Beautifully restored colonial home, 4 bedroom, 5 bath, amazing location
About Steven Haskett
I'm a software engineer who was born in Texas, but lived on 3 continents before settling back in the US. I split my time between Mexico and Austin. I love learning and sharing the history of my adopted home town. I've made the trip from Austin to Guanajuato just about every way imaginable, from the 'cheap' bus to piloting our small private plane. I'm happy to share what I've learned about living and travelling in Mexico.
Steven Haskett purchased this House in 2005
Why Steven Haskett chose Zona Centro
We had three criteria when we were looking for this property. Mexican colonial silver city, close to downtown, and access to modern communications and infrastructure. We were able to find all of this and more in this property. We traveled throughout central Mexico, but we kept coming back to Guanajuato. A true walking town, it condenses everything you could need into a compact city center.
What makes this House unique
We were looking for a home in one of Mexico's colonial cities. I love the European feel, and the uniqueness of a walking town, where everything you need from the corner produce shop to the symphony are within a 10 minute walk. A place where music comes to you. A place where you meet and chat (en Español) with neighbors and local shopkeepers as you see them daily as you walk to and from the apartment. Given the elevation of Guanajuato (6600'), the location near the level of the main plazas and attractions make it an easy to walk to and from the house compared to most other locations. Your enjoyment of the town is based on how easy it is to get to the attractions, restaurants and nightlife, and this home puts you in a great place to make the most out of your trip.

Wonderful Stay in a Perfect House
Great location and we enjoyed it all. Perfect for our reunion group of 4 couples.
Beautiful and comfortable home close to everything
We thoroughly enjoyed our one month stay in Steven's beautiful home. We rented the house for a family visit and our stay was very enjoyable. Our whole family stayed with us and were very impressed with the large, beautiful, well decorated space.
The home is comfortable and clean and is completely stocked with everything. It felt like home. Hot water, towels, kitchen utensils, its all there.
On site managers Juanita and Jose were very attentive and just like family, always ready to help when we needed them. If you come down to stay here be sure and take Steven up on his offer to have Jose pick you up at the airport. He delivers you to your doorstep. The streets are a little tricky to navigate if it is your first time, especially if you arrive at night. We were grateful for Jose's assistance.
We enjoyed the beautiful terrace and its commanding view of the city, especially at night. The estudiantinos performed outside for us nightly and it was very entertaining.
Communication with Steven was excellent, we didn't have to worry about anything but having a good time.
This house is located within walking distance from the zona central and its shopping, dining, museums and attractions. On a safe and quiet street with no traffic.
We highly recommend this property and we can't say enough nice things about it. We will definitely be back.
Thank you Steven.
Home away from Home in Guanajauto
This house has everything you need for an extended stay. The location is great and the center of town is a 5 min. walk. This is the second time we have rented this property, and we will be back soon!
Gorgeous house in Guanajuanto Centro!
We ABSOLUTELY loved our stay in 26 Barranca! We stayed in the Buena Vista suite on the top floor of the house. We had a fantastic view from every window and had access to 3 beautiful places outdoors on the rooptop terrace to enjoy the vista and cool breezes. Our suite was well equipped with a lovely sitting room, large bedroom and large ensuite bathroom with tub & shower. The house is beautifully kept and sparkling clean. We definitively will return in the future to this wonderful home away from home! Priscilla and Joe Sulham, Bellingham, WA, USA
The Buena Vista suite is our guest favorite. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely and spacious place to stay
An absolutely beautiful, very spacious, and well located colonial home. In many VRBO and other stays, I have never encountered such a well supplied kitchen. We had a propane issue during our stay, which was efficiently handled by Juanita. Wifi did work well in the front rooms, but was problematic in the rear rooms or on the rooftop terraces.
Electricity was Cut Off during our stay
I don't know about other people's experiences, I can only comment about my own.
My family rented this beautiful house for 14 days and, on the 9th day, a man from the local electricity company came to the house, told us that the owner was not paying the bill, and then cut off the electricity. The owner initially assured us that the electricity company would restore power very soon, but after about 24 hours, the owner told us that the electricity company payment records were wrong and that they would not be restoring power.
I was very upset and I told the owner that I would write a bad review and file a lawsuit. The owner responded by text that he "couldn't care less." The owner should have paid the electricity company and worried about the payment records later. Instead, the owner left us scrambling for a hotel at the last minute because he "couldn't care less."
On rare occasions things will happen that are completely beyond our control, and CFE cutting power to the property is one of those things (and as I tried to explain, it was an internal CFE issue - we pay our bills!)
As I would for any guest of mine, I kept the guest apprised of the situation, offered to pay for a hotel the first night (they opted to stay in the property) and then when it was obvious we were not going to be able to resolve the power issue, we worked to find alternates accommodations through HomeAway/VRBO support, my researched hotel recommendations, and of course made a prompt refund.
The issue with CFE was resolved the next week.
For those of you who know me and find the quote in the review unlikely, my full quote was "I could care less -about your threats-". Intimidation isn't required (or appreciated) for me to do my best to care for my guests!
This is a great city for concerts, chamber music, art and history. Troubadours roam the alleyways, check the posters at the Plaza de la Paz and the Jardin de la Reunion for performance schedules. You'll want to see a performance in the spectacular Teatro Juarez. I saw the Chicago Symphony perform there in 2012 during the Cervantino Festival which occurs each October.
This property puts you just a few minutes walk away from the town's best attractions. Located just over a block up from one of the main streets, there are no long hikes up the hills to reach your residence - nothing to keep you from running out for coffee in the morning, or stopping for a rest from your sightseeing midday.
My favorite places close by are the Plaza San Fernando, a great plaza surrounded by sidewalk restaurants, the Plaza de la Paz, the location of the basilica and the focus for parades and city activities, and the Jardin de la Reunion, the focus point for meeting friends old and new. All of these are just a few minutes walk from the front door.
