I am originally from South Louisiana. In my 20's my son & I made our way to Houston. Worked my first 10 years in sales & marketing in the oil industry. Traveled the world for a few years and then when the oil market dried up in the 80's opened up a real estate company in Northwest Houston for 13 years. After 22 years of Houston decided to move to Florida to live on the ocean . After 6 years living in Florida I moved to El Salvador where house prices & taxes were affordable . I bought me a couple of houses, did some major construction & I have been here ever since. Not an easy task since I don't speak Spanish. Learning Spanish slowly but not as easy as you would think. My manager, Jackie & I have developed our own special Spanish after 7 years.
I know you hear of stories about how terrible crime is in El Salvador but I am a single woman living here on my own and never have understood why they say what they do about this country. I find the people wonderful and so much caring in them. Also living here has made me appreciate how lucky I was to be born in the U.S. where I had been given so many opportunities in life. All I have to do is look around me each day to understand that life could have been so much different if I had been born just a little farther South of the border. The good news is that I get to live on the ocean & never have to do housework again since labor is sooooo cheap. Love this country!!
Dianne purchased this house in 2005
This property I bought 9 years ago and have gone through all the pain of getting it perfect. I bought it cheap so it did not look anything like it does today. I have added special touches to this house everywhere. When you stay here everyone feels those special little things all around them to give them a real feeling of home. I love what I do and it shows throughout this home that I have built with love for both this house & this country. It has been up for rent for over 2 years and has become very popular. I wanted to offer people a special experience while they were staying in El Salvador with as many of the modern conviences I could for an affordable price. I love Playa San Diego because I feel I can mix with both the locals & the other American & Canadians that have retired here. Also I get tired of speaking in my broken Spanish so off I go for a little visit among friends right down the street. I love the location due to it being so close to both the airport & San Salvador. The other thing I love is the beach here. It is the most beautiful I have seen traveling throughout El Salvador. Also I walk the beaches without fear of anything happening to me. It is a small community and most locals know of each other & if something does happen, everyone knows who did it so it keeps our crime to a minimum. We have a local police station about 10 houses from mine and they patrol on bikes and foot. We also have lights on our electrical post so you can see at night if you are walking or driving. When I get bored or need to shop, all I have to do is take a 5 minute drive to La libertad. Love the location & convenience to everything. If I had to do it all over again with what I know today, I would still come back and buy in San Diego Playa. I hope you come to my house and enjoy the great experience of El Salvador as I have. The house looks like the photos so no surprises when you arrive.
WI FI INTERNET . AFFORDABLE...AIRPORT TRANSPORATION AVAILABLE *CLOSE to AIRPORT 30 minutes away, San Salvador* & SUPERMARKETS.....A/C IN BEDROOMS.. Satellite TV. HOT SHOWERS. COOK & MAID SERVICE AVAILALBE. PAY FOR ONLY THE EXTRAS YOU WANT. , great house for entertaining. COMFORTABLE, CLEAN & QUIET. . KING & QUEEN BEDS with MEMORY FOAM. direct on ocean with a FLAT BEACH and NO ROCKS. FRIENDLY COMMUNITY so you get to experience El Salvador the way it should be. Playa San Diego is a large community with small local restaurants, little convenience stores up and down the streets,& local buses that run every 30 minutes but not too large if you need to find your way back to Rancho Cajun. A great place to experience local life at it's best in El Salvador.
Rancho Cajun was great! It actually exceeded my expectations. From the moment I inquired about our stay until the day we left the house, it was great! It was a total of 4 adults (2 couples) and we all felt comfortable and safe at Rancho Cajun. Safety was one of my main concerns going to El Salvador but there is nothing to worry about in Playa San Diego. The BBQ grill came in handy on one of the nights as we grilled and enjoyed some music while watching the sunset and hearing the ocean waves a few feet from the house! The pool was awesome as well. Every day in the morning it gets cleaned so that the water stays fresh for you! The air conditioners in the bedrooms are a plus as well since it tends to get really hot and humid in El Salvador especially around the time we went. My buddy even used the third bedroom because he was snoring too loud one night and his wife gave him the boot! That room also has some great A/C. There are also lots of fans throughout the property. Prior to our arrival we asked Dianne if she could help us find someone to pick us up at the airport. She recommended a young man named Miguel which also happens to be one of her property managers. He picked us up the airport promptly and we ended up feeling very comfortable with him that we hired him as our tour guide for the rest of our stay. My friend didn’t speak Spanish so it was a plus that Miguel knew English as well so that she could communicate with him also. Miguel was very easy to talk to and very friendly just like all the locals in Playa San Diego. I honestly cannot say one bad thing about our experience in El Salvador! If you love Pupusas like I do, there is a Pupuseria not too far which is actually walking distance from Ranch Cajun where they also have a jukebox and beer! Our first night we partied there until 3AM! 3 Pupusas for $1 …You can’t beat that! In the mornings if you do not feel like cooking you can just call the “tiendita” or store where they will make you a typical Salvadoran breakfast and deliver it to your house if you don’t feel like walking a block for only $3...Great location and great house! We had a blast and next time I decide to go back I will definitely be staying there and will look Miguel up to show me more of this beautiful country! You can’t go wrong with this house! Great people, great food around you, and great location! Vacation life!
P.S. Miguel’s wife Natalie was also great and had a lot of recommendations on what to do there. Thank you guys!
This Review is long overdue!
Thank you Dianne and Nataly,
From Joseph and Family of California. April 2016
First off the pictures are very accurate and shows as nice as the photos taken on VRBO.
