Overview

Elk Meadows House Rental Photos and Description

This lovely home is snugly tucked into the very top edge of a 9,000ft. ridge, boasting spectacular 180 degree views over the Cimarron and the Sneffels ranges. The house is secluded at the very end of the road with it’s own cul de sac, hence no traffic other than that which is intended for this address.

This home features two master suites and a third sleeping area with a full size innerspring futon and a full bathroom across the hall.

The main area upstairs incorporates large living area with gas fireplace, dining area and spacious kitchen, cathedral ceiling and full length windows looking out onto the wraparound deck to maximize the breathtaking views. There is a gas barbecue grill on the upper deck. The fully equipped kitchen with Italian porcelain tile counters, granite sink, fridge with ice-maker, second fridge for drinks, smooth top range, dishwasher and compactor is a cook’s dream. The large island has four stools and the attached dining area seats eight with built in leaves in the dining table.

Phone, satellite flat screen TV and WIFI is available.

Large laundry has front load washer and dryer and Italian porcelain tiled floor, the main area has solid wood floors and Berber carpet in the bedrooms. We personally designed and custom built this home for retirement, an escape from the Phoenix summers and utilized quality materials for beauty and comfort. Custom made Roman shades at all windows and doors offer the most expansive views and extra insulation.

Downstairs is a beautiful large walk out basement area with in-floor heat and Berber carpet, a second master suite, small gas fire for ambience, with down comforter and identical 180 degree views of valley and mountains with full bathroom - when we are in residence we use this for our family and friends accommodation. There are two fold away beds also available.

Roads are open all year and there is much to offer for recreation in every season whether you are looking for a relaxing break from the world with a glass of wine on the deck or a good book by the fire, enjoying stunning sunsets or high energy sports in the mountains! The fabulous Telluride ski resort is less than an hour drive for snow sports in winter and hiking and biking and jeeping other seasons. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing from the door.

The famous Swiss- like town of Ouray is only 30 minutes drive, offering unique stores and restaurants and trailheads for hiking, biking and ATV’s

The National forrest is only minutes away.

The little town of Ridgway is 8 miles down the mountain, offering quaint stores, antiques and a variety of restaurants, including first rate Thai food and the award winning Colorado Boy Brewery with their fabulous pizzas. Bicycle rental and fishing excursions are available in the town.

Our friends and family have enjoyed many wonderful vacations with all there is to offer locally, excellent restaurants, unique stores and antiquing for the less energetic.

About Roslyn and Walter Atwood

We are each from coastal regions, one from Boston the other from Australia so our first love may have been the ocean but the lure of the cool mountains and the opportunity for family and friends to also enjoy winter sports made this location ideal. We needed a retirement escape from the oppressive heat of the AZ desert summers and everyone who has ever visited in any season has fallen in love with our mountain retreat.

Roslyn and Walter Atwood purchased this house in 2000

Why Roslyn and Walter Atwood chose Ridgway

In the mid 1990's we visited friends who had a cabin on this unique ridge overlooking pine and aspen forested valleys and mountain ranges. The first morning when we awoke to find three large bucks with huge antlers snoozing outside our bathroom window sold us on the area, the breathtaking views only cemented this goal! Since then we have observed multiple examples of the local wildlife, birds from tiny finches and brilliant bluebirds to Golden and Bald Eagles, elk, mountain lion and Black Bear. Our visitors highlight is likely to be a bear sighting!

What makes this house unique

There are only about 10 homes with this unique position and views and the enticement of living in a pristine forest of wildlife, the laid back lifestyle and a wonderful climate was irresistible so we determined to seek a lot on this same ridge. When this two acre lot came available, in spite of the challenges of building up here, we jumped at the chance to purchase the property and then with great care and loving attention to detail we built our home here in 2000.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Located about 8 miles up a dirt and gravel road with beautiful vistas around every curve. The house is in a peaceful quiet location literally at the end of the road. The sun rises over the mountains with you there to watch it on the porch, cup of coffee in hand. Wildlife and beautiful mountain views are everywhere. Hummingbirds by the dozens feed at the feeders and approach within inches so you can get a good look.

We had a bear visit us one night and try to pry open the top of the trash can. He was unsuccessful and walked away having provided the family some entertainment.

