Overview

Orcas Island House Rental Photos and Description

Our 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, house (described by realtors when we bought it as 'Hilltop Haven') is located on the largest, hilliest, and we think the most beautiful of the San Juan Islands, Orcas Island. It is located at an elevation of 500 feet on the western side of Rosario Hill, has great westerly water and island views, and a perfect deck to watch spectacular sunsets from. The house is located on 4 acres in a private, quiet and wooded neighborhood. While neighbors are close by, you do not see other houses from our home, but you are likely to see plenty of wildlife!

We are located just 10 minutes drive from the quaint town of Eastsound where you will find all the amenities you will need including groceries, shopping, art galleries, restaurants, cafes, library, bank, skate park, tennis, playgrounds airport, etc. We are just a 2 minute drive (or 10 min walk) from Moran State Park, the 3rd largest state park in Washington, where you will find miles of hiking, boating, swimming, fishing and camping, as well as Mt. Constitution, from where you will find unbeatable views of the surrounding islands.

The home is located just a 20 minute drive from the ferry landing, so you can easily hop on an inter-island ferry and explore the other islands to your hearts content. Use our home as a base to explore all the fun the islands bring - sailing, kayaking, whale watching, visiting farms, exploring other towns, etc.

Our home was built in 1992 and has a Pacific Northwest style. Downstairs you will find an open floor format with a well equipped kitchen, dining room that seats 8 adults, living room with fireplace and TV, sunroom with seating, library with plenty of books and music as well as toys and games for the kids, and a half bath. Upstairs you will find a master bedroom with full bath and walk in closet, two additional bedrooms, and a second full bath and laundry room. The house sleeps a maximum of 8 adults and 1 toddler. Two of the bedrooms have queen beds, one has a double bed and a toddler bed and there are two twin fold out beds in the downstairs library.

We have wireless internet, music throughout the home, telvision with DVD that has access to streaming from the internet if you bring your laptop, but no cable.

Outside the home has 3 decks, one of which is large and has spectacular sunsets looking over East Sound, Turtleback mountain and the Canadian Gulf Islands. A second deck is off the kitchen and has an outdoor grill. The third deck is off the master bedroom. There is plenty of room for the kids to play outside and we have swings, hammock, and even a little tipi for the kids to play in.

About Jan Neutz

My name is Jan and I have two wonderful little girls, Hana (16) and Camille (13). We live in Seattle and travel to our home on Orcas Island as much as possible, all year long. It is a very special place to us. We love to hike, boat and swim on Orcas Island, we love our town, and we love to explore all that the islands have to offer. We have a dog named Max who loves the island too!

Jan Neutz purchased this house in 1999

Why Jan Neutz chose Orcas Island

When I first came to visit the San Juan islands in the early 1990's, I was struck by the beauty of Orcas Island and just kept coming back. I knew that eventually I wanted to own a piece of this island and in 1999 that dream came true when our family purchased this wonderful home. We love the combination of recreational activities that we can do here - on the ocean as well as at the Moran State Park and we enjoy all that the picturesque town of Eastsound brings - all the amenities as well as well a strong sense of community. We also love exploring the other San Juan islands when we get the chance.

What makes this house unique

When we saw this home in 1999 we instantly fell in love with it.

The Pacific NW open design, custom architecture, and all the wood in the house felt very warm and unique. We loved the large deck and amazing westerly sunset views of Turtleback Mountain and the Islands. We loved the easy floor plan. We loved the private, quiet feeling of the neighborhood and that there would be a place for kids to play. We loved the location - both the proximity to the park and all the recreational activities that would bring for us, and the short drive to town.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful 3-generation vacation in this terrific house. It is beautiful and very well appointed, with lots of features to comfort body and spirit. There are great views all around, and it feels like the owner has been thoughtful about what could be desired in a vacation rental. Further, there are personal touches all over that make the environment human and homey. Ella (3) liked the"hello Kitty" dishes, Toby (6) loved the tipi, we all loved the well supplied kitchen (yes, there was even an oyster knife), and the proximity to the state park and lake.

