About the property

You Won't Find A Cottage With Better Views On The West Side Of Cape Breton

This gorgeous, cedar-shingled Cape Breton cottage is perched above the ocean with epic views and sea sounds. You will love lounging on the chaisses and BBQing on the multi-level deck, or relaxing inside where you look out and see some of the most spectacular vistas in all of Cape Breton: endless ocean, beach and Sea Wolf Island (framed perfectly, as if for your personal pleasure!) You don't just enjoy the views- you hear the ocean beside you, sometimes lapping at the rocks below, sometimes crashing; it's almost hypnotizing. There's a short video in the "Photos" section.

This cottage books Saturday to Saturday only, when you are choosing your dates. If your week is already booked, please take a look at our other cottages (Homeaway #203860, #382569, #3490361; VRBO # 197014, # 394237, #3490361ha )

Summer evenings are cool –great for sleeping– often with brilliant sunsets. Lobster boats haul in their catch out front, whales and eagles pass by, seals pop up in front to check you out, and other wildlife provides distraction as you figure out how to spend your day. Beaches? Hiking? Fine Dining? Music? All close at hand…

There’s all the kitchen equipment you need at TumbleSea to prepare a feast from local specialties. You will love the supple leather couch, which is the perfect spot for connecting with friends, digging into a good book, or just gazing out at the sparkling water. You can watch storms develop on the horizon, and play themselves out before they ever reach you. The magnificently wide stairs outside (as big as a bleacher!), gently cascade toward the ocean, and ask you to relax and take in the clear, starry night skies, and steady cadence of the light of the island lighthouse.

Nestled amongst trees, roses and the water, TumbleSea cottage offers complete privacy, complete comfort, and an unforgettable week. All this just five minutes from three great beaches and the Cabot Trail, a half hour from the National Park, and twenty minutes from two of the world’s finest golf courses at Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs.

How close to heaven can you get in this life?

We arrived on a brilliantly sunny day in mid August. A modest tree lined driveway to the cottage belies the panoramic beauty of this property. The grounds surrounding TumbleSea are intimately private. An impressive deck rewards us with 180 degrees of breathtaking views that follow us into a well appointed cottage with a floor plan and décor that clearly signify a profound devotion to artistry and comfort. The physical experience of TumbleSea and all it offers is intoxicating.

When we met Stewart for our intro to the area we were so relieved that his name and the words pretentious or pompous ass would NOT be used in the same sentence. He has been blessed with a healthy sense of humor and his recommendations are SPOT ON! For purely selfish reasons we won't share the details of where we visited (when we could manage to rip our bodies away from the cottage). We will say that memories were made! Thank the lord above (if that's your thing) for the ability to capture these memories on the camera of a phone (and have them transferred to wall murals, again, if that's your thing). Stewart was also right about the folks here. GOOD PEOPLE all around! Counting the days to our come back tour!!

Perfect Experience

  • 5 of 5

Pictures will never do this place justice…Cape Breton is breath-taking and TumbleSea was the PERFECT place to stay while we explored the island. The attention to detail and the amenities in our cottage ensured our comfort, and our host, Stewart went above and beyond to make our stay truly memorable. We can’t wait to return for more hiking, beach sunsets, seafood, music, local crafts, and hospitality. We have traveled to many places around the world and this tops any that we have visited…both Cape Breton and our accommodations surpassed all of our expectations.

Perfect cottage, incredible setting. The cottage itself was everything we hoped for - beautiful inside and out, private, unbelievable views, comfortable, fully stocked kitchen, wonderful artwork, and spotless. It's right on a bluff over the water with views up and down the coast and across to Sea Wolf island. Stewart and Bell are wonderful hosts - Stewart sat down with us the first evening and gave us detailed recommendations on hikes, beaches, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. All were hits. Our favorites hikes in or north of the park were White Point, Skyline, Bog, and MacIntosh Brook (waterfall); and Egypt Falls and the boardwalk/beach at Invernish (both south of the park and cottage). We especially enjoyed coffee/breakfast/lunch/desserts at Dancing Goat in Margaree and Down Street cafe in Inverness (good coffee is scarce so don't miss them). The cottage was so wonderful we ended up making many of our meals just so we could eat on the deck (you won't find a better deck anywhere). We spent a lot of time just watching the constantly changing water. Visit Bell's Cape Breton Clay for high quality pottery/art and Two Macs for arts & crafts. Red Shoe Pub was our favorite for live music (and good food), and the Barn was fun (the people of Cape Breton must be the friendliest people anywhere).