The house was nicely appointed with everything we needed, and was clean. This home exceeded our expectations and we can recommend it without reservation.

Perfect Home Base!!

  • 5 of 5

We come to the Ridgway/Ouray area every year and have been renting homes for the past 10 years. I believe this was one of our favorites!! The home was easy to find and easy to get to. We spent a lot of time on the deck watching the many Hummingbirds at the feeder! There was plenty of extra "food" made for us to keep the feeders filled, and we did so every day!!

The home itself was perfect! We felt very much welcomed and were immediately 'at home' for our trip!! We had great cell phone service as well as being connected via the internet when we needed it! The bed was very comfortable so we slept well!! I love opening the windows and sleeping with a natural breeze coming in!! I also loved the big shower in the upstairs master, but was able to have a bubble bath in the other upstairs bathroom one night! We really only used the upstairs 'main level', but the downstairs (2nd) master bedroom would have been perfect if we'd traveled with friends or family! It stayed nice and cool down there!

I cooked most nights and had everything I needed in the kitchen... lots of space to work with!! We had a small issue with the coffee pot having a tiny leak, but as long as we didn't fill it in the evening for the next morning, it worked fine! Walter went above and beyond though and immediately ordered a new one to be delivered the next day, which it was! We truly appreciated the attention to detail!

We love to off-road with our Toyota FJ Cruiser and were in town for the annual FJ Summit in Ouray!! The drive down the mountain and into Ouray was a pretty one, so we didn't mind at all! Someone had told us about CR5 a few years ago, and we'd driven up the mountain several times before just for the beautiful scenery! It was great to be so familiar with the drive "home" each night after our adventures on the trails! It's nice to have a home base for our off-roading adventures, as there are many opportunities (off road trails) in the area! We were fortunate enough to get some great photo ops at the house in the form of double rainbows, animals (including all the Hummingbirds) and of course, beautiful sunsets!

For anyone that loves chocolate and coffee I'd recommend Mouse's Chocolates in Ouray!! Yummy!! My stomach is growling just thinking about it!

We would rent this home again and hope to in the future!! We miss all the Hummers!! We can't recommend it enough!!

Our security deposit was immediately refunded, faster than any other home we've stayed in!!

Beautiful home with a beautiful view!

  • 5 of 5

This property was a wonderful place to stay. It was clean, and the grounds well taken care of. 2 Master Suites was a plus since our party consisted of 2 couples and we both had private bathrooms. The kitchen was well stocked and we enjoyed home-cooked meals while also enjoying the view from the dining room and the deck. We enjoyed trips to Ouray for shopping, sightseeing and dining, while also driving north to Montrose and other points of interest. Silverton was close as well for eating and shopping. Lots of places to go all within driving distance.

Our host was very helpful with answering any questions we had, especially before our arrival. This property comes highly recommended and we would love to stay here again!

Can't Beat the View!

  • 5 of 5

The property was beautiful and spacious with everything we needed. We enjoyed the access to Telluride and Ouray. Found ourselves just hanging out there one day when the weather didn't quite cooperate and just enjoyed the views. The road to get to the property is an experience in that it is rough and quickly got rougher when we had a couple days of rain but worth it to be "at the top" and look down on a fantastic view below.

Great Family Vacation.

  • 5 of 5

Walt and Roselyn have a shangrila on the side of the mountain near Ridgway Co.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here as hthe house was imacculate. We always try to leave the homes we stay in a lil'better than we fond them. That would have been impossible with this one. My wife, two daughters, son-in-law and grandkids loved this house as it were our own.

Everything you need is there. Plenty of room, spectacular views at every turn and wildlife a plenty. We saw it all, ncluding a Bear walking the road on CR 5 as we went down to Ridgway. Not once, but twice.

Comfy beds, great room for the family, a CLEAN grill, fabulous deck, great nights at the fire pit.

The area has plenty to do. We fished, we jeeped, we explored Ouray, Telluride, Sliverton and Montrose. Great location to just take a walk thru the trees down to the valley.

Returned home relaxed and refreshed.

Thank you for sharing your home with us.

We will most definitely be back.

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the spectacular views (which were FAR better than one can capture with a photograph), and the clean and very comfortable accommodations. The environment really helped us settle in and relax, which is why we came to SW Colorado in the first place! We'll be back and will recommend it highly to our friends and family.
