And in the summer, you're just 15 feet from hundreds of miles of prime mountain biking trails. Welcome to the unique world of Snow Bear Chalets!
Not only are our chalets truly ON the slope, they’re also exquisitely magical. From the first glimpse of them through the trees, to the feeling you'll experience as you're relaxing in your own private hot tub on the deck, Snow Bear will spoil you with luxury, privacy and beauty. You won't find the quality, the high-end finishes, the gorgeous balcony, the winding staircase and viewing turret, nor the beautiful windows that soar with spectacular breathtaking views at any other rental on the mountain.
Thoughtful design begins before you even walk in the front door, with a keypad-locked cabinet for your skis or snowboard conveniently located on the porch. As you enter the chalet, you’ll find the turret stairs and our welcoming entry area to your left, which has a native Ponderosa pine bench to let you put your ski boots on in comfort as well as shelves and cubbies to store all your gear. There’s a full bathroom to your right, for ease when you’re hustling in from the slopes.
As you continue into the chalet, the jaw-droppingly spectacular great room with cathedral ceiling will unfold in front of you. With a beautiful gas fireplace graced with Montana Moss rock and a native Ponderosa pine mantle, the great room’s cozy ambiance also creates a toasty atmosphere throughout the chalet. And if after a long day of skiing or hiking you just need to relax a bit, you’ll find a large television with Netflix, Amazon and more than 120 channels. Suspended above the forest floor, with floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, you’ll feel like you’re living in the trees every moment of your stay.
Those trees are what will draw you outside, as you slide open the twelve foot window wall and step out onto your 400 sq. ft. deck wrapping around the back of the chalet, high above the forest floor. With a Polywood table seating six and a quality Weber grill, you can cook and dine al fresco as much as you’d like. And when those aching muscles need a little love, your own private hot tub awaits you, perched high amongst the trees.
Returning inside, you’ll find the gourmet kitchen – a chef’s dream! – to the right. With a gourmet Bosch gas range, a convection oven with microwave, dishwasher and french door refrigerator/freezer, you’ll have all the conveniences of home. The gorgeous Cambria Quartz countertops add the finishing touch for a jaw-dropping WOW factor. The chalet is stocked with place settings for 12, including Riedel wine glasses, as well as cooking essentials such as oil, salt, pepper and spices. To help you get going in the morning, we have an easy to use coffee maker with a separate kettle for tea.
The dining island seats seven at mealtime and also functions as an additional prep area or workstation. With high speed wifi throughout the chalet and plenty of outlets underneath the island countertop, you’ll be able to get things done and keep all your devices charged when you just can’t escape that pesky inbox.
Opposite the island you’ll find the master bedroom. The comfy king bed, with a memory foam mattress and luxurious down comforter, is cantilevered out into a window area, so you’ll feel like you’re hanging from the treetops. You’ve got to see it to fully appreciate the amazing architecture! The master is divided from the great room by 3 floor-to-ceiling sliding barn doors that allow great flexibility. By day, leave the doors open for an even more open feel and by night, simply close them for privacy. The main level bathroom, complete with washer and dryer, is just around the corner.
The loft above, accessible via the turret staircase and open to the great room below, features a king and two twin beds and is perfect for small families as it has its own full bathroom as well. Every bed in the chalet has high thread count linens, a cozy bed warmer, a toasty down comforter and luxurious hypoallergenic down pillows. We provide oversize bath sheet towels in each bathroom and for the hot tub.
From the loft you can take a ship’s ladder to the top of the turret – a favorite place to be. This cozy 8′ round room is perfect for viewing the slopes with its 7′ round Xorbee microfiber cushion. For a really killer experience, turn off the lights and enjoy the 600 fiber optic twinkle lights in the ceiling!
No matter what you’re feeling like, each chalet has something for everyone. In addition to the television in the great room and a Sonos system for music throughout the chalet, we have cards, some popular board games, and a small selection of books.
