Cattail Creek is a long-time favorite among vacationers, prized for the magnificent beauty of the creek that runs throughout the mountain. Cattail Creek is located in Yancey County, the highest elevation in North Carolina and enjoys average temperatures in the mid-80s in the summer and lows in the 50s. Our mountain home has three bedrooms and can sleep six comfortably, seven in a trundle bed. All rooms are creekside, and downstairs has floor-to-ceiling windows which offer expansive views of the creek. There are many vistas from which to enjoy the creek including a private overlook, with views of a waterfall. Above the house is a private picnic area with a stone grill, picnic table, and fire ring. Our home is very comfortable and beautifully decorated with indigenous art and furnishings.
I live in Tallahassee, Florida where I work with homeless veterans.
Wendy Hollady purchased this house in 1990
Although the house was built in 1990, it is the site of a former cabin owned by my parents, and grandparent's before them. Every summer beginning in the late 50's, we would spend a memorable summer in Cattail by our beloved mountain creek. My father and both grandfathers were Methodist ministers, and considered this place 'holy ground.' My father named the house 'Shalom', which means peace.
Renters tell me that our house feels more like a home than a rental. I have a large library of books which you are welcome to borrow. The creek is an outdoor playground for kids and you will never tire of the sound of a waterfall lulling you to sleep at night. Above the house is a private picnic area with a stone grill, table, and fire ring. Trout fishing, tubing, campfires, and hiking are all available on the property, but the location is ideally situated for day trips to Mt. Mitchell, Grandfather's Mountain, whitewater rafting, the Biltmore House in Asheville, etc, all under an hour from the house.
We somehow chose the perfect week to be leaf peepers. What a beautiful setting Shalom is perched along Cattail Creek. We cracked the windows and listened to the water while resting comfortable and cozy. Friends joined us and we toured the Blueridge Parkway and shopped in Asheville which is an easy drive. Evenings around the fire pit added to the enjoyment. The house is beautiful, comfortable and welcoming.
My family (2 small boys, wife and mother) greatly enjoyed our stay at Shalom. The home is beautiful, and the backyard with flowing creek and rock formations provided fun and relaxing atmosphere right out of the backdoor. Pleasant 15 minute drive to Burnsville, and close to Linville and Mt. Mitchell areas. Would definitely recommend this home to others.
My husband and I stayed in this gorgeous property from Dec 23, to the 30th of 2015. Although it rained the entire stay it in no way diminished how stunning the views and property are. The home was very large yet warm and cozy with every thing you will need, especially if stuck indoors. I would say we couldn't ever imagine finding a more stunning property, and we have traveled world wide staying in some of the most elaborate rental homes. The pictures online are gorgeous but in person it's even more breathtaking. The owner is wonderful, very helpful and welcoming. Thank you for a special Christmas stay.
We stayed at Shalom for 3 nights. The house was beautifully decorated and had everything we needed. The creek next to the house was amazing, and I caught a (very) small brook trout in one of the pools. We liked the location given that it was about an hour from both Grandfather Mountain (Linville) and Asheville. The logistics of staying there went very smoothly. We definitely would stay there again.
Not only is Shalom a gorgeous mountain home, it is nestled right next to an amazing creek. We slept with the windows open every night, enjoying the sounds of the creek and cool mountain air. The house was clean, beds were very comfortable, and it felt like home. We explored the creek daily, hopping from rock to rock, and taking pictures of its beauty. We took day trips to Mt. Mitchell and Linville Falls for hiking, Asheville for great food and shopping, and even went horseback riding in the mountains. Wendy was great to work with, calling to make sure we arrived safely and had everything we needed for our stay. We will definitely be returning to Shalom!!!
Shalom was even better than we anticipated! The house was very comfortable and the kitchen well-stocked. The best was the view of the mountain and falling to sleep to the rushing creek every night. Our family had such a wonderful visit and Wendy is wonderful to work with. Our kids (3 yrs to 10 yrs) loved the creek. They explored and played in it every chance they got. The location is the perfect, off-the-grid getaway...yet close enough to Burnsville for a quick trip to the supermarket and restaurants. The kids are already asking when we can go back...and hope to in summers to come!
