House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible Bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-5)
Our home on Windmill Beach is truly a sanctuary in that special Lake Michigan environment where you have the beach and shoreline as well as woods and wildlife. Yet it is easily accessible from I-43 and there are many things to do and see in the area.
As you drive down the tree-covered private road that leads to the lake, you immediately breath easier. At the bottom of the road is a sprawling beach with Lake Michigan waves as the backdrop. This beautiful sandy beach is shared by just a few families. You can walk for miles in either direction. There's a fire pit and Adirondack chairs on the upper beach. We provide beach chairs that you can set up at water's edge. You are welcome to bring small boats, kayaks, or water rafts. Larger boats must be launched about a mile down the beach.
This year-round home is two lots over from the beach and is surrounded by woods. When the lake winds kick up, the backyard is a quiet retreat and great place for a fire. From the covered front porch you can relax and listen to the waves. You can see slivers of lake but the view is partially obscured by cottages across the road.
There's always some wildlife to observe, even from inside where there are floor-to-ceiling windows facing the woods. Hiking around the woods, you might stumble upon the old Dutch cemetery or the raptor conservation station. When it's quiet, the deer will actually take a nap in the backyard.
Autumn is a crisp and beautiful time here. As the trees lose their leaves, you can see deeper into the woods. It's a great time to explore the surroundings with the crunch of leaves underfoot.
As winter sets in, so does peace and quiet. It seems that the snow always falls more gently down here as we are protected from the howling west winds. Bring your cross-country skis or snow shoes.
The home includes two bedrooms. The master has a queen-size bed and enough space for a portable crib. Second bedroom has a full-size bed, plus there's a full sofa sleeper in the living room. The recently renovated bathroom has a tile shower and nice vanity.
The living room is classic knotty pine with a wood-burning fireplace and comfortable furniture. There is a large-screen TV and WiFi conection.
The large kitchen/dining area has all you need to cook and serve your group. There's also a built-in desk area. The mudroom has front-loading washer and dryer, plus there's an attached garage with opener.
Any time of year -- you will relax and have fun at Windmill Beach.
I am ten minutes away and available to answer questions and take care of any needs that may arise during your stay
Colleen Swart purchased this house in 2012
The beach and ever-changing shoreline are scenic for walking and relaxing. A refreshing dip in the water for some of us. Body surfing, kayaking and the new paddle boarding for the more active. Gathering around fire on upper beach or having our own fire in wooded backyard. On blustery days, walking the wooded lake roads where you are protected from the wind. Just relaxing around the fireplace
The rooms were very clean and comfortable and the kitchen had a very good collection of utensils, supplies, etc. The beach was within a house or so walk, and it was very shallow and great for the little kids. All the arrangements went smoothly. We saw an eagle's nest, a family of deer, several bunnies, many birds, and even a couple of fish in the water. On a clear night you can see the Milky Way. Also, you can buy stroopwaffles in the stores nearby.
We recommend it highly and would love to return in a year or two. To the owners: thanks for doing this!
After a great vacation here last summer, we had to return and were not disappointed! We had a relaxing and enjoyable time that included a lot of beach time (kayaking, building sand cities with our 4 grandkids), hiking, biking and, to top even that, saw the eagle and her young that are nesting a short distance from the cottage!
Our children and grandchildren visited for a few days (they live nearby) and we created more great and sweet memories with them.
The house is perfect for families. The hosts were very helpful and accommodating. The beach and the lake are perfect for small children and the neighbors are all very friendly.
We had a wonderful time and hope to be back in the future
Great accommodations, thoughtful hosts and perfect environment for a relaxing vacation! Biked, hiked, kayaked, played in the sand with grandkids, explored the area - had a wonderful time. We hope to return next year!
We enjoyed our time on the beach, biking, strawberry picking, hiking at the state park and s'mores by night. The home was clean and very comfortable, especially the beds. The neighbors in the area are also very friendly. We have a wonderful time, thank you.
We absolutely loved our short stay at this cozy beach house! The owner met us there the evening we arrived to give us a tour and hand us the keys. She was very nice considering we had many delays on the day of our arrival and we arrived many hours later than anticipated. The house had everything we would need including bath linens, beach towels, kitchen supplies complete with grill tools for the outdoor gas grill. If you stay here, you really don't need to bring much along besides your clothes. The house was very clean and well kept.
We loved taking walks along the dirt road amongst the woods and even ventured to the old cemetery at the top of the hill. Our 12 year old had great fun at the beach which is only a few steps away. The neighbors are our friends so it was easy to socialize but if you wanted to have time alone, this is also a perfect place to do that . The back patio was lovely and we sat around the firepit a couple of diferent nights and enjoyed the sounds of the woods. Oostberg is only a few minutes away and we enjoyed going there for groceries and checking out a couple of interesting stores. We will definitely bring our bicycles with next time and ride the bike path into Oostburg. Sheboygan has a fantastic farmer's market that I enjoyed shopping at on Saturday. We definitely recommend this home and would love to stay again!
This area has a variety of festivals and picnics that are unique, but not so huge that you have to fight the crowds. It is an easy drive to Elkhart Lake's Road America race track and championship golf courses including Kohler's Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straights. The Sheboygan area (20 minutes north) has the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Stephanie Weill Center for the Performing Arts, plus a host of restaurants and shops. For kids, there's a fun children's museum, Bookworm Gardens and indoor waterpark.
