charlotte van der leeuw purchased this chateau / country house in 2002
We chose for this house because of the beautiful ! Historical surroundings, very suitable forliving and working.
It feels like having holidays everyday. It is a recreation area:especially in the spring and summer.
You are living in the countryside but within 6 minutes on a bike you are in the historical center of Edam.
Amsterdam is only 20 minutes by car or bus. There is a lot of public transportation.(day and night in theweekends?)
The house is a beautifully converted barn and was very comfortable with everything you could possibly need. It has a wonderful garden, well-stocked kitchen and a very impressive, high ceilinged living room. As a musical family, our kids really loved the digital piano! There are bikes available in the shed which we used to pop to the supermarket, the swimming pool, into Edam and for a longer jaunt to Monnickendam. Towels and linen are provided, so all we had to do was turn up!
Charlotte (the owner) is very personable and gave us plenty of information on the local area - we were touched with her generosity in sharing her home with us.
Although the weather was not great, we had a wonderful time in Holland. Edam is a very charming town with a quaint cheese market and intriguing museum. Our kids enjoyed the nearby water-playground (they made us go back three times!). We visited Amsterdam twice, using the Park and Ride system from the Olympic Stadium that Charlotte recommended. I would thoroughly recommend the house and the area for a break - we're missing it already!
Perfect holidays! Very nice and comfortable house, we felt immediately "at home". Very friendly owner and useful informations and Edam is a lovely town not far away from Amsterdam and close to the water and the nature. The weather was also fine (no rain and often sunny). We hope to return there soon...
My wife and I greatly enjoyed the peace, calm and charm of this house, its substantial garden and its surroundings for our short stay on the outskirts of Edam in June 2014. The photos and description were quite accurate. As a measure of success we rapidly found ourselves referring to "going home" after excursions rather than "back to the house".
Having arrived on a Sunday evening when no shops were open, our host was kind enough to supply coffee and milk for the following morning (though we couldn't find any sugar!). Future guests may find it useful to know that there is a large Deen supermarket at William Pontstraat 82 in Edam (about 6 mins away by car/bike) open from 08:00 to 21:00 Mon-Sat.
Edam itself is a lovely small town, easily navigable on foot (4 mins away by car/bike or a 20 min walk). In particular there are some very attractive views across the canal alongside Schepenmakersdijk. If you have a car or are happy to use public transport, it's very easy to get to Amsterdam e.g. for the (inevitable?) visit to the Rijksmuseum. The underground car park beneath Museumplein (adjacent to the Rijksmuseum) had plenty of spaces when we went midweek.
Tip: if you have a smartphone or tablet, consider downloading the free RIJK app for a set of top notch interactive guides to the Rijksmuseum; but if not, then the museum can supply (similar?) material on a hired iPod ("multimedia tour").
Also, if you are approaching Edam from the South and you have a wide vehicle (or its wing mirrors do not retract) take care not to allow your SatNav to direct you along Oosterkade turning off Burgemeester Versteeghsingel or Keetzijde, the entry to and exit from the first bridge really ARE narrow.
In conclusion, if you want a spacious and tranquil rural base from which to explore Noord-Holland yet one that is only 20 mins away from Amsterdam, look no further.
Finally, an extra thank you to our host, Charlotte, for the availability of the bikes (and for arranging good weather so we could use them!)
We enjoyed our stay in Edam. It was a homecoming for my husband and an opportunity to acquaint his family with their history in Noord Holland.
This is a spacious house with a nice ambience. It is close to Amsterdam. We had a car and drove into the city most of the time..to the Artis and the Rijksmuseum. The bus is close by for you if you do not have a car.
We took most of our meals at home. The kitchen is equipped well. Plus there is a washer and dryer for your use.
We enjoyed the use of the bikes. The neighbors....sheep and lambs...were wonderful. The surroundings are great and a restaurant within walking distance.
Parking is no problem which it can be in other parts of the city.
Our family stayed in this wonderful house in Edam for two weeks over the summer. We loved everything about our stay, from the beautiful views out of all the windows to the cows who walked by every late afternoon to the sound of the seagulls overhead. The location is great: right by the lake for sailing, swimming and long walks; close to the historic center of Edam with its picturesque canals, gabled houses, flowering gardens and churches; twenty minutes from the cosmopolitan excitement of Amsterdam; and in the middle of one of the most beautiful landscapes in Holland, all green fields, farms, polders, unchanged for centuries. The house is comfortable and spacious, with a great yard, parking in front and plenty of privacy. We loved eating out on the terrace and our kids played badminton, went running along the dike and rode the bikes that were conveniently provided. The owners were helpful and easy to communicate with, and we had an all over great experience. Definitely recommended!
We are a family of four and travelled from Calgary AB Canada for the first time overseas with our children. Our kids have some serious health issues and needed the convenience of a home away from home! Our children are 11 and 8 years old; they are both boys and needed space and room to move! This property certainly exceeded our expectations!
The owners were very helpful during the planning of this trip and were very flexible with some of the changes we asked for after our initial booking. They were also available via email during our stay if any questions came up. Quick and courteous responses!
The home is spacious and clean, walking distance to shopping, historical sites, cafes, restaurants and the harbour; wonderful wildlife to observe! The bus stop is also within a 20 minute walk and conveniently takes you to Amsterdam Central Station. Volendam is a beautiful bike ride and the owners provided many bikes for our use. It's an outstanding location for those looking for quaint coastal living with easy access to Amsterdam. Ideal for families.
We look forward to booking another stay and thank the owners for all their help and now their friendship!
We wouldn't hesitate to refer our friends and family!
Edam; a historical small town on the lake; only 15 miles from Amsterdam. Publictransport nearby; in the weekends ,day and night. The surrounding is very quiet and suitable for biking and hiking and ofcourse all the facilities in the city. Nice little shops, museums, restaurants. An ideal place for families.
I ask 50euro for a dog ( if he or she is allowed to stay)
They pay half of the amount to confirm the stay and6 weeks before the arrival the other half.
