Overview

About the property

Aloha,

Please note that the Ginger Farm is an ongoing farm in development. A workshop is currently being built with a future farm dwelling and a barn is planned in the future.

Also, occasionally we have farm workers living in a unit below the house, whom you will hardly notice to help on the farm.

Our future goals are a Nursey, farm shop, eco tours and farm weddings. We want to help locals with developing their own backyard gardens. We are a certified Blue Zone farm.

If you would like an up to date photo of the back of farm of what is in progress, please inquire.

Mahalo,

Kahiwa & Deanna

The Ginger farm is home to Waimea’s famous Cherry Blossom festival. During this time our home is opened up for a Japanese Home Tour, tea tasting, and Japanese craft making. For the remainder of the year we open up our home for guests to rent.

I have 3 miniature goats and two Kune Kune pigs that you get to feed and pet during your stay.

We are located five minutes from Waimea town and only 15 minutes from some of the most pristine beaches on the island, Hapuna and Puako. The house is on a three acre farm overlooking a babbling steam with an avocado tree and a panoramic view of Mauna Kea. Just down the road every Tuesday and Friday is a local farmer’s market where the freshest fruits and vegetables can be found. Another farmer’s market can also be found one block away only on Saturdays.

With temperatures on average a bit cooler compared to the rest of the Island, our home has a fireplace that allows for a warm and comfortable atmosphere.

In addition to the best farmer’s markets, hikes, and beaches minutes away, you will easily reach other exciting destinations. Kona and Hilo are both an hour’s drive away and the entrance on Saddle Road for the 'Mauna Kea Summit' is 30 minutes away. Another 30 minutes away is Honokaa Village leading you to Waipio Valley, and 45 minutes away is Pololu Valley in Hawi. From Hilo it's only 26 more miles to Volcano park.

The town of Wiamea has plenty to offer with its art galleries, boutiques, Parker Ranch, spas, golf, playgrounds, astronomy at the KECK observatory, the Anna Ranch Museum, and a great selection of local restaurants. As stated by one restaurant critic 'For a town of 8,500, little Waimea is turning into a culinary mecca. That may have something to do with the fact that it sits amid some of the state's best farms and ranches. Waimea is all about locally sourced food.' Just see for yourself and visit one of our many farmer's markets.

About Deanna Olivier

Welcome to the Ginger Farm. Deanna, the owner restored this 1938 farm house who is an interior designer.

The name Ginger Farm came to the owners when smelling all the glorious wild ginger flowers on the 3 acres. The ginger farm is a work in progress and soon edible ginger will be planted to replace the current wild variety. The owners have many plans for their farm which they hope will be a place for all the community to enjoy in the future.

Deanna Olivier purchased this farmhouse in 2008

Why Deanna Olivier chose Kamuela

Waimea is the loveliest spot on the island. The Ginger Farm is in the the center of it all.

What makes this farmhouse unique

This is also a perfect location for mountain bikers, triathlon trainers, and any type of sports or science enthusiast. Bikes can be delivered to our home. We also recommend a stroll down the beautiful and fragrant Mudlane located just five minutes from our house.

Delightful and unique experience

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful home and property close to Waimea stores/restaurants as well as Kohala beaches. There was some road noise during the day, but it was fairly quiet at night. The home is beautifully decorated. The owner lives at the house when it is not rented out. This means that the kitchen is really well stocked but there is somewhat limited space to put things away in the bedrooms and bathrooms. Be prepared to get a little muddy taking care of the pigs and goats every day. The owner was very responsive and helpful. We had a wonderful stay.

Unique home with significant issues

  • 1 of 5

Pros:

The kitchen is large, and well suited for cooking meals. There is a good selection of pots, pans and utensils.

The view of Mauna Kea out back is quite nice.

Cons:

With the house perhaps 15 feet away from the major highway through town, the road noise is inescapable. It’s present in every single room of the house, even with all windows and doors closed, and it’s present at all times of the day and night. We found the lanai/veranda unusable due to the excessive noise.

The 3rd "bedroom" is a study/office with a small mattress against a wall that is best suited for children or perhaps teens.

Of the two bathrooms, only 1 has a shower. Neither of the bathrooms has a sink with a mirror above it, nor a toilet roll holder near the toilet.

The living room, at least during our stay, had a strong smell of smoke from the indoor fireplace that would not go away. We did not light the fireplace at any point in time.