We frequently travel to El Salvador with my Family and have considered This Beach Front Rental Home, as my Home Away from Home. Now six times we have enjoyed this house and, have made it our Destination and a place to have our Family Reunion. We usually have a Birthday to celebrate and this is the Perfect location, warm beaches, warm weather and clean private sandy beaches are steps from the house. The Tempter is just right and the Waves bring in some of the best swimming around. The Sunsets are also a favorite part of this place too.
Dianne is the Gracious Host and owner. She always makes it a point to see if anything is needed from Ideas of where to eat to making the home comfortable. There are many things to do at this Location, everything is minutes away. The Super Selecto’s is like having everything right here. There are mini stores steps from the gate.
We feel safe and comfortable with Dianne’s home and Recommend her house to anyone who wants a Beach front Property to have a fun and relaxing Time while traveling Central America.
Consider staying here the entire time of your travels here in El Salvador
Great Value Great location and Fantastic Hospitality, thank you!
Guest at this rental since 2012
This was a return visit for me and my 8 Guatemalan kids and grandkids. Not too much has changed since I wrote my earlier reviews (Parts 1 & 2) last year. The new manager, Nataly, speaks flawless English and her husband Daniel did my airport transfer ($40). Dianne is still her wonderful self.
I arrived exhausted and was so happy to see my queen bed with its memory foam. The master bedroom is ocean front, has 2 excellent reading lights whose switches can be reached while in bed, bedside table for water and coffee, and comfortable private bath. Waking to the sounds of the ocean waves was magical and I slipped outside before daybreak to watch the full moon over the Pacific. Security of the compound's excellent.
Rancho Cajun isn't shiny and new - it's a little worn and comfy like your favorite jeans or sweater. One needs to be gentle with the screens and sliding glass doors - but oh what a view with 5 doors covering the entire southwest wall. The northern most door is just 4'-5 ' from the lovely pool. Neto will probably have it cleaned before you're up for coffee.
Do take advantage of pre arrival shopping - we paid $20 (usually $10) as Nataly bought $198 groceries so our large family didn't need to shop for a couple of days. The supermarket is a 10-12 minute run and has prices comparable with our local FL markets. Using US$ is convenient, and there's an ATM at the market. I'd suggest bringing both ATM and credit cards here. My Visa worked well at the gas station, market and a larger restaurant.
Two sightseeing options we did this time were:
1) 6 1/2 hour visit to the San Salvador Volcano. We had a long lunch - but it's a wonderful place to have a picnic or to eat 'street' food near the visitor information center. It was a lot of walking and super crowded during the Easter holiday. The 45 minute hike to the top's optional with nice vistas reachable by car. The interesting archaeological site of Joya de Ceren is nearby. I'd recommend making it a day trip by visiting it first.
2) The nearby National Park Walter Thio Deinger is beautiful and wild with cold water, sodas, bathroom, and picnic tables. Entrance for 6 was $7. The Extreme Adventure course ($5) took an hour and was completed by my 9 year old grandson, 3 granddaughters and son-in-law. 3 guides worked with our group to guide them thru the many physical challenges. Rapelling was $3 and only completed by my son-in-law, the rest of us were content with the amazing photo ops.
We were so happy with this place. This was our second trip to El Salvador but my sister and her families first. They were not disappointed. When we arrived the beach was the first place we hit and it was a beautiful clean sandy beach. We were in paradise!! Dianne was very sweet and very accommodating in every way. Edwin checked on us to make sure we were doing okay and see if we needed anything. If we did he was on the spot about getting it asap. Both Dianne and Edwin were awesome about suggestions of where to eat or places to try. The view was was amazing from the house to look outside your window or door and right there is the ocean. There was so many opportunities to eat with the locals and try all the food delivered to your door!! I highly recommend this place!! I would have to say the only down side was due to the storms (we went during their rain season) it swept all the trash from the rivers into the ocean and on to the beaches. No one cleaned up the beaches afterward the storms so we had a hard time enjoying the last two days we had set aside for beach time. Even with that, we all agreed we would stay there again. We love El Salvador!!!
Words cannot express what an amazing time my family, friends, and I had at Rancho Cajun (El Salvador being the 24th country I've visited!). Dianne, Edwin, Marta, Neto and his brothers, and neighbors were so friendly and helpful. Stop by abuelita's (Alicia’s) house and try her homemade, hand pressed tortillas. I hope to return soon, and possibly permanently. Until then, if you visit this captivating neighborhood, please tell everyone Shannon says HI! And don’t forget your bug spray!!
I think that Rancho Cajun has worked perfectly to meet our needs! Diane was very attentive and helpful which was greatly appreciated. She has a sign above the door that states "enter as strangers, leave as friends" which is definitely applicable when Diane is your host. Her staff, Edwin and Martha, are very helpful and attentive. Anything we needed they could help us get. The house is as pictured and fit 12 of us very comfortably. The beach is nice, but the pool is better for swimming. I loved hanging over the side of the pool and watching the waves crash onto the beach! Neto is a taxi driver that Diane sent us to who was wonderful to work with. He drove us everywhere we needed to go, which worked better than having a car in my opinion. Driving here is not that easy and addresses are hard to find. In the end I think it even ended up to be less expensive than renting a car and it felt good to help his small family business. The beach area of SanDiego Beach has proven to be friendly and welcoming. From 7-9 if you stand out in front of the house fresh bread, fruit, vegetable, and seafood vendors will drive by and sell you stuff at a good price. Have small bills ready and don't be afraid to give a good but lower offer. Overall, I have felt very safe here. For the most part we just were happy to stay and hang out here at the house and on the beach. I would highly recommend this location for your stay, especially if you are going to be entertaining El Salvadorian family as we were!
We have a turtle sanctuary in walking distance on our beach. There also is a state park just 5 minutes away. San Salvador is a short 30 minute ride and you can find anything you want there. Also a state park named Deininger Park is located about a 5 minute drive to the house
