We are located at the north end of Playa Grande, the second to the last house on the beach. We have a beautiful, landscaped private yard with a shell shaped “cool” pool. YLang Ylang, mango, guanabana, almond, teak and guava trees are all around you. The house is located on the beautiful Las Baulas National Park where the world’s largest leatherback turtles nest. We keep lights low at night on the beach side so the nesting mothers and emerging babies are not confused.

The house is two story, 32 feet high with large decks around three sides. The Honeymoon Suite is the top floor. It consists of large master bedroom, 19 foot ceilings, double fans, large air conditioner and cable tv. from the masterbedroom you can see everything. Bathroom has a tiled shower with hot water. The well equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, 4 burner stove/oven coffee maker, blender and toaster oven. A built-in “U” shaped conversational couch in the living room has 6 inch cushions all around for your comfort. An upstairs sleeping loft has a queen bed and a double bed. You have beautiful views of the beach, surf, pelicans and sunsets from the living room, bedroom and kitchen.

The upstairs beachside deck is 12 feet wide by 56 feet long- plenty of room for sitting, eating, relaxing, watching surf and sunsets. The deck on the pool side upstairs is 10 feet x 56 feet (we saved a big tree over the pool.

Downstairs are two large bedrooms, equipped with double fans, AC, dead-bolted walk-in closet, 10 foot ceilings, small kitchen with small refrigerator, double burners, coffee maker and toaster oven. The private baths have tiled showers with hot water. both bedrooms has a king size bed and a single bed. area. From the king size bed you look out one set of double French doors to the beach and surf and the other set leads you to the garden and the pool. The colorful hibiscus and other plants all around the courtyard draw butterflies and hummingbirds.

The Villa can accommodate up to 8 people with the upstairs and downstairs rooms. Prices vary according to the season. Please call to talk to Alan or Kathy. We prefer the personal contact so we can best meet your needs. we live on site 24/7 365

About kathy &alan

Villa of the rock Kathy & I bought our piece of Paradise in 1994, we started building in march of 1996. we lived in a tent for 16 months, the time it took to build our dream home on the beach. living in a tent taught us that less is more. we lived in Sunset Beach Hawaii prior to moving to Costa Rica. we have been helping folks for many years to have a safe & wonderful vacation. we live on site 24/7 365, to make sure that all your needs are taken care of properly.

kathy &alan purchased this house in 1994

Why kathy &alan chose Playa Grande

we chose Playa Grande for its all year natural beauty, world class surf, no major taxes & most of all the PEOPLE of Costa Rica

What makes this house unique

you will enjoy privacy surrounded by very large flowering trees & bushes with genle fresh air breezes, beautifull golden sand beach 5 seconds from beachside gates, world class surf, unreal sunsets & great food.

My wife and I were joined by another couple and stayed in the downstairs rooms. We had the times our our lives. The house is perfect for couples, families, surfers...whatever you want. We literally surfed everyday right out in from of the house. We're already looking to book another trip to Villa De La Roca. Alan and Kathy were great. I highly recommend this location!

A Fabulous Week on Playa Grande

  • 5 of 5

My wife and i stayed for (only!!!) one week at Villa de la Roca on Playa Grande with two other couples. I don't normally write reviews especially if i think a place is great - since i prefer to keep great places to myself. However, here are a few thoughts from our stay - and all people in our party echo the same sentiments :

1. The pictures and video on the VRBO site do NOT do this Villa justice. It is a simply wonderful and relaxing place. And it is right on the beach. One major decision required every night is - do we watch the sunset from the second floor patio or, do we take the 20 steps onto the beach .

2. The location is fantastic from a variety of perspectives. A. the closest real town is Tamarindo which is 3 miles walk down the beach - a very approachable walk which we did. However, that also means that the area on the beach around the house is quiet and the beach area is very peaceful - some people, especially surfers, but not lots of people. B. Food and drink is no more than 5 minutes away - either at the Taco shack along the beach (which has not only great tacos but great smoothies, banana bread and brownies) - or at the few places near and in the Rip Jack In which is about 100 metres further away than the Taco Shack..

3. Alan and Kathy were great to us.. called the Fish Guy aka Frank to come by whenever we wanted fresh seafood - which was phenomenal - tuna, mahi mahi, rock lobster, red snapper - among others we tasted.

To wrap it up, we were there for only a week which was delightful - filled with great walks on the beach, swimming in the ocean outside the door, hospitable hosts - only regret - we couldnt stay longer !

Thanks Alan and Kathy - we will see you again

Amazing View

  • 4 of 5

Our family stayed in the house for over a week and spent the vast majority of our time on the amazing second floor deck which gave us an incredible view of the beach and ocean. Alan and Kathy were very hospitable and helpful in their recommendations for places to eat in the area. They had made arrangements with some friends of theirs to come and give our kids surfing lessons and give us information about different tour options in the area. We had a fabulous time playing in the waves and on the beach which was just a step out of our house, and spent a lot time just relaxing and enjoying the ocean breeze. Be sure to ask about the bakery truck that comes twice a week, as well as the fish truck that brought us fresh jumbo shrimp with many other options! There is also a really terrific taco stand just down the beach about a 5 minute walk from the house. We were able to just walk down the road behind our house and see howler monkeys, and had a wonderful excursion out to the Black Sand Beach. We enjoyed some delicious food at Kikes as well as the two Italian restaurants which are just minutes away. Also there are a few grocery stores very near by to pick up anything you need. There is a shower in the back of the house beside the pool to rinse off the sand before jumping into the refreshing pool. It's not a five star establishment, but the quiet beach and friendly atmosphere were fantastic. There is no inside stairs joining the 2 rooms downstairs with the main level; we split our family to use all the rooms in the house, which meant our children were downstairs with no way of reaching us during the night as we locked the gate and the doors (which was the safe and logical thing to do), but we knew this going into our vacation and made it work. Thank you so much Alan and Kathy for your friendly hospitality. We hope to visit your wonderful beach again!

Family Vacation

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 10 rented the entire house and had a fabulous time! Alan & Kathy were extremely helpful in helping us book tours and suggest restaurants. The semi private beach which was only steps away was spectacular. The upstairs view was our favorite. The pool was refreshing and always clean. I would definitely recommend this home for someone looking to enjoy the beach without a crowd. We enjoyed everything about Costa Rica and our stay at the Villa De La Roca!

Deep Vibrations

  • 5 of 5

A friend once told me that people from Hawaii are cool because of the harmonic vibrations of the islands. Apparently they are deeper there. This theory could well explain Alan and Kathy who are deep and cool and fun and totally welcoming. Villa de la Roca was a spring break destination for our posse' composed of two families. We rented the whole house for the get-away of a life time. Everyone relished in the local scene...surfing, tacos on the beach, sunsets and tidal pools. We rented cars and took day trips. Snorkeling at Black Sand Beach (Phenomenal!). Zip lining with howler monkeys (seriously!). Lunch and shopping at Tamarindo (not totally cheap but reasonable with a state side frame of mind). If you are considering this spot let me encourage you. Book it. Now. It's one of those places where the vibe is just that good!
