About Sherry Kauppi

We are the third generation to live and work on the property outside of Gay. It began as a commercial fishing operation and now is a recreation area that caters to those who enjoy nature. One side has a small campsite for up to 7 hook-ups. The other side has the vacation homes. Only one house is completed at this time, but plans are in the works to renovate up to 5 others. We have worked, played, picked berries, swam, and rested on these docks and this land since our earliest memories. The boys in the family went fishing for lake trout and whitefish, on Lake Superior with Dad. The girls climbed on net reels and picked the berries. Bob, the host, lives on the site at this time and Sherry, the sister who is also a co-host, has a place in Hancock. The Kauppi family has been in the hospitality business for 3 generations as well. They own and operated the Pilot House Resort, and the Isle Royale Ferry Service and later they built and ran the King Copper Motel, all in Copper Harbor. When he was a boy, our Dad, Sully, used to live in Gay in the winter and in Copper Harbor in the summer. He had cross country skied from Gay to Copper Harbor at times when there was no grooming on a trail. He told us funny stories of how they brought their cow from Gay to Copper Harbor and back. So our roots on this peninsula run deep and we are happy to share our love for the place with each of you.

Why Sherry Kauppi chose Michigan

The uniqueness of the land at Dockside is headlined by the view. You can look over Lake Superior and see the Huron Mountains on the other side of the Keweenaw Bay. The spot is somewhat protected from the west winds, so it is often extra friendly for boating and water sports. The shoreline is sandstone with sections of clean white sand. Plus toward the town of Gay, there are sections of black sand left over from the former mill and mining activities in the area. On the other hand, when the wind blows in a storm from the east, we can enjoy watching some fabulous waves crashing as the water pounds on the breakwalls. Our facebook page highlights some pictures from those times. Nature creates dramatic photo opps for us in all seasons and in all weather.

What makes this house unique

The house at Dockside is our newest addition. In its former life, it was housing for the Air Force personnel and their families at an air base near Gratiot Lake. The houses were moved to the site in Gay and are being renovated with love and care. They are great for couples and families who want to enjoy nature's rugged beauty. Lake Superior is in all her glory. If you also want modern comforts and all the amenities of a well maintained kitchen, for meal prep options, this is your place. We envision that the first house will be a favorite with our brides or the parents of the bride. We also hope that baby boomers will find it is the best of all worlds, a bit of luxury on the lake. Also we have had family reunion folks enjoy the house as couples from around the country came together to revisit their family stories.

Little ones can sled or ride their machines around the grounds safely. The bigger ones can store trailers while they take their machines on the great local trail systems. The ATV and snowmobile trails literally run right trough our property. So convenient! The views of the lake are awesome from the comforts of the house, from the cool double dock/marina, and from all points along the shore. Your vacation at Dockside will be comfortable, fun, and full of memories. If you have a special request, please mention it. We are truly happy to take extra steps to make your feel welcome.

Snowmobilers Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. From waking up less than 100 feet from the breathtaking view of Lake Superior to having access to the entire property for the kids on their snowmobiles, it was amazing. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful and the local knowledge was worth the price alone. The owners really added the little touch when we opened cabinets and found them stocked with snacks for all to enjoy. The house was very clean, tidy and comfortable. I highly recommend this location.

Dockside has beaches

The Keewenaw Peninsula in Upper Michigan is a wonderful destination spot for nature lovers. Our house is part of a resort sitting on the south shore near the middle of the peninsula. This makes it unique. The views are awesome, so in any season it is a thrill be to so close to the Lake. To explore the Keweenaw, you'll find history comes alive in museums, culture and art are celebrated in shops and galleries. Colored leaves on the trees can be a show in themselves in splendor in the Fall. Driving to any site on the peninsula from Dockside Resort is a pleasure. It takes a short drive to get to the theaters in Houghton in one direction, or to the Civil War Re-enactments at Fort Wilkins in Copper Harbor in the other direction. You are only 20 minutes to a charter boat for fishing or touring in LacLaBelle. We have room for small pleasure crafts, sailboats, and even a commercial fishing boat at the dock on our land. The dock was first built by Charles Kauppi in the 1920's. He was a commercial fisherman and who established the first ferry service to Isle Royale National Park. He was our grandfather. You can see a hand-carved wood statue of him near our upcoming convenience store. Willard "Sully" Kauppi, the father of our clan, also fished from this site from his childhood years to his retirement in the early 1970's. A wooden statue of Sully will be added to the site shortly.

The breakwalls have been built and rebuilt by the men in the family for three generations. Currently, the site is being tended to and expanded by Bob Kauppi. Sherry Kauppi, a sister, is also a co-host. We welcome you fish with a rod and reel right off the dock. Many visitors have caught their limit right here.

Weddings are popular on our one-of-a-kind dock. We are happy to help you make events special if we know about them in advance. We have a stage for live music and room for picnics, gatherings and receptions.

The town of Gay is dear to us. Grandpa Charles came from Finland in the late 1890's. He was on the wrestling team for the then Suomi College. He learned English while studying there. Sully Kauppi learned English as a boy attending the Gay School. The children and siblings attended the school where all 8 grades learned in the same room. The school closed around 1960 and it recently has become a great place to visit to for local history and artifacts. Gay played a significant role in the Copper Boom story of the Keweenaw. We invite you to check it out.

Live music is available in many venues all year long. From open festivals in the local parks in the summer and fall to the variety of local bars who provide stages for guests in the winter months, you can get your fill of dancing and toe tapping.

The bicycle trails on the Keweenaw Peninsula, especially near Copper Harbor, have become famous for their challenges and beauty. If that is your thing you will love exploring the forests and ridges while pedaling your bike. Highway 41 is designated a scenic touring route, and you'll find the smaller local roads are also designed to capture awesome views. Riding on motorcycles or in comfy cars is a popular past time. Drive to towns or other shores for a day ride, maybe catch a sunset on Brockway Mountain and then be back to Dockside in time for a bonfire.

As you can see there is much to do.

And if you came to relax and do very little, we will try to not disturb you so you can unplug during your stay in our lovely house. There is room to stretch out and relax on the new furniture. The upscale stainless appliances in the kitchen make it easy to prep a meal on-site. You will enjoy a leisurely quiet dinner, at home, looking at the gorgeous view from your own huge windows. We look forward to meeting and serving you.

Sincerely yours,

Your hosts, Bob and Sherry Kauppi
