Our family spent a week at Birchwood this Summer - it was everything as described in the VRBO add...comfortable bedrooms, very functional kitchen, a nice living room with a flat screen TV (not that you will spend much time watching TV in such a beautiful place!), and a porch where you can watch the sun set from a nice rocking chair. In fact, you will spend most of your time on that porch - perfect for dinners, evening cocktails, morning coffee or just a quiet talk with your spouse. Birchwood is the perfect Maine cottage - if you want to relax from the stress of life, this place is for you.
My wife, brother, and I spent the week July 28 to August 4, 2012. Located on the water front at the end of a deadend street, the cottage was exactly as described and the photos provided an accurate indication of its assets. The cottage was very clean and well maintained. The enclosed porch overlooking the water was special. Loved the antiques and especially the pocket door to the bathroom. The antics of the ospry family on the offshore nesting platform were special, seals were seen on a periodic island, and gulls droped mussels on the shoreline rocks to break open the shells. We took walks on nearby reserves including Littlejohn Island Preserve and Mast Landing Bird Sancuary. Excellent lobsters were very inexpensive at Haraseeket Lobster Co. in South Freeport. Wonderful fresh fish was obtained from Free Range Fish and Lobster in Portalnd. Beer and burgers at Great Lost Bear Pub in Portland was terrific. Lots of good restaurants in Old Port, Portland. I would recommend this cottage to couples age 55+
Close to Portland to the south for all the arts, Old Port attractions & waterfront. To the north is Freeport with LLBeans and outlet shopping. Lots of great restaurants. Many places to walk and bike.