And when you’re ready to head out, you're located right on the slope at Whitefish Mountain Resort, so feel free to bring your own skis or snowboard during winter or your mountain bike during summer, to enjoy the miles and miles of mountain biking trails. You can also rent whatever equipment you need from one of the shops in the resort’s main village no matter the season. About Gail Goodwin
Gail and Darryl live in Whitefish, Montana and through their company, Montana Bear Properties, share their unique properties with guests from all over the world. They acquired their first "bear" property, Dreaming Bear Lodge in Whitefish (see VRBO #4021203), in 2009. Since then, the family has grown. Glacier Bear Retreat, their 5-star private rental, was built INSIDE Glacier National Park in 2013. (See VRBO #3630262 for more information.) Snow Bear Chalets is their latest project, with Ponderosa (VRBO #4249601), Tamarack (VRBO #4249602) and Cedar (VRBO #4249603) bringing ski-in, ski-out treehouse chalets to Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort. Their philosophy is that a lifetime is too short to be ordinary - especially vacation time. Gail and Darryl strive to build and operate properties of exceptional quality, that provide ultimate luxuries to create an unparalleled holiday experience.

Why Gail Goodwin chose Whitefish
Whitefish's laid-back atmosphere makes this tight-knit community, population 6,000, a happy and warm place to visit. Here you’ll find abundant snow and warm smiles, setting the scene for a unique vacation experience—a five-star town in the heart of the Rocky Mountain wilderness near Glacier National Park. Whitefish is appropriately named for the whitefish that the Indians fished from the lake many years ago. In the mid to late 1800s a few settlers came to what is now Whitefish, but the town was not officially established until the early 1900s when the Great Northern Railway decided to build through the area. Trains still pass through the town today, and train tracks on Whitefish Lake's west side serve as a trail to the shoreline for anglers. The Whitefish Railway Depot, built in 1927, is one of the busiest Amtrak stops in the Northwest. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Our authentic mountain town is built on the personalities, charm and wisdom of its local residents who work hard and play harder. Every winter the hearty residents band together to welcome visitors with celebrations like the Whitefish Winter Carnival, complete with a home-town parade, penguin plunge, yetis, vikings, snow sculptures, and non-stop parties. Horses and skiers unite in the Ski Joring races that illustrate the cross-over of the Old West with modern-day adventures!
What makes this Chalet unique
Snow Bear Chalets are so different from any other rental option at Whitefish Mountain Resort, because they are truly magical! From the first glimpse of them through the trees, to the feeling you'll experience as you're relaxing in your own private hot tub on the deck, Snow Bear will spoil you with luxury, privacy and beauty. We were fortunate to find the last lot available at Whitefish Mountain Resort and knew we had to something different than all of the "box" condos on the mountain. Since we love to create unique experiences for our guests, we decided to create Snow Bear Chalets. They were specifically designed as storybook chalets, as usually something this special can only be found in fairy tales or in our dreams! We love the trees on property and decided to build around them and in them rather than cut them down, to keep the beauty of the lot intact. The only way to keep the majority of the trees was to go up - so we built our chalets as "treehouses", cantilevered off of Winter Lane, with a picturesque bridge leading the way into your luxurious chalet. You won't find the quality, the high-end finishes, the private deck, the winding staircase and viewing turret, the private hot tub, the beautiful glass that soars with spectacular breathtaking views at any other rental on the mountain. Welcome to the unique world of Snow Bear Chalets!

The most amazing place I've ever stayed
I left after our stay wishing I could take the entire treehouse with me back to Portland! This property is absolutely beautiful inside and out, unique and interesting, in a magnificent setting right under Chair 3 on Big Mountain. The treehouse was spotless, supremely comfortable, and a model of tasteful simplicity. I would go back again in a heartbeat and have happily recounted our experience there to friends. Gail was a thoughtful and gracious host who made us feel completely at home.
Thank you for staying with us at Snow Bear! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed our little treehouse chalet and that we can look forward to welcoming you back once again. Bring the whole family with you and fill all three chalets with up to 22 people! Thanks again for choosing Snow Bear Chalets!
A perfect getaway, in the best location!
We stayed the last week of January 2018 and had the best time at Snow Bear Chalets as a family! Our daughters had so much fun being in the turret. They even dropped a little letter down from the loft giving instructions for us to enter the turret. The location is slope-side, so as soon as you're ready, step onto Chair 3's slope and head downhill. Some highlights for us: Barbecuing and hot-tubbing on the covered deck, movie nights by the fire, waving to night-skiers on the chairlift, and all the amenities we needed.
Location, layout and amenities are all as advertised (be sure to use the OXO coffee maker, as it makes the smoothest coffee).
The property was very clean and maintained in "like-new" condition.
Customer service was great with Gail. We didn't communicate due to any issues, only to say how much we were enjoying our stay and she was very prompt to reply.
We would, and have, recommended Snow Bear Chalets to family and friends.
