This beautiful newly remodeled, 780 sq.ft. one bedroom apartment has all new furnishings and better than hotel quality details. Private separate entrance on the ground floor. One bedroom with queen sized bed, all new bedding & new premium mattress. Apartment can accomodate up to 4 people, but it is best for single person, a couple, or a family. Free wi-fi Internet, flat panel TV with free cable, office/den in apartment with FAX/copier. Full bathroom includes washer & dryer, hair dryer, shampoo & conditioner. Fully equipped kitchen with all dishes, pots & pans, cooking utensils, basic spices, etc. Morning coffee is provided. The view from the window is a mix of spruce, birch and aspen trees. Flower gardens, including iris and lilacs, and a vegetable garden are on the property. In the Summer, we are close to the botanical garden at UAF, and in the Winter, if the auroras are out, they are very likely to be seen right over our house, with no city light pollution to dilute them.

About Carol or Les Smallwood

Les & Carol Smallwood, have been residents in Fairbanks, Alaska, for over 23 years. This home you'd be staying at has been built by Les. The year purchased just indicates the year we purchased the piece of land it sits on. Located among aspen and spruce trees, the apartment suite is on the lower lever and was just remodeled. We have three dogs (all friendly and will not bother you), we love our location and privacy and hope you'll consider staying with us. We look forward to making your stay memorable.

Carol or Les Smallwood purchased this apartment in 1991

Why Carol or Les Smallwood chose Alaska

This piece of property is a total of 2.5 acres that was purchased by Les Smallwood in 1991, and then he began the process of clearing the woods and building the house you see today on it. We picked this part of town because it is near the University, doesn't have a lot of commercial business cluttering and hiding the natural beauty of the area, it is private and quiet, and it is still very close and convenient to everything in town. It is also located within the best schools' districts in the city, ensuring that our kids would go to the best public schools available.

What makes this apartment unique

Living with woods all around means privacy, and that you may get visits from the local moose. The air is fresh, and the water tastes good right out of the faucet, no filtering needed. If you are here in the Summer, the days are long and beautiful. In the Winter, the auroras are clear and strong, without any city light pollution.

Best time of my life!

Finally got to go to Fairbanks. Life long dream. If you get a chance to stay in Fairbanks, you must look into staying here. Les and Carol are absolutely some of the best people I have ever met! The apartment was like home. Everything was comfortable. More than comfortable. When I travel, I normally have a hard time sleeping and just being comfortable. But this place was like being in my own bed. I cannot say one bad thing about it. Way more than I had expected. There was snow and ice on the roads the whole time I was there and Les made sure the driveway and parking was maintained everyday. Les and Carol were always making sure everything was good for me. Les took me to the ice carving show one evening which I had planned to do anyway, but it was sure nice to have the company. It was like having my own personal tour guide. Then we went up to Ester Dome and he showed me the Aurora. It was not very strong that night but Les definitely showed me what to look for and I saw it several times on my own a few days after that. Simply amazing!!! Les and Carol can and will suggest any thing that you may find of interest. The drives and sights that they suggested are permanently embedded in my mind now. No place like I have ever been. Karina and Cooper, (their dogs) came to check on my everyday also. Wonderful, friendly dogs!! If you come to Fairbanks, there are 2 things that you MUST do. One is to make sure you go eat at the Loose Moose Cafe and the other is stay here with Les and Carol! You will not regret either. The month that I was there was the best time of my life. I know that had I stayed in a hotel, my stay would only have been a fraction of what it was. Les and Carol were a huge part of my stay being as great as it was and I can't thank them enough and so glad that I can now call them friends.

Owner's Response: David, Thank you so much for the wonderful write-up! We definitely do call you our friend, and hope you can come back up here again, this time in the summer. Then we can show you a whole bunch of other great things to see in the Fairbanks area. We were so happy to make your stay a pleasure, that's how we think of Alaska, a little bit of magic, where you can find some of the wonder you had when you were young. A place to capture some of that again!Keep in touch with us!

Big thanks to Carol and Les for making our trip out to Fairbanks an amazing one and allowing us to stay in their beautiful home. Carol has always been great at answering great questions and updating us on everything. Even sending us the Aurora and weather forecasts as that was our main reason for going. On top of being extra cool and allowing us flexibility on the check in and check out time do the nature of the flight schedule. Would highly recommend any of my friends stay there on their visit to Fairbanks and we will definitely be visiting again soon!

Thanks Carol & Les!

New Years Fireworks in Fairbanks

Carol and Les were the best homeowners that we have rented from. Carol was so kind to keep us up to date with weather changes. My husband recently fractured his ankle and is using a knee scooter. The rental property is very Handicap accessible . Carol even found a shower bench for him to use for safety. In addition Les and Carol offered suggestions for activities that we were able to take advantage of despite his mobility issues. We were so surprised to see such a New Years Eve Celebration in Fairbanks...what a treat. The Auroras were not really visible, but on a clear day we drove to Denali National Park and saw Denali Mt. in full glory. Thank you for a wonderful trip and start to 2017.

Owner's Response: Ellen & Mike, Thank you very much for the nice review of our place! We enjoyed meeting you and are happy you were able to see most of what you wanted to see, a little auroras, and Denali. We enjoy helping our visitors have a good time in Fairbanks. It's unfortunate that the snowy weather made it so the auroras were not visible much. Maybe you can come back again some time, you're always welcome here! Carol & Les

This is definitely a home away from home that is very nice with everything you need plus plenty of space in the yard. Surrounded by trees in a quiet neighborhood which is relaxing.

Just Like Home...Well with much better scenery

This property is top rated. It is so comfortable and like home. It even had the added touch of DirectTv so we could chill and watch football for a bit between excursions. Les and Carol were amazing hosts. They ensured we were comfortable and knew how to use the condo amenities. They offered suggestions of where to go to see the Northern Lights and left information regarding activities. And Carol even texted me to let me know the forecast had changed and the lights were going to be active. Sadly, we only saw the faint beginnings due to weather. We want to come back!

The location is perfect for a launching point to the various activities in and surrounding Fairbanks.

Thanks Les and Carol for a great experience!!!

We are located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, on the west side of town, only 8 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from shopping, yet still secluded, private wooded setting. In the Summer, we are very close to the botanical garden, and the UAF Large Animal Research station with musk ox and caribou, (reindeer). In the Winter, the auroras can be seen going right over our house!
