Caminha Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Historic Manor House, with separate accommodation for couples or small families

A spectacular 18th Century hunting lodge built by an ancestor of the present owner. There's a 1-bedroom apartment in a wing of the house, and another three independent apartments in the Garden House, near the swimming pool. All have their own bathroom facilities, sitting room, basic kitchenette and private patio. Breakfast is included in the price and is taken in the splendour of the main dining room in the Hunting Lodge. There's a lovely secluded 9 m x 4.5 m swimming pool, and wonderful forested gardens with meandering paths and water features. The whole estate is enclosed by a high wall that gives a lot of privacy, despite the fact that Esteiró is only just across from the beach. The furnishings and style are designed to make you feel at home rather than in the pristine, sterile surroundings of a hotel and the facilities will enable you to have a great holiday, by the pool or on the beach or combined with touring around the quaint and historic villages and beautiful landscapes of the Minho region.

Suitability:

Guestbook comments from the manager

We had an excellent trip in Portugal and enjoyed outselves! Caminha was a little slow :) but there were wonderful things to see around and about. We especially enjoyed the atmosphere at breakfast where José always shared his stories with us and gave us help and information as we needed it. We loved Portugal and will recommend you to our friends.

Casa de Esteiró had it all

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had a fantastic week staying at the Jacaranda apartment in the old hunting lodge at Casa de Esteiró. This place had all we could ask for - from the brilliant host José and his welcoming and friendly staff, great breakfast in the main house and a pool that we most of the time had to ourselves, to a perfect spot from which to explore the area with all its amazing scenery, nice restaurants/townships and beautiful mountains/beaches. It actually feels a bit counterproductive to reveal this here since we wouldn't mind having this paradise to ourselves in the future...;).

A splendid garden lodge for a relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

We visited in mid-April when weather was still cool. From the moment we arrived we were embraced by the lush, decades-, if not centuries-old garden, especially the impressive, old Eucalyptus tress and their fragrance. The grounds breathed peace, quiet and beauty and we were thrilled by it. The reception by Jose, the owner. an eloquent and most cultured man and his staff was very welcoming with attention to detail and interest in our needs and expectations for our 6-day stay. The apartment where we stayed was optimal, secluded, private, with an inviting rooftop terrace where enjoyed quiet moments and late afternoon drinks. The location is terrific also, since it is a 10 min. walk from the nearest, white sand beach and 30 min. walk from the center of the beautiful small town of Caminha. So, whether one has a car or not (we did for part of the time), things will go well anyway.

During our stay, the staff's attention was ever-present, caring and helpful and the brief conversations we had with Jose, most enjoyable.

Net, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Esteiro, found minimal if anything negative worth remarking upon and would positively return, were we to find ourselves in the neighborhood again. We highly recommend it.

This is a very special and wonderful house

  • 5 of 5

The house and surroundings are very special and it is a wonderful place for vacation and to relax. The whole family - parents and 2 children aged 7 and 10 years enjoyed the peace and quiet - and especially the pool :-) There were about. 35 degrees all 4 days we stayed at the casa de esterio. We were very impressed with the dining room where we enjoyed our breakfast in the extravagant surroundings. The owner Jose is very friendly and he is always ready to answer our questions. Both Jose and his staff are very friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

Wonderful holiday in Casa de Esteiró

  • 5 of 5

We spend a wonderful 10 days in one of the 2 bedroom apartments at the Refugio at Casa de Esteiró, in October 2011. Our hosts made us feel very welcome and getting to know José and his household was the best part of the holiday. Every morning we enjoyed our breakfast in the beautiful dining room of the lodge. Over breakfast we chatted with José and discussed our plans for the day to which he always had the most wonderful suggestions about places to visit in the surrounding area. He also told us stories from his life and his extensive travels which we really enjoyed. The apartment is tastefully decorated, immaculately clean and warm, and every consideration is made to ensure the stay is comfortable for guests. The bedrooms are very comfortable with fine views of the garden, the living spaces cosy and well appointed with fireplace, seating and amenities. You can sit outside in the garden or by the pool and enjoy the sunshine or take a short stroll down to the river and the beach which is breathtaking. It is a short walk to the town centre where you will find numerous restaurants and café bars, and anything else you might need such as banks, the post office and the tourist office. Our favourite restaurant was an 800 meter walk from the house on the board walk beside the river just next to the beach. From Cominha its possible to explore this unspoilt region of Northern Portugal with its beautiful historic fortified towns, dipping in and out of Galicia,Spain and visit the wonderful National Park of Penedes Geres.

Owner's Response: It's perhaps worth pointing out that these visitors stayed for almost two weeks in the second half of October, and the weather and facilities were clearly good enough for them to enjoy an excellent "off-season" holiday. In fact, the weather reached 30º on several of those days, which is only a little unusual - October is often a great month for enjoying northern Portugal, at very reasonable prices and without crowds of tourists. José and his wife, the owners, really do go out of their way to ensure their visitors have the best holiday possible, and will always help them find the best spots to relax in, the most interesting places to visit and explore, those hidden gems that are so hard to discover. We're delighted these particular visitors enjoyed their accommodation so much - they are holiday villa owners themselves, so they know what they're talking about!

Very enjoyable holiday

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks in the grounds of this beautiful property. Our accommodation was excellent - just as described on website - we had a 2 bed apartment - very clean, well-maintained, excellent staff, very comfortable for a family of 2 very young children (ages 2 and 1). It was quiet at night and spacious with a lovely outdoor terrace overlooking pool. Kids loved dogs, cats, fish, hens to be seen on property. Pool very near, beach and town only a walk away. Loads of towns and villages to explore - took boat to Galicia some days - good food to be had.

Owners very friendly also and provided good information for sightseeing and eating out.

Packed with history, with an active nightlife and truly spectacular views of river, ocean and mountains, Caminha is the gem of the Alto Minho region. The town sits on the River Minho, which marks the border with Spain, and it's just a short ferry crossing into Galicia to explore the very different coastline. The beautiful central 'praça' is only 1 km away, and the beaches are even closer. There are many fantastic restaurants, and all the amenities you need for your holiday. Caminha is also served by rail from Porto and Vigo (in Spain) and is close to motorways making access to many more historic cities quick and easy (like Porto, Braga, Guimarães and Valença), as well as the wild rugged hills just a few kilometers inland and Portugal's only National Park, just 50 km away. With Porto, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo airports within easy reach, this is also a great spot for a short off-season break. Esteiró is hidden away in heavily wooded gardens between town and beach.
