We wanted to let you know we had a great stay at Villa Sophia and just loved going around the lake on the ferries, the downtown area of Menaggio, Belaggio, Varenna, Lugano and day trip to Milan. George did a great job making sure we were taken care of when we needed something, even after hours, that was very helpful! Thank you again.
Overall we really liked this villa. The location was very nice, and had great views of Lake Como. We could drive quick to town and get the ferries, and eat and shop. Also can get to Lugano and to other Swiss Cities fairly easily. The bedrooms were nice and both kitchens, even the small one on the first floor, and we were comfortable. The negatives: Keep in mind that the road it is on is a main road and route so is quite busy and can be loud. Also it can be quite tricky pulling in and out of the driveway with the blind turns. The villa was fine for our toddlers, but not ideal, even with the pool. The pool water was a bit cool, which left nothing outside for the kids to do in the yard; and also the inside has dangerous steps. But even with the few negatives, overall we really liked our stay here :)

This beautiful lake region of Italy is not the best for skiing as you may imagine, despite its scenery, crisp air and near perfect visibilty and mountains capped in winter snow. It does however have Skiing opportunities at local resorts for a day out.
There is a small ski area on Mt. Lema , not more than 10 km from Lugano, but you have to be lucky to have enough snow for skiing. In Ticino, the local Swiss Canton, the best places to ski are probably either San Bernardino (south of the pass of the same name) or Airolo (south of Gotthard pass). Both are reachable in about 1 hour by car across the Swiss border.
There are direct trains to Airolo as well from Lugano and hence from Italian Stations. To S. Bernardino there is only a bus connection. For more snow try Andermatt (on the north side of Gotthard pass) which has normally good snow conditions and a good choice of runs.
The closest major ski resorts are St. Moritz and Madesimo toward the Splugen Pass which is approx. 100K
