About Sue McGrath
Hi my name is Sue MCgrath and I have been managing Blo Norton Hall since my boss Mr Lorimer purchased in 2009 where he refurbished and brought it to life. With such a beautiful property my job is very easy, we love to rent it out so you and your families can enjoy the house for the many different events you would like to hold with a large group of people. Its great for Anniversary celebrations, catching up with old friends, Wedding receptions as you can put a marque up in the garden, families with children of all ages as they love hunting around in the gardens playing hide n seek and finding the secret play area in the woods. My staff and I also love to stay here as well as work here, its a very special place.
Sue McGrath purchased this Barn in 2009
Why Sue McGrath chose Bury St Edmunds
Blo Norton Hall is not modern, does not have great Wi-FI, you cant get a phone signal, the furniture is antique and the floors uneven but what it lacks in Hotel sophistication it makes up for with character and it has bundles of it! I love it for its quirkiness and when children arrive their faces light up, for they see how great hide and seek is going to be. Its very special to me and I am sure it will become to you, some of our guests have been returning year after year, it grows on you.
What makes this Barn unique
The house is a coming together and a celebration of family events, you find yourselves talking because we do not have Hi tech equipment or X boxes, the phones don't work very well so you find communication becomes key, even the kids join in! We are not one of these places who hike up all the bank holiday rates, we have 3 rates and pass the discounts on to everyone, so you pay a low rate Jan - July, that's right no increase for Easter or May bank holidays, there's a summer rate and of course Christmas and New year. We believe that everyone should benefit especially those with young children. We hope you enjoy as much as I and my staff enjoy working and maintaining it.

Beautiful and spacious converted barn in lovely surroundings
We used this as an opportunity for our dispersed family to meet up and enjoy some time together. The barn was lovely, well equipped, and easily spacious enough for 8 people. We would thoroughly recommend it.
Fantastic Virginia Barn
So much room to spread ourselves about [6 adults and 2 children]. Peaceful and relaxing.
Everything we needed.
If we were going that way again, we'd use Virginia Barn
One more thing- when my son rang the emergency number, because we'd used too much hot water, it was sorted out straight away and very friendly.
ps Just one small niggle, it would've been useful to know that the internet is intermittent!
Thank you Deborah for your review, so pleased you enjoyed yourself. Sorry to hear you had trouble with the internet we shall look into, unfortunately we can only get Satellite internet out there, its the price we pay for rural living.
Great amazing amount of space ideal for families
Great accommodation . Friendly village , Wonderful family retreat .
Fabulous setting for house party with friends
Our group of 7 family friends (age 2-45) just spent a brilliant long weekend at the Blo Norton property (renting the hall AND two barns). The hall is grand, charming, quirky and comfortable with numerous large spaces for groups to congregate. The barns are fabulously converted with modern kitchens and cozy interiors. Suggest you can plan on four families sleeping in the hall, two in the largest barn and 1 in the small barn.
Sue McGrath (property manager) and Karen (the housekeeper) patiently answered all of my questions prior to arrival. Check in was easy and we conveniently arranged a Sainsbury's delivery to arrive shortly after we did.
Our group spent Saturday morning exploring the extensive grounds. These included open lawns at the barns (not apparent on outdated google map satellite images), the wooded drive and landscaped gardens at the hall and a meadow behind the hall. Some of us ran a local park run or visited Wyken Vineyards' farmer's market and gardens (highly recommended) where we collected eggs, fresh asparagus, breads and artisanal treats for the weekend. We walked to the White Horse in Thelnetham for lunch, which handled our large group expertly and served outstanding food. Our dinners were catered by Emma Biggs Catering (highly recommended). The kids sat down first to a family style/large dish dinner while the adults enjoyed canapes and a glass of champagne by the fire followed by a three-course meal. Superb!
Sunday, after a fry up in the well-equipped hall kitchen, we hosted Grey Goose archery (highly recommended) who set up targets for the children, and the parents enjoyed a quick go as well. We used the hall's two gas grills for a Sunday BBQ at the large,18-person table by the property's pond. Lawn games and walks on the grounds and around the village kept us entertained until Emma arrived again with another perfect dinner.
We were truly spoiled at Blo Norton and the kids are already begging to go back. Memories for a lifetime.
Excellent for a weekend getaway
Really pleased with the barns. We had a lovely stay.
A relaxing weekend in a beautiful property
I spent a long weekend in Virginia Barn and Duleep Singh Barn with a large group of friends and we all had a fabulous time. The property was perfectly clean and had everything we needed. In the run up to the weekend there were several things I wanted to check and all my questions were answered very quickly. We went for a great walk around the nearby Lopham Fen.
The Village itself is surrounded by quiet lanes, ideal for walking, cycling and painting and is close to Redgrave and Lopham Fen. Blo Norton Hall is the perfect choice for a relaxed stay in the East Anglian Countryside. Blo Norton is situated close to the picturesque Norfolk and Suffolk Borders making it ideal to explore all that both counties have to offer. Blo Norton lies on the River Little Ouse which separates Suffolk from Norfolk. The Hall reputedly provided the setting for Virginia Wolf’s short story The Journal of Miss Joan Martyn. In the story the main character, Rosamund Merridew, is a historian researching England's land-tenure system Attractions and Places of interest close by: Redgrave & Lopham Fen National Nature Reserve, Boundary Farm Riding Stables, Knettishall Heath Country Park, Bressingham Gardens, Banham Zoo, Wyken Hall Vineyards.