The backyard, while it does have a lovely view of Mauna Kea, is overgrown and unmaintained in large parts and is a construction zone in others (as of December 2017). Do request a photo of it before you book.

Owner's Response: For future renters, The house is located 30 feet not 15 feet, it does show on your VRBO map. There is a two Lane Highway not a major highway. We have a new regular twin size bed, which this person called a child's bed. The second bathroom has a Jacuzzi tub that has a shower head attached to it and the toilet paper rolls are in Zen baskets next to the toilet. We have mirrors in the bathroom on both walls to use, they are just not above the sink, which instead we have windows above the sink to see the beautiful view. I have never heard of anyone complain about this before and never thought of it as an issue. The backyard is a working farm and says so in the contract and in the detailed description. If it concerns you we can definitely send you a photo. All of our other guests have had a great time at the Ginger Farm, wishing they could bring a goat home with them.

Peaceful house in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Zen House. The house itself is gorgeous, with Japanese decor and comfy beds and furniture. It was clean and comfortable inside, with a very well equipped kitchen and two bathrooms, and the yard was equally beautiful with a garden, fruit trees and walking trails. The animals (pigs, goats and cat) were a sweet bonus. Our hosts were very understanding when we needed to leave the accommodations a day early (and in a mere 20 minutes) because of a travel snafu. This place has no deficits. Waimea is a little cooler and wetter than communities on the west side of the Big Island, but the town itself (which has several great local restaurants) is located in an ideal spot for an hourlong car ride to Mauna Kea, the Northern East coast of the Island, and the Kona airport. Thank you so much for making the Zen House available to guests.

No cookie cutter home here!

  • 5 of 5

This beautifully designed home is crafted and decorated in Japanese style with no beiges and browns here! It is situated on three beautiful acres with a walking trail around the property. Color, but not too intense, is interwoven throughout this well appointed home. The large gourmet kitchen with anything and everything you need to make a splendid meal is a joy to work in. The fireplace is perfect to take the chill off the occasional cool evening or soak in the sunken Jacuzzi tub. Every room is very clean and well maintained . Three miniature goats (they like to sit in your lap), 2 adorable miniature pigs and two cats will love any attention you give them.

Waimea is a cozy little town (five minutes away) with a movie theater and lots of great places to eat. One of my favorites is Merriman's Restaurant (highway 19 and Opelo Rd. named one of the top five restaurants in Hawaii by Gourmet Magazine) which supports local farmers and growers. Tropical Dreams Ice Cream Factory is on the outskirts of Waimea (Lalamilo Farm Rd. off Mamalohoa Hwy.) and is one of the favorite delights I look forward to every visit (try the white chocolate ginger or ginger ice cream, yum, yum, yum). If you want a smaller container try KTA Market in town.

Another place I am always sure to go too when in Waimea is the Gallery of Great Things(65-1279 Kawaihai Rd. in Parker Square). Over 200 local artists have their wares for sale there including some of the best artist on the island. I bought my favorite set of earrings there. Wishard Gallery is also worthy of your perusal (Parker Ranch Shopping Center Mamalohoa Hwy. in the corner).

I'm an avid snorkeler and some really good beaches (Waialea Bay, beach 69) are just 15-20 minutes away form the Ginger Farm.

Deanna, the owner has thought of everything to make your stay a beautiful memory long after you leave. I plan come back to the Ginger Farm soon and recommend it to family and friends.

Aloha!!!

Super Beautiful home with stunning Mauna Kea views~

  • 5 of 5

This is my very favorite place to stay in Waimea~ the house was built by the owners to very high and beautiful standards~ Every detail of the house design has been hand chosen & is just gorgeous~

The fire place is a great addition & makes this house a very cozy "home"~ the bathrooms are just lovely~ especially the sunken jacuzzi tub... The kitchen is spacious and a great place to cook and entertain, the back of the property has stunning views out across Mauna Kea and the master bedroom has one of the most comfortable beds I've slept on!

Everything you could want is here~ and the town itself is a gem... Saturday markets are charming, and you are central to all the best of the Big Island~ a short drive takes you to Kohala, Waipio Valley, the North Kohala beaches, Hilo & Hamakua~ & a day trip takes you to the Volcanoes Park.

Looking forward to my next trip already! A hui hou!
