Rodanthe House Rental Photos and Description

PLEASE VISIT OUR OTHER TWO OCEAN FRONT PROPERTIES IN RODANTHE: VRBO # 584841 AND 403480.

We grew up in central North Carolina, but we've called Hatteras Island our second home. Mermaid's Tears (another name for seaglass which is found naturally along the North Carolina coast) is just steps away from the sandy beach. One of our favorite things is sitting on the deck watching the dolphin (yes, we see them just about every day) and, of course, the wonderful sunrises and sunsets. Using our binoculars we are even able to identify the fish caught at the Rodanthe Fishing Pier, only 100 yards away.

Mermaid's Tears encompasses a reversed house plan which is very common to many homes along the Outer Banks. This simple means that the living area, ie, kitchen, dining and living room are located on the highest level.

Our second floor level of Mermaid's Tears includes a very large living open area (great for entertaining) with flat screen TV/DVD and CD stereo system. A large floral sectional couch and two chairs face the two 8' sliders for a magnificent view of the ocean. The dining area, open to the living area and kitchen, has seating for ten. The modern kitchen has all cooking needs should one decide never to venture out to any of the great restaurants in the area. There is also counter seating for four. There is a very nice king bedroom upstairs with connecting bath and shower. This bedroom has its own slider to the outside oceanfront deck. A flat screen TV and DVD are also in this bedroom.

Three of our bedrooms are downstairs, the master has a king bed and day bed with a large bathroom with a separate shower and jacuzzi tub. The slider leads to a covered deck which is virtually on top of the ocean. This bedroom has a flat screen TV and DVD. Another bedroom downstairs, very spacious with a king bed, has a large window and a slider to a covered deck over-looking the ocean. This bed and breakfast style bedroom has a flat screen TV and DVD. The third bedroom has two pyramid bunk beds. Both have a double bed; one with a pullout trundle. This bedroom has two windows; one with a view of the ocean, the other a view of the sound in the distance. This is truly a unique bedroom as it invites an aquarium decor. This bedroom also has a flat screen TV and DVD. This bedroom and the second bedroom share a full bathroom. Also, downstairs is a nice welcoming foyer and a full washer and dryer closet. While staying in Mermaid's Tears, exploring is a must. Hatteras Island is simply the most beautiful place on earth - where the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound is separated by a thin, fragile slice of land. Hatteras Lighthouse, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, small villages of Avon, Buxton, Waves, Frisco and Salvo are all within a short drive.

In Rodanthe, explore the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Museum, Civil War Battle of Chicmacomico Races, and try to identify each of the over 400 species of birds. Or simple lay back and enjoy reading and watching the surf.

FREE Wireless Internet access via Silicon Travel for this property (computer not provided, bring your laptop).

PROPERTY DAMAGE PROTECTION: No security deposit is collected. Over years of renting our property, we have found guests prefer to pay a Property Damage Protection fee ($69) which covers all accidental damages to the vacation rental up to $2,500.

About Frank Henson

Frank and Beverly are the proud owners of 'Mermaid's Tears' as well as two other properties closeby. We have been vacationing/living on the outer banks for years and will retire in Rodanthe someday. It is the perfect place to be. Both Frank and Beverly are NC licensed builders. Frank retired from the United States Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel. We have three Brussels Griffons, Frankie, Annie Rose and Scout, and they always travel with us to the Outer Banks.

Frank Henson purchased this house in 2011

Why Frank Henson chose Cape Hatteras

The Outer Banks has been our favorite vacation spot for years. This is the third, and most recent, property we have bought in this area. The other is VRBO #403480 and is located a short walk down the beach) It's easy driving from our home in Greensboro, NC. It's close to great restaurants, shopping, golf, sightseeing yet very remote and very casual. Also, the Outer Banks is routinely rated in the top five US beaches by US News, National Geographic, ABC News and CBS News. 'Mermaid's Tears' is an exceptional rental property with all the amenities for a perfect family vacation.

What makes this house unique

Sitting on the front porch in the evening while enjoying a glass of wine or ice tea, feeling the ocean breeze while watching late surfers and swimmers has become our most treasured time. Early in the morning, we'll catch up on news and sports via wifi while sipping coffee and snacking on delicious pastries. Great early morning and late evening walks on the beach fulfill perfect days in Rodanthe.

Great place to stay. House is right on the beach.

  • 4 of 5

House was very clean when we arrived. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed to cook. If you like being close to the beach this is the house. The ocean at high tide came right up to the house. We stayed the first week in October when there was an nor'easter and hurricane Matthew. The pictures are accurate for the inside but are a little dated for the outside. The parking area has a concert pad. Looking forward to renting again next year.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the nice review of Mermaid's Tears. We appreciate your time in preparing this review and we know it will help potential guests make up their mind. We try very hard to make our property pleasing and enjoyable and exactly what you would expect an ocean front house to be like upon arrival. Thank you for mentioning our kitchen, our favorite spot to create great meals, gather and plan our days. BTW, we plan to put tile down on the kitchen floor in time for the 2017 season. We plan several other updates throughout the house as well. Thank you again, and we hope to see you back soon.

