This property has everything you could possibly need for an amazing Columbia County/Berkshire getaway with or without the kids. The cottage has 5 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. Cook and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner in the eat-in kitchen. Sit back and relax on the covered outdoor porch and watch your friends and kids play tennis. Take a fresh dip in the pool. Enjoy the miles of walking paths around the 800 acre farm where you'll find grazing horses, dairy cows, open fields and wildlife. Go fishing at the 20 acre lake where bass and sunfish are always an easy catch. If you're lucky, you might see the almighty bald eagle soar above. If you'd like to venture into town, Hillsdale, Great Barrington, and Hudson all less than 30 minutes away where you'll find theater, music, dance, art galleries, antiques, shopping and an array of restaurants. Just minutes from Catamount for winter downhill skiing and summer activities. Satellite TV, Internet, wifi, bedding, towels, and washer/dryer are all included.
Skarship Farm consists of four contiguous farms purchased by Ole Skaarup in 1976. He developed one of the finest Angus herds in the country at a time when Angus cows were being bred to improve the beef quality and production. Now, the Angus logo signifies the highest quality beef. Our herd was dispersed in the 80's and the Skaarup family has kept the land in farming by leasing it to local farmers who grow hay, corn and soybeans and pasture their animals on the 800 pristine acres.
Frank Parker purchased this cottage in 1976
Ole Skaarup, a Danish immigrant and shipowner decided that he wanted to own land so that 'when all else failed, we'd have a place to grow potatoes.' Although the soil does not lend itself to growing potatoes on a large scale we have been known to harvest 1000 pounds of delicious spuds for the family and winter storage.
The cottage at Skarship Farm is a great place to 'unplug' from your busy life. Families with children will appreciate being able to send the kids outside where they are safe from traffic and can enjoy all the entertainment the natural surroundings have to offer. Our pool is fenced and we require that children are accompanied by an adult at all times. The tennis court is a great place to practice new bicycle skills as well as tennis of course. Our guests are most welcome to venture out onto our 800 acre farm, on mowed trails minimizing tick exposure. The lake is full of wide mouth bass, but we ask that you 'catch and release' and take just one back to the cottage to sample. There is no reason be be confined to the beds in the cottage either. You are welcome to pitch a tent outside and experience sleeping under the stars.
This property is by far one of the most beautiful properties we have stayed at in the Upstate NY area. My wife, twins (age 2) and I wanted a place that had cascading hills with amazing views, a pool and large yard for our kids to run around. This property delivered everything that we wanted. The pool and the area around the pool were very clean. The tennis court was great as well. There are trails through the woods and property that are carved out. The cottage is nice. It was spacious and allowed us to invite grandparents and friends to stay with us for a few days. My only negative about the cottage is that you do encounter bugs from time to time. However, this to me is normal for a country house. The location of the farm is great with close proximity to Great Barrington, Stockbridge, and Lee in Massachusetts and Hudson in NY. I highly recommend this property.
Skarship Cottage proved a natural heaven, with all the necessary amenities for a really blissful holiday. Set amid the rolling green horizons of Columbia County in upstate New York, the property is just a five-minute drive from the hamlet of Hillsdale, with access further afield to the hipster town of Hudson, NY, as well as several historic and interesting centres across the state line: Great Barrington, Lenox, and Stockbridge, MA. The Norman Rockwell Museum near Stockbridge and the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, both world-class cultural highlights, were worth half-day trips.
The rental is a large, five-bedroom, three-bathroom cottage up a long gravel drive and just 20 yards from a private tennis court and fewer to the icily refreshing swimming pool. We enjoyed both every day. There's also a large pond a few hundred yards away, which makes for a pristine view and attracts waterfowl. There is a canoe to paddle out in or even fish (and release). A large barn converted into a home sits opposite the cottage across the gravel drive, but is no longer used by the owners. A working farm with cows and horses sits far away across the public road that splits the massive property.
Our two families comprised four adults, a teen, and two primary schoolers and this place accommodated us well. It has space to find your own nook to curl up with a book (two separate verandahs with wicker sofas and rocking chairs, as well as a small deck, on different sides of the house), plus areas such as the kitchen/dining table for games, chats, colouring books, or meals together. The Rio Olympics was happening during our stay, so the TV was appreciated. So was the washer-dryer. The beds were comfy and the showers worked well, and the home’s rustic charm (wooden floors, a vintage school desk and bureaus) lent cosiness. The property is just a couple of hours' drive up the Mass Turnpike from Boston, or three hours through the Hudson Valley from NYC.
The most striking appeal of Skarship was the serenity offered by its vast tracts of surrounding woodland, forest and farms. We were barely aware of other human life. Pure country—with just cricket or bird song most hours of the day. Wildlife was abundant: we saw butterflies, cardinals, falcons, chipmunks, squirrels, wild geese, foxes, deer and wild rabbits along early-morning trails and in meadows of wild flowers. We didn’t want to leave after a week, and we definitely hope to return.
