About Karlette Johnson

When we received to opportunity to purchase a cabin near beautiful Bear Lake, we couldn't sign the papers fast enough. Not just because it was a gorgeous vacation home, but because it would provide so many wonderful opportunities for our family of seven to get away, spend precious time together, and create lasting memories with our fast-growing children. It is so important to take time out for yourself and for your family every now and then which is why we decided to share our mountain gem with others. If you decide to hide away in our 'Cubby Hole', you'll easily see why it's one of our first choices for a get-away! Breath-taking views, rejuvenating mountain air, and 5-minute access to small town atmosphere. . . for these reasons and many more, it will be your first choice for a home-away-from-home.

Wonderful Family Friendly Place

  • 5 of 5

The Cubby Hole was perfect for our small family reunion at Bear Lake. We were delighted by all of the unexpected bonuses that made it fun to be there. Some examples: the "toy room," complete with foosball table, train table, and video games setup; lots of additional children's toys under the stairs; grill, hot tub, deck, porch swing; large DVD library; multiple living room seating areas; washer/dryer; and my personal favorite: the very well-stocked kitchen. Have you ever tried to cook without the right tools?

Everything was clean and well-maintained. The property manager was easy to reach and very helpful.

The view of Bear Lake was gorgeous. We were a quick 5-7 minute drive down to Garden City, with its justifiably famous raspberry shakes and water sports. On our last day there, we tried out the Go-kart facility down the hill. It was a great experience. We would totally recommend the Cubby Hole as a great place to stay.

It was clean and had a beautiful view of the Lake. The amenities we good.

  • 4 of 5

The property was pretty much as advertised. There was a fire pit like we were told but it was overgrown and we had to mow down the weeds and clean around it to be able to use it. We found quite a few spiders and silverfish, or earwigs, around the home. Not sure if it was due to the missing drywall in the basement while undergoing repairs for a water leak, but one person found two silverfish on his toothbrush one morning. Not too appetizing. The cleaning instructions were not really clear. Not sure if we were to sweep, mop and vacuum plus clean bathrooms, etc.

Found out 10 days after checkout that there was a towel missing and a stain on the downstairs bathroom vanity. So they are still deciding about return of the cleaning deposit and that is after I sent an email requesting information on my deposit. Overall, the property was very nice and we had a great time. We enjoyed spending time at the lake, we recommend the North Beach. The cost for all day is $5 where the cost at Rondevous Beach was $10. We went and toured the Minnetonka cave which was amazing. There are quite a few stairs, but it was worth it to see the amazing beauty of the cave. Had a great dinner at the Mexican restaurant, can't remember the name, but it was quite nice and the food was fantastic. We found that the shakes at Jakes were the best. They are actually made with hard ice cream which we felt makes them better.

Owner's Response: In virtually all cases, guests who write negative comments on our cabin do so because they were charged for damage they caused to the cabin and they want to "get back" at us. This is the case with this review. We spent hours trying to remove a black stain on the bathroom counter top that was impossible to clean and we had to replace the entire vanity top. She also switched a matching cabin towel with one of her own but was unwilling to return the towel she took by mistake. Once this guests was told it would effect her deposit, she wrote the review. We don't advertise a fire pit. She asked if one was available and I told her there was one but it was not often used because many summers there are fire restrictions. However, since this summer there weren't restrictions, she was told she was welcome to use it, but this is not an amenity we list or maintain. In regards to the silver fish, in the 5 years of cleaning this cabin, we have never seen a silver fish there, so this is odd indeed. Perhaps it came with her. The check-out instructions are signed at the time of the reservation, emailed before arrival, and posted on the fridge and they are quite clear. None of the things she mentioned are required. We only ask that towels are washed & dried, sheets are started, trash hauled to a nearby dumpster, and amenity items put away. The security deposit is 100% refundable unless there is damage or excessive cleaning required.

roomier than expected and great view

  • 5 of 5

Very spacious living spaces. Some of the bedrooms are a little small. Beautiful view of the lake from the back deck. Lots of games and toys available for the kids. You can hear traffic from the highway as it is just off of it, but only noticeable at night. Overall a great place to stay.

Comforts of cabin made for a great stay

  • 4 of 5

I have to say that the pictures posted online don't do this cabin justice, it's larger than it looks and much nicer. The owners have thought of everything a large family would need on vacation. The grandchildren loved the game room, the Xbox, foose ball table and selection of toys was a hit. We loved sitting on the deck in the evening and watching the deer, wild turkey and other wild life. They even had a nice selection of DVDs and blue ray movies to watch. Our only complaint would be the upstairs rooms are very warm, the air conditioner struggles to keep the main floor cool and barely touches the heat upstairs. From other reviews we read we took plenty of fans, but it was still very warm. Too bad when the owners remodeled they didn't put in an additional air conditioner for the upstairs. That said, it was a wonderful time with our family and would most likely stay there again

Bear Lake Cubby Hole Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Our family stay at the Cubby Hole cabin was perfect for a large family with kids. It was clean and roomy. Well stocked kitchen with most everything we needed for cooking, cleaning and storing of food. Very kid friendly. Had lots of choices of things to do at the cabin. We played games indoors and out. Watched movies. Enjoyed the beautiful view of Bear Lake. One of our highlights was watching a moose appear at the base of the mountain in front of us. He lingered for quite sometime. My grandchildren loved it! We'll have wonderful memories of our vacation there.

Beautiful Views from a Cozy Cabin

  • 4 of 5

Our group of 5 really enjoyed this cabin! We came for the Bear Lake marathon series and found the cabin to be a great location between Idaho, Utah and Wyoming. The beds were comfortable and the cabin had all the amenities we needed. Our complaints are that the upstairs got very hot, even with the AC on. We also didn't like that we had to wash and dry all our sheets and towels before we had to leave at 6am. We have rented several properties from VRBO before and have never had to do that. Overall, I'd recommend this cabin for a large group wanting to enjoy Bear Lake or doing the marathon series.

Owner's Response: We love having guests stay during the Bear Lake marathon and also the 100-mile classic. The Cubby Hole is a large 3-story cabin, but the central air conditioning works well (it's s only 4 years old) and is usually adequate to keep the house cool. Once the evenings cool down we recommend opening the windows to enjoy the gentle Bear Lake breeze that usually accompanies most nights. With regards to the laundry, this guest was told she only needed to start 1 load of sheets in the dryer she must have misunderstood. We ask guests to wash & dry the towels and start a load of sheets to keep cleaning costs as low as possible. This is outlined in the time share agreement, so there are not surprises. Most guests find they can accomplish this while they are packing up their things.
