Secluded Mountain Home, Two Master Suites

Space 1,800 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

This lovely home is snugly tucked into the very top edge of a 9,000ft. ridge, boasting spectacular 180 degree views over the Cimarron and the Sneffels ranges. The house is secluded at the very end of the road with it’s own cul de sac, hence no traffic other than that which is intended for this address.

This home features two master suites and a third sleeping area with a full size innerspring futon and a full bathroom across the hall.

The main area upstairs incorporates large living area with gas fireplace, dining area and spacious kitchen, cathedral ceiling and full length windows looking out onto the wraparound deck to maximize the breathtaking views. There is a gas barbecue grill on the upper deck. The fully equipped kitchen with Italian porcelain tile counters, granite sink, fridge with ice-maker, second fridge for drinks, smooth top range, dishwasher and compactor is a cook’s dream. The large island has four stools and the attached dining area seats eight with built in leaves in the dining table.

Phone, satellite flat screen TV and WIFI is available.

Large laundry has front load washer and dryer and Italian porcelain tiled floor, the main area has solid wood floors and Berber carpet in the bedrooms. We personally designed and custom built this home for retirement, an escape from the Phoenix summers and utilized quality materials for beauty and comfort. Custom made Roman shades at all windows and doors offer the most expansive views and extra insulation.

Downstairs is a beautiful large walk out basement area with in-floor heat and Berber carpet, a second master suite, small gas fire for ambience, with down comforter and identical 180 degree views of valley and mountains with full bathroom - when we are in residence we use this for our family and friends accommodation. There are two fold away beds also available.

Roads are open all year and there is much to offer for recreation in every season whether you are looking for a relaxing break from the world with a glass of wine on the deck or a good book by the fire, enjoying stunning sunsets or high energy sports in the mountains! The fabulous Telluride ski resort is less than an hour drive for snow sports in winter and hiking and biking and jeeping other seasons. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing from the door.

The famous Swiss- like town of Ouray is only 30 minutes drive, offering unique stores and restaurants and trailheads for hiking, biking and ATV’s

The National forrest is only minutes away.

The little town of Ridgway is 8 miles down the mountain, offering quaint stores, antiques and a variety of restaurants, including first rate Thai food and the award winning Colorado Boy Brewery with their fabulous pizzas. Bicycle rental and fishing excursions are available in the town.

Our friends and family have enjoyed many wonderful vacations with all there is to offer locally, excellent restaurants, unique stores and antiquing for the less energetic.

About Roslyn and Walter Atwood

We are each from coastal regions, one from Boston the other from Australia so our first love may have been the ocean but the lure of the cool mountains and the opportunity for family and friends to also enjoy winter sports made this location ideal. We needed a retirement escape from the oppressive heat of the AZ desert summers and everyone who has ever visited in any season has fallen in love with our mountain retreat.

Roslyn and Walter Atwood purchased this house in 2000

Why Roslyn and Walter Atwood chose Ridgway

In the mid 1990's we visited friends who had a cabin on this unique ridge overlooking pine and aspen forested valleys and mountain ranges. The first morning when we awoke to find three large bucks with huge antlers snoozing outside our bathroom window sold us on the area, the breathtaking views only cemented this goal! Since then we have observed multiple examples of the local wildlife, birds from tiny finches and brilliant bluebirds to Golden and Bald Eagles, elk, mountain lion and Black Bear. Our visitors highlight is likely to be a bear sighting!

What makes this house unique

There are only about 10 homes with this unique position and views and the enticement of living in a pristine forest of wildlife, the laid back lifestyle and a wonderful climate was irresistible so we determined to seek a lot on this same ridge. When this two acre lot came available, in spite of the challenges of building up here, we jumped at the chance to purchase the property and then with great care and loving attention to detail we built our home here in 2000.

Located about 8 miles up a dirt and gravel road with beautiful vistas around every curve. The house is in a peaceful quiet location literally at the end of the road. The sun rises over the mountains with you there to watch it on the porch, cup of coffee in hand. Wildlife and beautiful mountain views are everywhere. Hummingbirds by the dozens feed at the feeders and approach within inches so you can get a good look.

We had a bear visit us one night and try to pry open the top of the trash can. He was unsuccessful and walked away having provided the family some entertainment.

The house was nicely appointed with everything we needed, and was clean. This home exceeded our expectations and we can recommend it without reservation.

Very beautiful setting at the end of a dirt road. Views from the deck are incredible.

  • 4 of 5

This is a very nice home. The kitchen is well stocked with appliances and untensils...which was important to us since we like to cook and enjoy the scenery for most meals. The grill on the deck was also very useful. Outstanding views from outside the home. We spent most mornings and evenings on the deck enjoying the beautiful mountain views.

The lower floor is a bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen is located upstairs with a den and other bedrooms. This was fine, but be prepared to carry food and ice chests and other needed things up the stairs (available inside or outside the home).

The owners had many magazines and maps and brochures available in the home...which was very useful to us since we were new to this part of Colorado.

The early morning sunrise comes through the windows and shines into the lower bedroom. For us, this wasn't a big deal because we are early risers anyway for the most part. If you want to sleep in, you might want to sleep in the upstairs bedroom.

Overall, this is a very nice home. It is located at the end of a road in a dead end. This gives it a feel of seclusion. You will have neighbors just down the road, and another house is visible just down the ridge but it isn't too close. The house is located 7 miles outside of Ridgway on dirt roads. The roads are not bad...a few washboards...but it was extremely dusty. It didn't rain at all during our one week stay so I don't know how muddy the roads would be if it had rained.

The owners reply promptly to any messages you send and seem very eager to please. I highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a quiet place to stay outside of the surrounding towns. It was perfect for our honeymoon as a central location to explore the surrounding towns of Telluride, Silverton, Ouray, Mountain Village, Durango, and Montrose.

Breathtaking View

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay. The view in every direction is amazing, tree's were gold and red, snow on the mountain tops -- you just couldn't ask for anything better. The bed was very comfortable, a lot of open room in the house and the décor has a warm--welcome feel. Exceptionally clean and neat.

Thank you Walter and Roslyn for sharing it with us!!
