About Janet McDonald
We are a family of artists with a small child, and have enjoyed the most special holidays here. Whether on holiday with friends, as an artists' retreat, or spending precious time with extended family, this home has been the hub of so many special memories for us. This is our toddler's home away from home and the surrounding natural beauty of the location is the best and most adventurous backyard you could dream of. We love to come here to do creative work because it is impossible in this environment not to be inspired.

Everything we wanted and more. The location was excellent. The staff was excellent. The house, pool, and grounds -- all excellent. The only thing we would have changed is the length of our stay. We should have really stayed a full week instead if the 3 days. For our next visits to Jamaica, we will make a point to always seek this place out. Kids were in the pool every morning with their grandparents; the food was always superb -- the chef can really cook; we had a car and could get anywhere worth going inside of 20 mins. Just a lovely set up.
Amazing house and staff (with helpful info) Too bad wifi was down the whole week :(
We just came back from this magnificent vacation and can say that this was by far the most relaxing vacation we ever had! The villa is nestled at the top of a hill in the rain forest in a non touristic area. You can hear the wind and the birds, and almost nothing else! When we arrived, I said: "Wow! This looks like a hotel except the hotel is only for us!" The staff, (Chef, waiter and house lady) are the kindest, most devoted people! We absolutely adored them and hugged them as we left. Chef Warren made such delicious meals that we never ate anywhere else! They all made our daughter's 18th birthday absolutely memorable! They did everything, all the time, without us noticing...
Now, I think it would be helpful for people reading this review to understand that the house is located at about a 3 hour drive from the Kingston airport. I am SO grateful that the manager of the house recommended using a driver! The roads are VERY rough (especially through the mountains), no signs, GPS wasn't working in the mountains and let's say that the Jamaican driving is...adventurous!! So yes, please, use the driver to go back and forth to the airport (US$150 each way for the 4 of us). Once you arrived at the house, and if all you need is to relax and been taken care of, you are all set. However if you want to go to the beach or snorkel, that is not a good location for you. First of all, there are no beaches close. Every time you want to go anywhere, you will have to use a cab. Second of all, there are no free /public beaches close. We ended up going to the private beach (Frenchman's Cove) and it was worth the taxi ride and the $10 pp to enter the beach. It was gorgeous/very natural however with huge waves and not suitable for snorkeling. The Blue Lagoon down the hill is beautiful but full of merchants who want you to buy stuff with nowhere to leave your bag/clothes if you make it to the water...and don't bother taking the boat rides along the shore. Uneventful...Finally, we had to pay for the food chef Warren cooked, which was totally normal but we just didn't expect the food to be as expensive as in NYC! We spent about $800 for the week for 4. However this was money well spent and we do not regret it one bit! In conclusion, if your goal is to relax in beautiful surroundings and eat delicious food, you will love this place! We did and we are absolutely relaxed. But I wish someone had told us more about what to expect AROUND it so we could have been better prepared
Gorgeous villa in the lush Jamaican jungle of Portland
The house was amazing in terms of decor, spaciousness, location and view, at the top of a hill overlooking the ocean. It is near beautiful beaches and the Blue Lagoon. We also enjoyed a day trip to Reach Falls. Janet and the team at the house including Doreen, Lance and Chef Warren took such good care of us. Janet and Doreen were so kind to help me take my son to the hospital when he fell ill one evening. We loved the house and had the best time. We highly recommend it to all and hope to be back sometime soon!
Beautiful slice of paradise
As if the beautiful peaceful serene surroundings were not enough, the house is clean, comfortable, and a perfect venue to relax. On top of that you have Lance, Doreen and Chef Warren who seem to move around in the background attendjng to your every need. We created some great memories with friends and are already considering when we can make it back! Loved EVERY minute. Thank you to the amazing staff. We will definately be back.
Everything about our stay surpassed our expectations! We can't wait to come back!
First, the location was incredible. The villa is secluded in a quiet rainforest area and is absolutely gorgeous. It's also very close to several activities like rafting the Rio Grande and taking a swim at the Blue Lagoon or a few different beaches. The pictures do not do the villa justice! The decor and atmosphere are breathtaking. The team that works at the Villa is phenomenal. They made sure we ate amazing food, helped with arrangements for visiting attractions, and made us feel comfortable and relaxed at all times. The team even prepared a special dinner date for my husband and I one evening after the kids went to sleep! We fell in love with this place and truly enjoyed every moment. We will be back soon!
Portland, with its capital town Port Antonio, is a parish located on Jamaica's northeast coast. It is one of the rural areas of Jamaica and is known for its great beaches. It extends from the highest peaks of the Blue Mountains, down to the north coast, and is noted for its fertile soil, beautiful scenery, and fine beaches. The parish lies in the direct path of the northeast trade winds, and the Blue Mountain ridge to its south traps the moisture causing the parish to have the highest rainfall in the island. It is noted for fine beaches, such as Frenchman's Cove, Boston Beach, Winifred, and Dragon Bay. The very famous Blue Mountains are also located in Portland, as is the world-famous Blue Lagoon, which is believed to be the crater of an extinct volcano. The lagoon is an almost landlocked cove with approximately 55m (180 ft) of water. Rafting on the Rio Grande is also a tourist attraction.
Boston Bay in Portland is an area well known for its famous "jerked" foods, including chicken, fish and pork. It is a fun spot where locals surf and skateboard.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing getaway or nights on the town, Port Antonio is a great destination. There are very few tourists relative to other Jamaican vacation destinations. The small town of Port Antonio hosts music concerts, culinary festivals, and sound system dance parties, while nearby luxury hotels such as Geejam and the Trident offer fine dining, spa treatments, and the like.
