About Scott Congleton

My wife and I purchased this property in 1982 as we wanted something different and we wanted a challenge. The property was originally the R. W. Lacefield Lumber Company and was started in 1902. We have been working for the past 30 years to make the old warehouse behind the Carriage House our home. I hope to live long enough to see it completed as I am doing most of the work myself. We are the caretakers of the property and we are here to insure your stay is all you expected and more. We want you to tell your friends about Midway and we want you to come back as often as possible.

Scott Congleton purchased this house in 1982

Why Scott Congleton chose Kentucky

The Carriage House was started in1902 and was the office/retail space for the lumber company. 30 feet behind the Carriage House is the old warehouse that my wife and I have been working on for over 30 years to make it into our home. Two buildings behind the warehouse had fallen in due to neglect and were hauled to the dump. There is a 1400 sq foot shed on the back of the property.

Midway is unique in that it does not have any franchise businesses at all. No Fast Food restaurants. You are just minutes from downtown Versailles, Frankfort, Georgetown, and Lexington KY. Midway is just off Interstate 64 which gives you fast access to Louisville and Cincinatti as well.

What makes this house unique

The Carriage House, built in 1902, is on the Kentucky Historical Buildings Charter. It is approximately 1100 square feet and has undergone a full restoration over the past three years. Shy of tearing the building down and coming up from the foundation it is all new. It has been completely re-wired with an up to date electrical service. It has a new HVAC System with humidity control as well as electrostatic filtration. The kitchen is completely new as is all the plumbing throughout the structure. There is a nice deck off the back of the house overlooking the vaccant lot nextdoor and shaded by an old River Birch and a Pine Tree. It is comfortable in the evenings even in the summer.

Midway is a small town more than a city as everything is in walking distance no matter where you are in the town. Railroad St, the main street of Midway, is full of nice restaurants, antique shops, leather and clothing stores. The town is in the heart of the Thoroughbred Farms in central KY. It is an ideal area for cycling as there are a number of competition events annually that start and finish in Midway. Midway is also on the KY Bourbon Trail and several of the great distilleries are just minutes from Midway and the tours are worth taking.

If you are a smoker then you will probably not like the Carriage House as it is a Totally Smoke Free Facility. No smoking of any substance will take place in or around the Carriage House. Having retired as a volunteer Fireman for Woodford County I have a fear and great respect for fire. Candles and cigarettes have caused more than one home in Midway to burn down. I don't want this to happen to my Carriage House. That and the fact that I don't want anyone to be bothered by the odor of old smoke and the reactions some people have to this. I have taken great measures to insure that the air in the Carriage House is as clean as possible. I have a commercial ORECK Filter running 24/7 to clean the air.

Simply Awesome!

We stayed at this lovely place for 6 days while attending the Kentucky Derby. The place was immaculate! The owner Scott was more than gracious and recommended places to visit while on our trip. The Historical Midway town was a sight to be seen. We didn't want to leave....if we ever visit Kentucky again I hope to stay at the Carriage House. I wish there were more stars to give this place!

Escape to Blue Grass, Bourbon, Horse Culture

  • 5 of 5

Location – Location – Location

What an amazing and perfect 55th Wedding Anniversary!! A couple of 78yo’s that wanted a memorable 55th and we more than found it at The Carriage House and Midway. At our ages, we are beyond the normal tourist locations and instead look for places into which we can immerse ourselves and attempt to find the culture and character of where we are visiting.

VRBO has helped us do that for many years and this was NO exception. The Carriage House – Very clean, very well equipped, ramp access at the back for ease of entrance/egress, beautifully decorated - Transported us into the wonderful “horse country” of Kentucky. Combined with the wonderful owners, we made an early and easy transition into the unique environment of Midway.

Bourbon!! The heart of the Bourbon Trail gave us the opportunity to savor the wonderful libation of the region. Fun tours and amazing “tastings” – all within a 30 minute drive of The Carriage House. And the best part – very scenic and easy driving. (if you did not “taste” too much.}

Blue Grass Horse Country – Unique in all the world and so easy to slip into. Amazing manicured pastures and paddocks. Keenland Race Track, Kentucky Horse Farm and the wonderful “Old Friends” farm for horses that were too old to race or stud. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful

Dining!! Gracious Southern Dining and gastronomic delights. “Hot Brown” – a must if you have never had it. Holly Hill Inn Brunch – you will wish every day was a weekend day.

Enough – Perfect Location, The Carriage House, Midway, hosts. Do yourselves a favor and escape to a different world.

A Big Hit

  • 5 of 5

We hit a big trifecta before going to Keeneland. First, the Carriage House, a gem by any standards--roomy (great for 2 couples), well-furnished and spotless. Second, Midway--the Carriage House introduced us to this delightful little town, easily within walking distance. Third, Scott--a friendly and most accommodating host who was very easy to work with and a pleasure to meet. We plan to make return trips and hope we are lucky enough to find the calendar open so that we can stay here again.

My daughter got married near Lexington, and I needed a place convenient to the venue, and to Lexington, and I had to have something for longer than a weekend. Wow, did I ever choose right. Seriously I am so glad I found this place, and the owner was warm, friendly - southern hospitality at it's finest. The accomadations are impeccable, down to the minutest detail. I recommend the Carriage House to anyone wanting an extremely upscale relaxing place to stay. We plan on renting it again, and again, and again.

Perfect location for a girls' getaway

  • 5 of 5

Five college friends and I stayed at The Midway Carriage House for a weekend in order to get away and reunite. This rental was the perfect location for this. The house was very clean and comfortable, and the owner went to great lengths to ensure that we had everything we needed. The kitchen was fully stocked and there were plenty of clean linens and bedding. We were able to walk to several different restaurants and shops, and the nearby bakery was delicious. I would definitely stay again, and I would recommend the rental to others.

Great stay in an charming town

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the carriage house with another couple for a weekend to tour some distilleries. The house was nicely appointed with everything to make our stay comfortable, including a wonderfully shaded deck. The carriage house is located a short walk from several great restaurants and shops. Overall, the town of Midway is charming with lots of well maintained historic structures. Scott was and eager to make our stay as comfortable as possible - and succeeded.
