Delightful!

  • 5 of 5

We had a marvelous time with a family reunion spread across the Tea House and the property right across the street. Those of us staying in the Tea House loved its comfortable and charming interior and all the thoughtful furnishings and kitchen items. The bedrooms are all upstairs, along with a full bath, and downstairs was another bath with a stall shower, a sweet and good sized dining room, and the living room and screened porch. There is a big, flat backyard, and a deck off the back, as well as a place to rinse off sandy feet and a clothesline for wet bathing suits and towels. As some other reviewers have commented, you can just feel yourself slow down and relax while eating breakfast on the screened in porch off the living room. Sleeping upstairs under the ceiling fan with the lake breeze coming through the windows was heavenly. We loved our stay! The owner/agent, Kathy, was very helpful too, and always responded promptly to any questions we had.

Great Week on the Lakeshore

  • 4 of 5

We spent our summers growing up on the Lakeshore and its always great to get back! We rented the Tea Room Cottage the last week of July. My sisters and our kids enjoyed a relaxing, sunny week! This cottage is all you want for a week at the beach; great places for gathering, the dining room, living room, screened in porch, and the large back yard worked perfectly for our group. Lots of card games, beach time including sunsets, and great summer meals on the grill!

family reunion

This is indeed a very vintage Michigan cottage. Path to small beach right down the road is lovely, screened porch is sweet. Beds-very uncomfortable. Baths-need updating badly. The kitchen is extemely basic and very sunny. We enjoyed our stay but glad we weren't planning on cooking. I would say overall-if baths and kitchen were updated and new beds were purchased it would be worth the price.

My stay at The Tea Room 2015

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the Tea Room for the Month of June this year. I'm a long time renter of this cottage and every year I enjoy it that much more. I would have to check all those boxes because this cottage is a great place to stay for all ages. I always look forward to coming back and seeing what's new in the cottage and I enjoy my summer days in Douglas.

We were guests at the tea room Labor Day 2014, had a great time!

The Tea room is a classic Michigan cottage, with plenty of vintage charm.

It doesn't have lots of extra bells and whistles, but it's clean and has everything you need to create a special vacation.

We spent much of our time enjoying the sand, sun and surf, great location with private shared beach but we had plenty of time to enjoy the screen porch, dinner and drinks on the deck and played loads of games in the great backyard.

Basic Michigan cottage

  • 3 of 5

The Tea Room is billed as a vintage cottage and is definitely worn around the edges. It is in a wonderful location with easy access to the beach and has a great backyard and screened porch for games and family gatherings. The house is advertised as sleeping up to 10. We had that number of people and feel that is too large a group for the tiny cottage to handle since it has only two small, very basic bathrooms which were stretched by constant use. The cottage was not particularly clean and could use a good handyman to patch screens, clear plumbing problems and do basic maintenance. The refrigerator died during our stay. The rental company did a great job of replacing it quickly and the owner was happy to reimburse us for lost food. Would recommend this cottage for a small family or friends group who want a relaxed, low-maintenance setting.

Owner's Response: The Tea Room is a classic cottage with vintage charm. It does indeed offer a fantastic location, private 'shared beach' access on a beautiful, pristine area on Lake Michigan. The cottage is charming with many wonderful features, a comfortable living room with large, wood-burning fireplace, a great back yard, deck & screened porch with some lovely new furniture. It features a large, bright dining room, comfortable bedrooms. The downstairs bath is a basic bath with shower stall only but is freshly painted and clean. The upper bath is actually quite roomy offering a lovely deep, vintage, claw-foot tub which was refinished last year. It is freshly painted with brand new curtains and shower curtains as well. The baths and kitchen are always thouroughly sanitized between guests. The kitchen is roomy with updated cabinets and offers a brand new microwave and refrigerator. Yes, the refridge went out, unfortunate, but was due to a power surge caused by a big storm. It was replaced within 7 hours. The cottage itself is older but in good condition. It is always clean, we are known for this! We are extremely particular about this to the point of, if needed, doing the floors 2 & 3 times to make sure we get all the sand which comes up from all the beach fun. I suspect that perhaps what our guests thought might not be 'clean' is the fact that a couple of the floors, kitchen/bath lino & porch floor (painted), are a bit older, and are an oatmeal color, and though clean, don't look super bright and fresh. The porch floor too, though always 'clean' does need sanding and repainting, on slate for this coming spring. The screen/storm windows too are older, but again are clean as are the sills and windows, checked and cleaned as needed each turnover. This group of guests did number 10 which exceeded our maximum number and at their request was given an exception. They arrived with a very large volume of belongings as well so I can see how they may have felt cottage a bit small for them. We do prefer smaller parties as well. But the cottage has ample space for 8 very comfortably. The Tea Room is, as are most cottages, a work of love in progress. No place is ever 'perfect' but The Tea Room is a wonderful cottage offering a spectacular location. Our pricing is in line with other area cottages and amenities. We work to improve every year so that our guests may have the best experience... Please read our other 'glowing reviews'. Come stay with us. You'll be glad you did!
