Overview

About the property

Beautifully restored colonial home, 4 bedroom, 5 bath, amazing location

This colonial era apartment is part of the larger House in Guanajuato (available for larger parties, please ask) but has its own private entrance. The location is inside the UNESCO World Heritage zone, just a few blocks from the Plaza de la Paz, Teatro Juarez, plazas Los Angeles and San Fernando. Theaters, restaurants, museums, shopping and ATMs are within easy walking distance.

The home features the high wood beamed ceilings and 3' thick stone walls typical of 18th century construction, updated with modern comforts. All materials used in the renovation were hand made and sourced locally, the tile, stone and wood bring the essence of colonial Mexico into the apartment. The house is a short walk up from Alonso, a local taxi can take you via "Cerro de Gallo" to within about 30 feet of the door. Visitors will appreciate ability to walk to the main plazas and attractions.

The house features a classic design, with bedrooms located around central patios, and a large and relaxing roof garden with patios on the roof. The master bedroom has a king sized bed, study area, attached bath. There are two suites, the Boveda suite has a king sized bed, with an study/private dining area with a boveda style ceiling, a sofa bed, and attached bath. The Buena Vista suite features a king bed separable to two single beds if required, a lovely sitting room with a pull out sofa, and an attached bath. The 4th bedroom has a full sized bed, with a recliner couch attached bath, it also the location of the only TV set in the house.

The house was renovated over a five year period finishing up in 2010. Using local artisans and materials, the house is beautiful, comfortable, and full of interesting details. The garden on the roof is the major departure from the local architecture, blending elements to create a series of fascinating 'rooms' to socialize, read, relax, and enjoy the spectacular views and sunsets.

About Steven Haskett

I'm a software engineer who was born in Texas, but lived on 3 continents before settling back in the US. I split my time between Mexico and Austin. I love learning and sharing the history of my adopted home town. I've made the trip from Austin to Guanajuato just about every way imaginable, from the 'cheap' bus to piloting our small private plane. I'm happy to share what I've learned about living and travelling in Mexico.

Steven Haskett purchased this house in 2005

Why Steven Haskett chose Guanajuato

We had three criteria when we were looking for this property. Mexican colonial silver city, close to downtown, and access to modern communications and infrastructure. We were able to find all of this and more in this property. We traveled throughout central Mexico, but we kept coming back to Guanajuato. A true walking town, it condenses everything you could need into a compact city center.

What makes this house unique

We were looking for a home in one of Mexico's colonial cities. I love the European feel, and the uniqueness of a walking town, where everything you need from the corner produce shop to the symphony are within a 10 minute walk. A place where music comes to you. A place where you meet and chat (en Español) with neighbors and local shopkeepers as you see them daily as you walk to and from the apartment.

All around amazing experience!

  • 5 of 5

I LOVED this place, not only the city itself but this house! Staying at this house is the perfect way to really enjoy Guanajuato and "feel" the place. The location is ideal as you can walk to all the major attractions within the city. The bonus for me (it might be a bit noisy for some) was how the callenjoneados (minstrel singers) passed right by the house nightly (every 15-30 minutes) singing and playing music. You gotta love a city and culture that has folks singing in the streets every night!

Not only is the house ideally located it's a sanctuary as you enter with its spaciousness and beautiful tile , fountains and decorative details! The roof top terrace was what attracted me to the house and it did NOT disappoint! We thoroughly enjoyed it every evening. It was the ideal place to sit and watch the sun set while sipping a cocktail, listening to the street singers and watching the lights slowly illuminate the city. It was also a great place for morning coffee.

We enjoyed two catered meals by Juanita and her friends, one for breakfast of chilaquiles and another for dinner (after a long day touring the surrounding towns) of tortilla soup, roasted chicken, veggies and pie! Both were less expensive than the 7 of us going out to a restaurant for a meal.

I highly recommend visiting this unique city AND staying at this beautiful home. Thanks so much for sharing your family home in this lovely city with us Steven!

Colonial Beauty in Guanajuato

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a place to stay in Guanajuato, look no further. This home is magnificent and conveniently located. My family of eight spent a memorable week here and we had every convenience at our disposal. The decor is beyond descripion, the bedrooms spacious and comfortable, the living and dining areas inviting. You will love the rooftop garden where I am sure you will want to spend time enjoying the view of this beautiful city. Mr. Steven Haskett is a gracious and accomodating owner. He will respond promptly when you contact him.

The House in Guanajuato (La Casa en Guanajuato)

  • 5 of 5

I made a reservation to stay at the Don Quijote apartment several months ago, for a week's stay in early December of this year. The owner of the property, Steven Haskett, was prompt in responding to my messages. Out of excitement for my upcoming trip, I showed several of my friends on-line photos of the Don Quijote apartment which had been renovated, showing its colonial-era architecture. Two of my very good friends (mother and daughter) wanted to come with me to Guanajuato. I emailed Steven again, and I was able to reserve a suite for them upstairs in the main house which is attached to the Don Quijote apartment, although both residences have their own entrance. The main house is referred to as The House in Guanajuato (La Casa en Guanajuato). With more tweeking to our reservations, my two friends and I would be staying in two of the suites in the House in Guanajuato, which meant that we would share the kitchen, dining room, living room, patio and upstairs terrace of the main house. I stayed in the Boveda Suite, and my friend and her daughter stayed in the Master Bedroom, also referred to as "El Grande" room. The House in Guanajuato was also renovated into its original colonial-era architecture and design. In awe over the beautiful tilework, floors and colonial design, as well as the open-air interior patio and drop-dead gorgeous kitchen, diningroom, livingroom and the suites we stayed in, we did not want to leave the property!! We fell in love with the upstairs terrace, with the raised garden and beautiful tilework, where we went almost every evening to sit, relax, have some drinks and snacks, and look at the outstanding view of the University of Guanajuato, the Cathedral, and the colorful houses and rooftops. From this amazing terrace, we were fortunate to have a peek below at the Estudiantina of Guanajuato (The Troubadors) that passed by our street most evenings, singing and playing their music. Each morning, we went back upstairs to have coffee and breakfast on the terrace, where it was sunny and warm, and this was last week, from December 1st through the 6th.

Juanita, the housekeeper, was wonderful! The House is absolutely immaculate! Anytime we needed anything, Juanita made sure that we had it. Her husband, Jose, was our taxi driver, who picked us up from the airport, and drove us back to the airport when we departed. One day, I'll reserve the Don Quijote apartment, but I must say that I absolutely loved the Boveda Suite!

This is a great city for concerts, chamber music, art and history. Troubadours roam the alleyways, check the posters at the Plaza de la Paz and the Jardin de la Reunion for performance schedules. You'll want to see a performance in the spectacular Teatro Juarez. I saw the Chicago Symphony perform there in 2012 during the Cervantino Festival which occurs each October.
