ELK RIVER FARM, Ruffed Grouse Lodge’s adjoining sister property, now has a newly built, beautifully appointed, one bedroom cottage. A Wolf Gas Range, Subzero Refrigerator and In-drawer microwave complete a custom crafted kitchen. A tile shower and granite countertops make our new cottage the top of the spectrum of properties in the area. ERF is designed for a couple looking for a secluded hideaway. Sorry, we do not allow children or pets at the Cottage.
The COTTAGE AT ELK RIVER FARM overlooks the Elk River and has very private access to a 2-mile secluded stretch of the river. There is a private boat launch for our guests who want to fish the Elk River for Muskie, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Bluegills and Crappies. Canoes and kayaks are handy for a peaceful trip along a beautiful stretch of the river where wildlife is abundant.
ELK RIVER FARM HAS A UNIQUE FEATURE NOT FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE NORTHWOODS!
The owners transformed a 19th century barn foundation to create a 'Karesansui,' or Japanese 'dry landscape garden.' The garden holds a carefully composed arrangement of indigenous rocks, water features, moss, pruned trees and shrubs. Small stones are raked to represent ripples in water. The 'Karesansui' is meant to be observed from a vantage point outside the garden. It is intended to reflect the intimate essence of nature, and to aid relaxation and the contemplation of life. The owners are students of Sukiya lifestyles and are delighted to share this special feature of Elk River Farm with interested guests.
Ruffed Grouse Lodge and Elk River Farm are connected through forested walking trails. Both locations have fire pits with free firewood and picnic areas, which are perfect for family gatherings.
Alumacraft fishing boats, canoes and kayaks are included at both Ruffed Grouse Lodge and Elk River Farm. A Yamaha 8hp outboard motor, and a MinnKota trolling motor are available for daily or weekly rental. For guests bringing their own boats, there is a public landing serving Wilson Lake one mile from the Lodge. There is also a private boat launch for access to the Elk River.
RGL is pet friendly. There is a free, sheltered, heated dog kennel. There is a $20 daily charge for crated dogs staying with their owners in the Lodge
Linda & I are retired Television Entertainment Industry Executives. We are outdoor enthusiasts and have been hosting families, corporate executives, grouse hunters, fishermen and winter sportsmen at Ruffed Grouse Lodge for over 10 years.
John & Linda Reardon purchased this lodge in 1999
Linda grew up in nearby Park Falls and family members are nearby. Her brother Terry Ides has lived here his whole life and knows the Northwoods intimately. Terry owns and leads Ides Guides, the best grouse guide service in Price County, the Ruffed Grouse Capital of the World. We have been hunting grouse with Terry for over 35 years.
One of the first resorts on Wilson Lake was situated on this choice property. The grounds are gently sloping with stairless access to the lake. The history of the area is fascinating and our bay is quiet, quiet, quiet except during the fishing opener and the 4th of July when excited fishermen and families celebrate summer.
RGL was a wonderful experience. My family and I were very impressed at the wonderful accommodations, there was even fresh baked cookies waiting for us when we arrived. RGL was sparkling clean and had everything you could possibly need at hand. John and Linda were wonderful hosts and very friendly. We had a very relaxing trip and spent a great deal of time on the water. My 6 year daughter found great joy in going with Linda to visit the hen house and pick out eggs for breakfast each morning. We were certainly sad to see our visit to RGL come to an end, but we will absolutely be returning.

This marks our second visit to the RGL. We visited here last year and had a fantastic time. Several months before our visit this year I had a family conference at the dinner table and asked my 3 kids whether they wanted to vacation in Colorado or Florida. They insisted on going back to Wisconsin, so we did. Our trip was as good or better than last year. I'll say this, I have a very stressful job (99% of us could say this) but staying at the RGL again for the week was (1) relaxing and calming, (2) rewarding in seeing the joy in my childrens' faces, because they truly were happy and having fun and (3) spending time with family where we weren't watching tv or playing video games. Every time the loon called children and adults were excited.. I highly recommend this place and the hosts could not be more friendly, gracious and hospitable.
My son and I went up north for two days of hunting in December. Ruffed Grouse Lodge was amazing. I have stayed at a lot of lodges for fishing and hunting. RGL was one of the finest. John and Linda were gracious hosts and gave me good information on hunting locations. I would highly recommend RGL for the accommodations and its location in prime hunting and fishing land. Although it was winter I can see that it would also be a great place for a family vacation up north. The lake was terrific and the river front property looked great.
My husband, 4-year-old son, and I stayed in Timberdoodle for 3 nights, and we could not have been more happy with the cottage, the property, the owners, or the experience! Our son was ecstatic about our daily adventures at RGL: hiking through the woods to visit the chickens and gardens, taking canoe rides, swimming in the lake, roasting smores by the fire, etc. My husband and I meanwhile found great peace and relaxation while on the property, and we enjoyed quiet evenings sitting on the dock listening to the loons and watching the moon rise over the lake. The attention to detail here is superb, the property is gorgeous and well-loved. It was a truly perfect vacation for our entire family.
My wife and I stayed here over the 4th of July weekend and had a fantastic time. John and Linda are extremely accommodating and will make your trip to Phillips memorable. We spent the day fishing and kayaking and enjoying the outdoor paradise John and Linda have created. If you are looking for an outdoor getaway to accommodate couples or groups look no further. Fantastic time and we look forward to our return trip!
Go to Ruffed Grouse Lodge . . . get to know John and Linda. Your life will be better for it.
The property has stand-alone options, suitable for singles, couples or large groups and extended families. Choose what's right. Some are on the Wilson Flowage property, one on the Elk River. Each is distinctive. (The VRBO listing provides all the detail you need.)
All the properties are lovingly and carefully managed personally by John and Linda . . . their prior engagement in the corporate world shows through in attention to detail, an understanding of their guests, and embracing the opportunity to build new and lasting relationships.
There are suprises . . . all good . . . at virtually every turn. Cookies on a first-name arrival, dogs gleefully running a greeting to you, fresh eggs from the henhouses, mounted memorabilia, chef-quality refrigerators and cooktops/ovens, bath/shower resort-quality amenities. And woven throughout is the urbane and quiet sophistication John and Linda bring to everything.
My wife and I stayed almost a week at the Timberdoodle cottage. Its one bedroom was perfect. So was its privacy, comfy linens, sitting area and kitchen facilities. We have our eyes on the River Lodge for our next stay as a couple, and on the main lodge to bring our extended family together at some future time.
We used the boat and kayaks on the waters each day for non-stressful recreation. That option led to a remarkable angling adventure. Firepits extend the evening's possiblities.
We left Ruffed Grouse Lodge with the hope of building a longer relationship with everyone there. That, I believe, is a remarkable testimonial.
(One tip: dining options -- restaurants, diners, supper clubs -- are not a high point of the Phillips area. Bring your best food and drink, or buy in town, and cook for yourself in the pleasant atmosphere of the Ruffed Grouse properties.)
Phillips is the Price County Seat. No stop lights, no parking meters. A nearby airport handles private jets. Price County is the Ruffed Grouse Capital of the World designated by the Ruffed Grouse Society.
