthday of our granddaughter. The pictures on the website repesent the house very well but they do not tell the whole story!! We walked in to a kitchen almost as well equipped as my own, with a great selection of condiments to start us off. The location is excellent, very quiet but close enough to the stores for groceries, wine, etc and also to the Aquarium, Cannery Row, restaurants and everything one could want in the area. The decor is eclectic and interesting, the small courtyard was an excellent place to sit and eat (unfortunately, the weather did not co-operate so we could not use it) and the interior space well laid out and all usable. The selection of books, some written by the owners, made for interesting reading the evenings and the collection of geological samples was a unique feature. Overall, I would fully recommend this vila for family vacations for those who have a car and do not mind travelling to get to the various attractions.
The house was lovely, although the bathroom placement was a little strange. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This was our first stay at a VRBO and owner was patient and provided lots of good information. Open common rooms were spacious. Our only complaint is that I was led to believe that there was a washer and dryer and there was not. Would definitely stay there again. Centrally located and could walk to a park even with a toddler.
Our daughter graduated from CSUMB and we needed a place for family aged 8 to 80 to congregate. This is a lovely house, beautifully kept. Thank you!
The location is great and the property is beautiful. The owner was communicative and very clear on all the instructions and information on the home. We had some issues though in that the Clothes Washer didnt work. And given we stayed here at the second part of our trip not being able to wash our clothes was an inconvenience. Also was an issue with the shower in the back bathroom...it was very touchy when it came to temperature where getting hot water meant not moving the handle all the way to the up and left, instead there was a sweet spot that was, once again, a bit touchy and sensitive to get to a comfy setting.
Once again, beautiful place with a great central location, and everything you could ever want, but not being able to wash clothes and dealing with the sensitive back shower temperature was a bit of a bummer.
Side note- we enjoyed the morning visits from the local Bluebirds and the Chubby Squirrel who made their morning rounds. It was also a short, pleasant walk to Pavel's Bakery which had some amazing pastries.
Casa Mariposa has a very central location in the sunniest part of Pacific Grove. Within walking/biking distance to everything on the Peninsula. Monarch butterfly sanctuary only 3 blocks away. 17 mile drive 3 blocks, golf course 5 blocks. Walk to the ocean, the aquarium, Cannery Row, Point Pinos lighthouse, Asilomar beach. Fabulous bike trails and oceanside walking paths. Whale watching, SCUBA diving, world-class golfing, surfing, fishing, sailing and tons more. Minutes from Carmel and Pebble Beach. The best restaurants and finest shopping. Art galleries, musuems, gardens. The list is endless. If you have not been to the Monterey Peninsula you have been missing out on some incredible adventures.