And I'll never forget getting up in the middle of the night each night just to go out and sit on the deck to view the millions of stars - and the Milky Way - while listening to the crashing waves. It just doesn't get any better.

This marks our second year of renting with Stewart and Bell. Tumble Sea is simply magical. Floating high in this magical cottage. The cottage is extremely clean and well appointed. Has everything you need and not cluttered with things you don't. Views are stunning. We loved looking out over Sea Wolf Island and eagles passed by almost every day of our 2 week stay! We can't wait to return. Stewart and Bell are very helpful in every way and have poured a lot of love into all their cottages. Lorraine and Ted

Unspoiled beauty

  • 5 of 5

Breathtaking view of Gulf of St Lawrence with gorgeous sunsets. In its simplicity the cottage is comfortable and attractive. Everything needed is supplied, just bring your groceries. Very quiet, private spot in Chimney corner but it is nice to know the are two other cottages up the road, out of sight. The sound of the waves crashing into the rocks is hypnotic. From Chimney Corner beach 2km up the road the cottage can be seen on the edge of the cliff.the owners are very friendly and helpful with suggestions for things to see and do in . I think the best review I can give is that I hope to return next year!

Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just left this lovely was very difficult! We had a full week to enjoy all that Cape Breton has to offer and this rental was in the perfect location to see everything. Although, it is difficult to leave because the view is stunning. We watched the sun set every night on the deck with a glass of wine. The home was spotless, with a well-equipped kitchen, modern bathroom, wonderful bed and high-quality bedding. Stewart was a great help in suggesting sights and directions. I would recommend this home without hesitation. I know that we will return. Linda & Fred

About Stewart

I have been living here for more than 20 years, and Bell grew up in Cape Breton, in Margaree Valley, just 20 minutes away. We met in art school in Halifax, and after living in New York for a few years, we moved back here permanently in 1997. We have a pottery gallery in Margaree, Bell is also a painter, and I am a photographer and videomaker. We both love Cape Breton, which comes alive in June and the weather stays awesome until October. There are plenty of beautiful places to explore here, even if you have lived here for 20 years!

Stewart purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Stewart chose Chimney Corner

I built the cottage in 2015-16; there was a dramatic spot on the property with spectacular views. It is a lovely location with wild roses all around, juniper vines and fabulous unobstructed views of the ocean. The views of the ocean, Chimney Corner Beach, and Sea Wolf/Margaree Island are simply amazing. There is also all of the privacy one could want. This building is a perfect getaway for a couple, with complete privacy and solitude. There's just nothing else like this cottage in Cape Breton. There's a real sense of romance and intimacy here, a multi-level deck, which is stunning- what an incredible panorama stretching out before you! You hear the sounds of the ocean all of the time- really a soothing thing.

What makes this cottage unique

Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and the scenery on this stretch of coast is particularly striking; the mountains, dramatic plunging cliffs and ocean make a stunning combination. it can also be dramatic, with 130 kph winds at many points of the year. The ocean is warm enough for swimming in the summer, and we see some of the most dramatic sunsets anywhere, watch whales play in our front yard, and fishermen haul their lobster traps each year. Moose, eagles, deer and foxes are regulars.

You are also close to the Cabot Trail (5 minutes), the National Park (25 minutes), and other towns and villages (5-15 minutes). If you are a golfer, you are close to Cabot Links & Cliffs in Inverness, which offer one of the great and unique golf experiences in North America. Cabot Cliffs is now ranked 9th in the world (!!) and was developed by Ben Cowan-Dewar and Mike Keiser (who developed Bandon Dunes in Oregon). The acclaim for the complex so far is pretty much unanimous-from the New York Times to Golf Digest.

You can also take advantage of local restaurants, eat freshly cooked lobster or crab, and be only a short distance from one of the best hiking networks outside the Park, between Mabou and Inverness. There's also a fantastic boardwalk in Inverness, only 18 minutes away, which winds its way along the oceanfront, beach and golf course. There are also renowned crafters in the area; interesting pottery, quilting, rug hooking, and folk art can all be found locally.