What A Wonderful House and Location

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from Mermaid's Tears which was a first visit to OBX. The house was perfect for 3 couples of sisters and brothers with plenty of room. House has all the amenities in the kitchen, we used the slow cooker one day and even left a recipe; all the ingredients can be bought at the Dollar General store just down the road. High tide the waves come right up to the piers of the house which was really cool! We had a couple hiccups but between Shore Detail and the owner they were handled quickly and didn't make a huge impact on our week. Considering it is hurricane season we had great weather with just one morning of rain, a little rain doesn't stop the beachcombers looking for shells ... one of our party even found a shark's tooth. The sunrises are truly spectacular and we loved sitting on the decks and walking the beach. Rodanthe is quiet with not the hub-bub or other towns. There aren't a lot of dining choices but Sting Wray's, Lisa's Pizza (lots more then just pizza), Atlantic Cafe and Top Dog were very good. We drove up to Manteo which has a great boardwalk on the waterfront and wonderful boutique shopping, plus Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brothers memorial and of course Cape Hatteras and Bodie Island lighthouses. We would highly recommend Mermaid's Tears to anyone who wants a low key, kick back relaxing location!

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much for taking time to write a great review of Mermaid's Tears. We appreciate it very much, but most of all, we are truly happy your family loved the Outer Banks, Mermaid's Tears and that you made memories to last forever. Thanks also for mentioning some of our favorite things...Dollar General, Lisa's Pizzeria and especially, the awesome sunrises! Even the smallest things seem so special when with family and friends in Rodanthe....like, the Dollar General...never been to the one in Greensboro (where we live), but when we're in Rodanthe, we're there often. The mood, the locals & visitors, the provisions all seem to take on new meaning...not sure how to say or express it....but thanks for your comments and truly hope you and your family will visit again soon.

Wonderful, breathtaking, and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Just beautiful , the location was perfect. Sitting in the morning drinking your coffee on the top deck is just a great way to start your day. House has everything you need to cook, fully stocked kitchen , the best stocked kitchen I have ever seen for a rental, anything you can think of they probably have. The kitchen itself could use a little TLC. Had a wonderful stay could not of asked for anything better, everything was just wonderful.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the nice review...one of our favorite things too is having coffee in the morning just relaxing and watching the ocean. Never Changes. Our kitchen floor was damaged by a guest leaving a window open during a really bad storm...it's not that bad but we will be replacing it with tile prior to the 2017 season. Thank you again for taking time to write a review.

Perfect home for a family vacation!

  • 4 of 5

This house delivers even more than it promises! Our family unanimously voted to return a second year! The location is ideal; a great place for making many wonderful memories. The house is spacious and well-appointed and conducive to the needs of families or other groups. There are appropriate spaces for those that need privacy and ample shared living space with fabulous views for group activities. The kitchen is equipped with all the appropriate dishware, appliances and utensils. Rodanthe is a quaint village that offers a nice selection of small, locally owned and operated restaurants and shops for meals and excursions and outdoor activities.

The owners are delightful to work with and are very attentive to the maintenance of their property.

Just what I needed! Relaxing, and beyond.......

  • 5 of 5

The whole place is beautifully decorated in "beachy happiness". Both inside & outside there were plenty of places to sit & enjoy the spectacular views. I was able to relax & unwind like I haven't for months & months. It was just what I needed!!! My family & friends all agreed.

I look forward to a return trip, for sure!

Nice Vacation

  • 4 of 5

This was our first trip to the Outer Banks { Rodanthe }. It was me, my husband, our Yorkiepoo and my in-laws. It was a nice vacation home. You couldn't tell that it was a pet friendly home because it was clean and didn't smell like animals had been there. Very beautiful views from this home. It may have been the time of year but the wind was awful and that made it cold, and the ocean water was like ice water. With that being said we still had a wonderful vacation. I loved seeing the sun come up from the porch when the wind didn't blow me away. I loved being so close to the ocean, you are with in just a few feet from the water. We had a couple of issues pop up while we were there but they were taken care of. If I ever go back to this area I would rent this home again. Also may have been the time of the year but not a lot of places were open yet. There's some good restaurants close by, such as Good Winds, Lisa's Pizzeria, Stingwray's, Atlantic Coast Cafe, Leonardo's Pizza in Waves. Some of the places were only open Thur -Sat because it was to early in the season. Take the Ferry to Ocracoke Island. I was a nice little place to visit but be prepeared to wait a while on the ferry.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the very nice review and especially the comment about not being able to tell if Mermaid's Tears was a pet friendly rental...our property manager, Shore Details, really deserves the credit for the cleanliness and attention to detail in this regard. We are dog lovers and know there are many folks who would never vacation without their dogs. We also understand many of our guests do not bring their dogs so it is so important in this business to make all visitors are accommodated. We have replaced most of the carpets with wood floors and often clean/wash the remaining rugs 2-3 times a year. Thank you again for mentioning that your issues were addressed...again, our Property Manager is exceptional. Things do come up, things break, etc, etc...we insist on our response be proactive and fast. "Do what it takes to please the Guest".....your time is so precious to us and we want you to enjoy your hard earned vacation! We will do everything possible to make things happen if challenges arise. Again, thank you for your review and hope to see you back some day.
