Overview

Amsterdam Oud-West House Boat Rental Photos and Description

Have a unique experience of Amsterdam on ‘the perfect houseboat’, situated on a picturesque canal among the real local Amsterdammers of Oud-West. As fellow boat-locals in Oud-West, without a doubt one of the most authentic and original parts of the city, we are proud to say that this area does not have any tourist traps and you can truly experience great variety, food and shops among the locals.

And yet must-sees such as the Dam Square, Vondelpark, Anne Frank House, Westerkerk and the Leidse Square are located at walking distance!

Meander to the oldest part of the city called the Jordaan to enjoy the boutique shopping and fantastic food, or walk to the theatre district and enjoy the great nightlife around the Leidse Square.

The boat, designed by the Rotterdam based architects of SPRIKK, offers a distinctive combination of retro vintage elements such as a curved ceiling and wooden walls with modern luxury. This was quite a challenge, but we succeeded. Therefore you can watch the flatscreen tv (70 channels+) from a genuine chair of Gerrit Rietveld, one of the most famous Dutch furniture designers, and have a dinner at the vintage table of Holland’s design master Louis van Teeffelen whilst listening to your own music plugged in at the docking station.

The exceptional bathroom is close to a spa. The bath, half sunk in the floor, and rain shower give view on the porthole which looks out over the canal- one of the preserved details of this nearly 60-year old houseboat. Not only the Italian tiles and design taps, but also the sheer size of the bathroom contributes to the ultimate bathing experience.

The Arden sleeps 6 people. It has two separate bedrooms with high standard quality beds that can be used either as a twin or a double bed. Using the indoor curtains and comfortable sofa bed, a third private bedroom can be created. All rooms have water view and are provided with WiFi and cable connection for the best internet reception possible.

The kitchen is designed for your convenience. The stylish white, minimal design covers a complete range of all the necessary utilities: induction cooker, dishwasher, fridge, microwave, oven and a washing machine with dryer.

The drawers are fully stocked with all you can think of in order to make a complete diner for your family or friends.

We have made sure even that the most experienced chef cook will feel at home. And if you don’t feel like cooking, rest assured, you are surrounded by some of the best restaurants in town.

To the best of our knowledge and ability, we simply did everything, and continue to do so, to make you feel at home in our gorgeous part of Amsterdam!

About Juul Steyn

“My girlfriend Iris and I (Juul) have lived on a houseboat ourselves for quite a few years now and we feel lucky everyday to be able to live so freely and privately on the historic waters of Amsterdam. Therefore we wanted to share this experience with other people. The ideal opportunity presented itself to us early 2012 and we were able to build from scratch ‘the perfect houseboat’. The result is even better than we ever could have hoped for.”

Juul Steyn purchased this house boat in 2012

Why Juul Steyn chose Amsterdam

“The architect made a uncompromising design and with the help of a great contractor we managed to build our dream: the 'Arden'. The concept of the design is based on Shakespeares novel 'As You Like It' where two girls escape from the city into the forest called Arden where they find peace and love. We hope our houseboat will have the same effect on you and that you will like it as much as we do!”

What makes this house boat unique

“Is it the warm red pine boards on the outside, the retro architecture on the inside? Is it the bath, rain shower the top of the notch Italian tiling and the cute porthole in the bathroom? Maybe it is the vintage Dutch Design furniture, the quality beds, or the flatscreen tv, docking station and fully equipped modern kitchen?

We personally think it is the love that we have put in every detail of this houseboat. A houseboat that is designed to give you the best Amsterdam experience possible. Be welcome!”

Our floating apartment

  • 5 of 5

Well, what a surprise we had when we opened the door to this accomodation. We felt instantly at home! Big sliding windows allow you to realise that you're on the river, ducks, geese and swans paddle near. Neighbours are friendly and shout a welcome to us from this little floating community.

A shock at how big the bathroom is, tiled in blue, with a skylight for great light, and a separate toilet. The two bedrooms are adequate, and pleasant. We had six of us stay, the lounge sofa folding out to a queen size bed, with a very good block out curtain tracked from the ceiling. The neighbourhood is very quiet at night and we felt very safe here. No problem walking into the city, 25-30 minutes to Central Station, the same to the Rijksmuseum. Two supermarkets are only a minute walk which was very convenient, and with a substantial kitchen in the houseboat, we cooked each night after a tiring day of sightseeing. Restaurants are also close by. We highly recommend this accomodation, good for six, but better for four. Loved our stay here, and will hopefully get the opportunity to come back again.

Awesome houseboat and great location!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Houseboat Arden. It is a very beautiful boat in a great location. There are cafes and stores close by and the neighborhood is very quiet. It is walking distance to the Museum district. Juul and Iris were excellent hosts and they helped make our stay perfect! Two thumbs up!

Could do with some TLC

  • 4 of 5

Had a lovely week on the house boat. Good location, nice quiet canal and close to Amsterdam's great tram system. Juul is a warm and friendly host. He met us on our arrival at the nearby tram stop and escorted us to the boat. The house boat itself has a good range of amenities with nicely fitted kitchen and bathroom and lots of nice clean towels, however, the only things that let it down were the approach to the boat could do with some tidying [ dead plants and weeds ]. The spare bed linen and quilts were in need of replacement. If you needed to use an oven there was only a microwave/grill combination which was inadequate. It doubled up as a toaster which took a long time to toast bread. A small toaster would have been a great improvement as there were 5 of us to cater for. With a few updates I would have no hesitation in recommending this particular houseboat and would not hesitate to use it again ourselves.

Excellent house boat.

  • 5 of 5

The house boat had all the features of an extremely comfortable stay. It was in a quiet location, but only a short (15 min) to the centre of Amsterdam and the museum district. There was 5 of us a couple and 3 teenagers, there was plenty of room for all of us. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was great. We didn't cook much, so didn't use many of the cooking facilities, but the boat seemed very well equipped. A particular highlight was seeing the baby moorhens that swam right up to the houseboat window.

I would definitely recommend the houseboat.

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, son and my husband's grandmother and myself stayed in the houseboat. It had everything we needed and was close to trams. The location was quiet and very enjoyable. The houseboat had everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable.

Thanks Juul!

Perfect Houseboat in Amsterdam

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 (!!) including two grandmothers over 80, a 20 year old, and a 9 year old had a wonderful 3 nights in this houseboat near the downtown. We were within walking distance of everything we wanted to see, and got the tram once to get the grannies to a windmill bus tour. Supermarkets are very close by and well stocked - and home cooking really made sense with so many people (restaurants really too expensive, though still fun!). Thank you, and hope to come back some day!
