Beautifully restored colonial home, 4 bedroom, 5 bath, amazing location
This colonial era, spacious 4 bedroom home is located in the town center, originally across the river (now covered) from the town center. The location is inside the UNESCO World Heritage zone, just a few blocks from the Plaza de la Paz, Teatro Juarez, plazas Los Angeles and San Fernando. Theaters, restaurants, museums, shopping and ATMs are within easy walking distance. No long uphill treks or taxi rides to get to and from the action in this amazing town.
The home features the high wood beamed ceilings and 3' thick stone walls typical of 18th century construction, updated with modern comforts. All materials used in the renovation were hand made and sourced locally, the tile, stone and wood bring the essence of colonial Mexico into the apartment. The house is a short walk up from Alonso, a local taxi can take you via "Cerro de Gallo" to within about 30 feet of the door. Visitors will appreciate ability to walk to the main plazas and attractions.
The house features a classic design, with bedrooms located around central patios, and a large and relaxing roof garden with patios on the roof. The master bedroom has a king sized bed, study area, attached bath. There are two suites, the Boveda suite has a king sized bed, with an study/private dining area with a boveda style ceiling, a sofa bed, and attached bath. The Buena Vista suite features a king bed separable to two single beds if required, a lovely sitting room with a pull out sofa, and an attached bath. The 4th bedroom has a full sized bed, with a recliner couch attached bath, it also the location of the only TV set in the house.
The house was renovated over a five year period finishing up in 2010. Using local artisans and materials, the house is beautiful, comfortable, and full of interesting details. The garden on the roof is the major departure from the local architecture, blending elements to create a series of fascinating garden 'rooms' to socialize, read, relax, and enjoy the spectacular views and sunsets.

About Steven Haskett
I'm a software engineer who was born in Texas, but lived on 3 continents before settling back in the US. I split my time between Mexico and Austin. I love learning and sharing the history of my adopted home town. I've made the trip from Austin to Guanajuato just about every way imaginable, from the 'cheap' bus to piloting our small private plane. I'm happy to share what I've learned about living and travelling in Mexico.
Steven Haskett purchased this House in 2005
Why Steven Haskett chose Zona Centro
We had three criteria when we were looking for this property. Mexican colonial silver city, close to downtown, and access to modern communications and infrastructure. We were able to find all of this and more in this property. We traveled throughout central Mexico, but we kept coming back to Guanajuato. A true walking town, it condenses everything you could need into a compact city center.
What makes this House unique
We were looking for a home in one of Mexico's colonial cities. I love the European feel, and the uniqueness of a walking town, where everything you need from the corner produce shop to the symphony are within a 10 minute walk. A place where music comes to you. A place where you meet and chat (en Español) with neighbors and local shopkeepers as you see them daily as you walk to and from the apartment. Given the elevation of Guanajuato (6600'), the location near the level of the main plazas and attractions make it an easy to walk to and from the house compared to most other locations. Your enjoyment of the town is based on how easy it is to get to the attractions, restaurants and nightlife, and this home puts you in a great place to make the most out of your trip.

The property is extremely large. Bedrooms are spacious and beds comfortable. The rest of house is beautifully decorated with all comforts of home. Washer & dryer available on roof. I would have given 5 stars but lady overseeing property, Juanita, was somewhat rude to us. We were not informed a separate guest renting lower level single apartment also has access to property and uses same laundry facilities. She left me a note upset because we used other tenant’s soap while we were not informed which soap to use. Also, her she gave conflicting instructions on locking & unlocking main door to house then threatened to take keys from us to avoid jamming door. I speak Spanish so communication was not the issue. Stephen, owner, is very gracious & was available by text, phone, or email if we had any concerns. House is beautiful & I look forward to returning to Guanajuato & hopefully renting this property again. Thanks Stephen for being such a gracious host.
Wonderful stay with extended family
Our family had a fantastic stay in this beautiful home. We enjoyed every inch of the house from the elegant dining room and living room, to the sprawling rooftop patio with magnificent views over Guanajuato. The location is perfect, tucked away in a small street yet a 6-7 minute walk to the Jardin. We cooked in the well equipped kitchen and also enjoyed two wonderful dinners prepared by Juanita, the kind and attentive housekeeper. We will return!
Incredible home in incredible location
I love this house! It is comfortable and beautiful. The rooftop offers an amazing view of the city. Everything is walkable from the house. Juanita is very kind and helpful. Steven is quick to respond and let me check in early. Would definitely stay here again.
Was our first time in Guanajuato and couldn't be happier with our choice to stay at this perfect gorgeous home, as we walked in for the first time I think our jaws literally dropped by it's beauty! Thank you Steven for making our stay a joyous and comfortable one, the location to all festivities and eateries was just footsteps away. I am in love with Guanajuato and hope to return real soon! Gracias!
Right from the start this was an incredible experience. Steven is so helpful and responsive! Guanajuato is so beautiful and this property is in a perfect location! The roof top terrace is beyond words and each room in the home is extremely comfortable and top notch. If you are going to visit Guanajuato this is the only place you need to book! Giving it 5 stars isn't enough!
All around amazing experience!
I LOVED this place, not only the city itself but this house! Staying at this house is the perfect way to really enjoy Guanajuato and "feel" the place. The location is ideal as you can walk to all the major attractions within the city. The bonus for me (it might be a bit noisy for some) was how the callenjoneados (minstrel singers) passed right by the house nightly (every 15-30 minutes) singing and playing music. You gotta love a city and culture that has folks singing in the streets every night!
Not only is the house ideally located it's a sanctuary as you enter with its spaciousness and beautiful tile , fountains and decorative details! The roof top terrace was what attracted me to the house and it did NOT disappoint! We thoroughly enjoyed it every evening. It was the ideal place to sit and watch the sun set while sipping a cocktail, listening to the street singers and watching the lights slowly illuminate the city. It was also a great place for morning coffee.
We enjoyed two catered meals by Juanita and her friends, one for breakfast of chilaquiles and another for dinner (after a long day touring the surrounding towns) of tortilla soup, roasted chicken, veggies and pie! Both were less expensive than the 7 of us going out to a restaurant for a meal.
I highly recommend visiting this unique city AND staying at this beautiful home. Thanks so much for sharing your family home in this lovely city with us Steven!
This is a great city for concerts, chamber music, art and history. Troubadours roam the alleyways, check the posters at the Plaza de la Paz and the Jardin de la Reunion for performance schedules. You'll want to see a performance in the spectacular Teatro Juarez. I saw the Chicago Symphony perform there in 2012 during the Cervantino Festival which occurs each October. This property puts you just a few minutes walk away from the town's best attractions. Located just over a block up from one of the main streets, there are no long hikes up the hills to reach your residence - nothing to keep you from running out for coffee in the morning, or stopping for a rest from your sightseeing midday. My favorite places close by are the Plaza San Fernando, a great plaza surrounded by sidewalk restaurants, the Plaza de la Paz, the location of the basilica and the focus for parades and city activities, and the Jardin de la Reunion, the focus point for meeting friends old and new. All of these are just a few minutes walk from the front door.
