About Barry Donovan

The Kickapoo Valley has a special place in our hearts as we grew up here and came back to raise our family in this beautiful area. We have three grown boys who love to visit and enjoy the Kickapoo Valley and all it has to offer. We love to share this unique property with family and friends and welcome you to join us too.

Barry Donovan purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Barry Donovan chose Wisconsin

We purchased this piece of land several years ago from friends and neighbors, and built the cabin bit by bit over the years with the help of many friends, family, and local craftsmen. We enjoy it's beauty and want to share it with you!

What makes this cabin unique

This setting is like no other. We have a top quality trout stream steps from the front door. Abundant wildlife in every season. The views are gorgeous all around. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on the porch, watching the wildlife, hearing the sounds of Bear Creek trickling by, enjoying a fire in the fire pit after dark, and just relaxing.

Never Disappointed!

  • 5 of 5

This is our third year staying at the Bear Creek Retreat, and once again we were thrilled with our stay. Barry is very nice, and was there to greet us. The upgrades to the cabin were great. Will be back again, no doubt!

My family and I had a wonderful time at this property. Barry was fabulous and took great care of us. My boys were able to fish all day, the dog played and my husband and I walked along the stream. Speaking of fishing the boys caught some HUGE trout. At night we had a fire and enjoyed the howling coyotes and the deer on the opposite hill. We will definitely be coming back. Thanks Barry for a great experience!

Heaven on Earth, Get Away From It All, Catch Trout!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My Dad (mid 70s and doesn't move great) and I were looking for a good place to getaway and have some fun and Trout Fish! I will say that I am not a great fly fisherman. But, this stream is not only gorgeous and it had the BEST Trout Fishing. Brookies and big browns and yes I caught fish like I knew what I was doing!! I did go to the Driftless fly fishing store and asked what I should be throwing, that helped. Unfortunately, my dad caught more than I did, so I will hear about that for a while. Cabin is fantastic and face the best scenery. Owners were fabulous and responsive! Can't wait to go back!!! Also Viroqua is a cool town, 15 minutes away....

Wonderful Memorial Day Weekend. Serene!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic reunion with friends at your cabin! There were 6 of us (one family from Madison and one family from Minneapolis). Four in our party are fly-fisherpeople so they were in seventh heaven. All of us were so relaxed and comfortable. We wished we could have stayed a week!

Tip: If you"re this close, don"t miss dinner at the Driftless Cafe in Viroqua. I would drive 2 hours just for that!

Cozy and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Great 5 days and nights in drift less area. Accommodations were perfect for sleeping in, listening to babbling brook, watching wildlife frolic and play, campfire and star gazing. Highly recommend this place for a couple or the whole family. We brought mountain bikes and enjoyed the Kickapoo reserve, Elroy-Sparta and Sidie Hollow, plus not too far from Wisconsin Dells where we enjoyed miniature golf and meal. Owner was terrific, he definitely takes pride in his place and rightfully so. I would definitely stay here again

The Perfectly Luxurious Family Camping Experience

  • 5 of 5

This is such a beautiful property, in a perfect location, with very attentive and wonderful owners. My family (including my parents, sister, brother-in-law, wife, our dog, and sometimes niece and nephew) goes on a canoe trip at the beginning of every summer. We alternate sites each year and we usually stay at a campground in cabins with cookstoves, outhouses, and off site showers. It was our turn to plan this year, and we really wanted to bring our Iowa family up to Wisconsin to enjoy the Driftless area and canoe the Kickapoo River.

Imagine our pleasant surprise when we stumbled upon this gem of a property on the Bear Creek, in an extremely beautiful setting surrounded by wildlife (we saw deer, sandhill cranes and a couple of trout in the stream). This cabin has everything, including family WiFi, firewood for the firepit, marshmallow sticks, friendly games, a gas grill, pizza oven, microwave, and even a blender. It is very clean and is beautifully decorated with freshly mowed trails around the property. Our dog just loved it.

Our family was so impressed we have already started talking about coming back next year for our annual trip.
