About the property

2 bedroom country cottage in a beautiful setting with fantastic gardens

'The cottage is cosy with bags of rustic charm and a beautiful garden full of flowers, fruit and as much vegetables as you can eat! My boys were constantly on their bikes around the garden and up and down (the very quiet) road.' Quote from a regular guest, see reviews.

This isn't just a holiday-let, this is a home! We have carefully tried to meet all of your needs at the cottage and equipped the cottage with everything you would need for a short or long holiday, including wi-fi access for the duration of your stay. We have been renting the cottage for many years, having owned it since 1989. Each year we add something new and try to keep the cottage fresh.

You can follow the cottage on Twitter @TheCottageNews and view videos on our YouTube channel

The cottage and surrounding area is able to meet the needs of a range of holiday makers. Perfect for days relaxing and spending time at the cottage; great for shopping; lots of activities within easy distance and only 60 miles from the beautiful beaches along the coast.

In the large kitchen you will find a dishwasher, washing machine, fridge-freezer, microwave, CD/radio and iPod/Phone music dock. A large wood-burning fire provides heat when necessary and there's a good-sized table and chairs. The stable door opens onto the gardens and a patio with table, chairs and barbecue. The comfortable lounge has a wood burner set in a bread-oven, two large 3-seat sofas. A very spacious bathroom with large bathtub and huge separate shower. Two small airy comfortable loft bedrooms can be found up a beautiful, but very narrow, wrought 'iron spiral staircase. There is a king-sized bed in one room, a double floor bed and one single pine bed in the other bedroom.

Why The Owner chose Mayenne

It's a great place to unwind for families, couples and friends.

Quiet location but within easy reach of shops and places to explore.

What makes this cottage unique

The location of the cottage was the first thing we fell in love with. we loved the beams in the house and the thickness of the walls!

The gardens are a totally unique benefit of the cottage and they add so much to staying at the cottage, the colours, the greenery and all the wildlife that they attract.

Quaint and more than comfortable.

The song Love Shack by the B52s was an anthem for the cottage and we have always talked about putting out a sign - 15 miles to the Love Shack! A friend Iain made us a great sign, which we proudly erected recently, see photos.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We landed at the house on Saturday afternoon to be greeted by a riot of colours and shapes in your most beautiful garden. It is not an exaggeration to say we have paid money to see lesser areas. It is a pleasure to wake up to. We have met Didier and I wanted to ask if it was still okay to pick a few of the copious amount of "legumes" growing in what I can only describe as a market garden! We set the pool up yesterday and the children are really enjoying it. I just wanted to let you know your property and garden look every bit as they should on this magical August morning. Beautiful relaxing holiday in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd holiday at the Cottage and it definitely wont be the last. If you are looking for a relaxing time in a beautiful location then I would highly recommend booking Karen's cottage. The Cottage itself is clean, comfortable, beautiful with all the facilities you could ask for. Everything about the Cottage is everything I would want in a holiday home for me and my family. The grounds are stunning and kept my children entertained day in, day out. We didn't go out much as the cottage and sunshine was enough for us, but if you did want to go out there are plenty of things to do. Plus there is a huge supermarket a small drive away that caters for everything you might need. We have fond memories of our holiday's here and cannot wait to make more memories soon.

Lovely cottage and garden in quiet rural setting

  • 5 of 5

We loved the beautiful cottage and amazing garden. Situated at the end of a lane, it was very peaceful and surrounded by fields. The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable. Although it was away from it all there are towns and villages within a short drive. We love St Hilaire market on Wednesday. The owner of the cottage, Karen, is a lovely lady who is very friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend it and can't wait to visit again in the summer.

A blissful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely, peaceful and relaxing few days at Karen's wonderful cottage in May. The beautiful garden is the first thing that greats you as you arrive (think The Secret Garden/Swallows and Amazons); the next is the peace and quiet! The cottage is well equipped and comfortable (even before the kitchen upgrade) and really feels like a home from home. The nearest town is a short drive away, with a substantial supermarket for stocking up on everything needed to enjoy lunches/dinners/drinks/relaxing in the garden. We found plenty of places to visit in the area come rain or shine, and we literally didn't want to leave. A really magical place to stay, for individuals, couples or families - it doesn't matter!

Bliss at the end of a lane.

  • 5 of 5

I have been to the cottage several times, both in the summer and winter and have never been disappointed. I have been there with lots of children on occasions and was grateful for the thoughtful provision of play equipent, particularly the inflatable pool.

The grounds are always fabulous, always full of colour and have the moist secret places for a spot of isolated sun bathing. Each day there is a bountiful supply of produce from the gardens, its true what they say on those cookery programmes, from the garden to the pot in minutes is a whole new taste.

I have explored the area and my favourites are the waterfalls at Mourtan and the lakeside activities at Messanger. (Incorrect spelling, I fear.) This area of France has fabulous shopping experiences, dont miss the local market in Herce.

Great for the whole family or solitude, wonderful for midnight games with the teenagers, no neighbours to disturb. Enjoy your time, if you choose to book. Highly recommended.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from another fabulous stay in this cottage near Gorron. The cottage is cosy with bags of rustic charm and a beautiful garden full of flowers, fruit and as much vegetables as you can eat! My boys were constantly on their bikes around the garden and up and down (the very quiet) road. Nearby acitivies include pitch and putt, great cycle rides and tree climbing with ropes and wires. There is a pool 5 minutes down the road and we love riding up to the top of the road to get fresh bread everyday. Would have stayed all summer if we could!! Thanks again for a great holiday and a home away from home ( with better weather and stunning garden) ! Maddies and family

Hercé – a very small village but with Gorron only 3km it has a range of shops, bars and restaurants. There's a swimming pool, which pulls back its' roof in the summer, tennis courts and a pony club.

The beautiful beaches aren't too far either. Along the coast of Normandy and Brittany. One of my favourite days - is a morning shopping in the walled city of St Malo, only 60 miles from the cottage - lunch in a pavement café and then an afternoon on the beach. To end the day a drive along the coastal road to the beautiful island city of Mont St Michel, spectacular at twilight and less crowded!! There are opportunities close-by for windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, archery and mini-golf at Ambrierés-La-Vallees.

Various ferry options to the cottage:

Brittany Ferries Portsmouth/Caen - 80 miles to cottage.

LD Lines Portsmouth/Le Havre - LD Lines - 130 miles (Cheaper!)

Can go via Calais but a long drive.