Beautiful views; cozy house

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at the hilltop haven. The house is nicely furnished with plenty of room for all. The library is full of games, books, and toys - the adults had fun doing multiple jigsaw puzzles while the kids loved exploring the books and toys. The kitchen is very well stocked and even has nice touches like crab crackers and an oyster knife. The views are incredible with amazing sunsets. Jan was easy to work with and accommodating of a few special requests. I would definitely recommend!

Fabulous weekend at Orcas!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time while staying at this home last weekend. The pictures really don't do the home justice! Great views, great layout and was very relaxing while we were in the home. We were able to find everything we needed, the whole home is fully stocked. Very easy stay throughout, and the owner was very helpful leading up to our stay. Also, very conveniently located for those that would like to partake in the outdoor activities Orcas Island has to offer. Our whole group would love to return! Thanks, Jan!

Would stay here again in a heartbeat!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this home and the location! The views were fantastic, the setting was quiet, private and woodsy, yet close to the lovely town of Eastsound and fabulous trails in Moran State park. The house is well-stocked, spacious, very comfortable and tastefully done. We felt right at home. We really enjoyed Orcas Island - we plan to return to the San Juans and would stay at Hilltop Haven again in a heartbeat.

Wonderful place for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Everything was easy- from booking through check out.

We had a wonderful week at the house. It is an easy walk to Moran State Park and a short drive into Eastsound. The furniture was comfortable and well suited to our group of 5 adults. The kitchen was beautifully stocked with sharp knives, plenty of pots and pans, nice dishes, tea pots, coffee makers, and everything you need if you love to cook. We didn't need the plasticware, but there were cups, bowls and plates for little ones as well.

The views are terrific, and we spent a good amount of time reading on the deck. An extra deck chair or two would be a nice addition.

The house was clean, and everything was in good condition. Two heads up: First, the mattresses are not spring mattresses if that's a deal. The master has a futon with two soft toppers. The queen has a futon with a memory foam mattress, and the double is a futon with one topper. We took off the toppers/memory foam mattresses for firmer beds, and all was fine. The second thing is that the house is in a Canadian cell service area. There is a phone with free long distance in the house, so that takes care of that. Wi-fi in the house is excellent, so you can sync up with that if needed.

Speaking of wi-fi, one of us ended up having a large work assignment. The internet service was fabulous. On the few nights we weren't playing board games, we were able to use netflix and game online easily.

We hiked most of the trails at the park, took a kayak trip around Sucia Island, bought some fabulous salmon off of the boat in East Sound, shopped in the art shops, visited some farms for fiber & yarn, and ate some great food in town. One of the best family vacation spots we've found. We would happily rent this house and do it all over again!

We had a good time

  • 4 of 5

Home was stocked with lots of children's toys as well as games for adults. Good location. Disappointed in how dirty the home was. I did let the owner know and hopefully she will take care of it. Kitchen was well stocked and we had a great time. My favorite room was the sun room.

Definitely not pet friendly but the owner is upfront about that which I really appreciated.

Owner's Response: Wow, thanks a lot! A couple of cobwebs in the sunroom warrants "dirty"?? I have a great cleaner, so renters beware of this guests comments!

Beautiful house and wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

My family rented this beautiful house for a one week stay in summer 2014 and absolutely loved it. The house is spacious (we comfortably fit 6 adults and a small dog), with gorgeous views and plenty of space to hang around and relax. The location is also nice, in a wooded area within walking distance of Moran state park, and a short drive into town. (You will want a car if you stay here.)

Orcas Island is also a great island to visit, with a cute little town and lots of good food. Definitely don't miss Brown Bear Baking, Kathryn Taylor Chocolates, or Doe Bay Cafe.

Highly recommend this place.
