2 Bedrooms: one with 2 single beds or one double, the other with double bed. A bathroom with bathtub with shower and sink. A toilet with WC and sink. Living and kitchen area, entrance area. Private entrance and a small entrance balcony. Private parking. All modern facilities: wireless internet, TV, dishwasher, espresso coffeemaker etc.
You could not get a better location only a few hundred yards between the cathedral and main street. Mark of Sacramento's review sums it up well. Ideal for a family of 4 or 5. Einar is doing the flat up sympathetically to its age and not quite finished. But the washing machine and dishwasher are a bonus we did not have in any of our previous accommodations. And we loved the all round views. In the main picture it is the top floor of the pale green house, not the blue or yellow one.
PROS: Perfect downtown location! Divine bakery across street. Affordable eatery at corner. Safe neighborhood, charming and easy walking to downtown sights and church. But the pros end there.
CONS: First, this is not a 2 bedroom rental. There are 2 rooms: 1) a bedroom, and 2) the living room/kitchen, which has 2 beds in it. I'm all for affordable, budget accommodations, but would not recommend this place. Owner was difficult to communicate with on many levels, and the hassle was just not worth it. Debris throughout overgrown yard and broken furniture in cluttered living room. We were told previous tenants had broken a few things and owner hadn't had a chance to cart it away. Overall, the place was in poor shape and not very clean.
We were one adult and 2 teenagers. Upon arrival, only one twin bed was made up and ready to sleep in. Owner was not very time-responsive about this. (He tried to tell me on last day that an IKEA mattress cover was an "Icelandic sheet".) Our solution was to borrow bedding from travel friends staying in nearby apartment.
Shower is not adequately described in VRBO. Although awkward, we managed. However, it should be flagged as unusable by anyone with mobility issues. Showerstall is in a tub with a sloping wall. Sink is awkwardly located where you get in and out. As 18yo son said "Anyone over 4ft tall will have a hard time". At very least there should be a non-slip mat for getting in and out. (Took some contortions to enter and exit. I am 5’4”.)
Kitchen was grimy with old food left behind-more than just the usual leftover basic staples. No enclosed cupboards for food storage, so packages (some open) were sticky and dusty. Lots of clutter in kitchen and very little cookware (no lids for any pots). We continually bumped our heads on corner of an awkwardly placed glass cooking hood over the stove. Door handle to the bathroom kept falling off.
I can appreciate the challenge of an older building, probably requires constant maintenance. That said, it could be charming with tweaking of setup, professional cleaning and consistent management. Finally, rates were out of scale compared to our friends’ place around the corner, which was humble but clean and well appointed. I have no idea where some of these 5 star reviews came from.
Recently my family and I had the pleasure of spending a few weeks in Iceland. During this stay we had the privilege of staying at some amazing locations. The sights and sounds of the country were beautiful and our host just made that experience even better. We arrived to find our accommodations just as we expected and during our stay were provided with great recommendations for sights and places to eat by our host. I would highly recommend staying at Einar’s house again. We were a ten minute walk from everything and loved having breakfast from the bakery right across the street. Thank you for be such a great host and we could not ask for a better place to stay in Reykjavik.
My wife and I stayed here with our teenage son in November 2015 and loved it. The apartment itself is large, with lots of good amenities. It is quirky and has a unique style which may not be for everyone, but we liked the style and how it felt like we were using a friend's apartment in Rekyjavik very much.
As described, there is an alcove that functions as a bedroom, and additional beds in the main living/dining/kitchen area. It was plenty of space for us - a real treat compared to a cramped hotel room.
Be aware that there are steep stairs at the entry, and that off-street parking was not available as expected during our stay. A hire car isn't really needed, however, as the apartment is centrally located and we walked to many things during our stay. Shower is small but had endless very hot water. The dishwasher and washing machine are a real plus. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better value for money in the city. We would definitely look to stay here again on our next visit.
Good location. Close to the main shopping streets and restaurants. Bathroom pictures are not representative of what we used as a bathroom. In fact, the bathroom pictured is not the same as the one available in the apartment. Also some of the windows in the living room where there were 2 beds didn't
have blinds. So if day light bothers you when you are trying to sleep it might be a problem. If you are more concerned about location tan comfort then, this apartment is ok.
Apartment in an early 20th town house in the center of old Reykjavik. Close to Hallgrimskirkja, The National Museum, The Museum of Einar Jónsson, The Living Art museum, The Lake etc, supermarkets, delicatessen shops, restaurants in all price categories. The apartment is totally refurbished to modern standards but true to its original style. Wireless internet included.