There are restaurants nearby, but we enjoyed making food at the tree house. The BBQ was clean and worked great, and so did the stove. Tip: if you plan to use an oven, be familiar with a convection oven/microwave combo and you should be all set!
Thank you Gail, we will be back for a summer trip this year!
Great house, great mountain
This was our first visit to Montana and we loved everything about it, except the “Big Mountain cloud”, which frequently shrouds the mountain. Most days there would be an inversion with foggy grey at the bottom and sunny blue skies up top, but some days were cloudy all the way up. This made for good snow conditions because the snow didn’t warm up and re-freeze every day, but poor visibility at times. Nevertheless, skiing was fabulous, the mountain vibe was laid back, and the terrain offered something for everyone.
Ponderosa tree house was the most ski-in ski-out place I’ve ever seen. Literally, put your skis on at bottom of front steps and go.
Accommodations were top shelf and extremely comfortable. Kitchen was compact, but well stocked; dining area well designed and comfortable. Bedrooms and living space are suitable for 2 couples or 1 couple with 2 or 3 kids. Any more than that would be crowded.
We made good use of the large, beautiful hot tub on the deck, as well as the gas grill. It was fun to be outside grilling or hot tubbing and talk to the folks passing overhead on the number 3 chairlift.
Unexpected bonus was the great restaurants and good food stores in Whitefish, just 20 minutes away.
A Story Book Christmas
Staying at the Ponderosa was truly a magical experience! No expense was spared constructing this magnificent slope side treehouse. My husband and I had enjoyed everything the treehouse had to offer from the heated bed to the heated flooring. We had two favorite pastimes. The first was to start the day by getting up (we were still on eastern std time) brewing a pot of coffee (we weren't smart enough to ever fully get the hang of the coffee maker we will stick to a Keurig) and drinking a cup or two while sitting in the hot tub watching the snow fall or the crew on the mountain prepare for the day. The second was to sit on the built in bench at the island, partake in a cocktail and watch everyone ski down the slopes or those riding the lift up (everyone waved at us continually). Gail was attentive even while on vacation herself to making sure our every need was cared for. She had Doug meet & greet us upon arrival to tour and explain everything, she had the treehouse decorated for Christmas, a fresh tree strung with lights awaiting us to decorate it along with stocking with our names on them, chocolate treats on the island as well our lift tickets waiting on us so we weren't troubled with having to do it. We wanted to get off the beaten path for Christmas this year and the Ponderosa Treehouse and the Town of Whitefish delivered! It was a story book Christmas!!!
Wow! This Place is Amazing!
This place is amazing - true luxury. The views are incredible and it is located right on the slopes. The property is brand new absolutely beautiful. The interior and furnishings are top of the line. My favorite the heated floors in the bathrooms mmmm. The architecture of the treehouse is awe inspiring. The hot tub on the deck is yes!. There is plenty of room for a family of 4 or 5. Kids and adults would love it here. You really do feel like you are in a treehouse when you are inside and level with the chairlift. Wish we could have stayed longer and wish we were there when it snowed. Parking is a little tricky but Gayle is a great hostess and will show you the ropes. Thanks Darryl & Gayle love your place and can't wait to visit again.
Kristi, we loved hosting you and Sparky. It was such fun hearing of your adventures in Glacier and especially about the FIVE bears that you saw during your visit with us!
We look forward to hosting you again soon!
This was a beautiful property in new condition. My husband and I stayed the first night by ourselves. The second night we had our three kids (ages 12-16) join us. It was a perfect place for both scenarios. We walked on Whitefish Mountain, sat on the deck, and spent time relaxing inside enjoying the accommodations. It is a fun experience to stay in a luxury tree house.
Diana, we are grateful to have had you and your family as guests. At Snow Bear, we strive to create help families create exceptional experiences. We look forward to having you back again soon!
Snow Bear Chalets are conveniently located ON the ski slope between Winter Lane and Gelande Avenue, at Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort. One of our favorite things to do is to take the chairlift to the summit, then hike the 6.5 miles back down the trail right to Snow Bear. Ziplines, "Walk in the Treetops" high-line treetop walk, the alpine slide and other attractions also delight visitors in the summer. Snow Bear is just minutes away from Whitefish Lake. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains and created by a melted glacier, Whitefish Lake spans 3,315 acres and is seven miles long. Tourists and property owners can enjoy year-round activities at Whitefish Lake. During the warm summer months, boating, swimming, fishing and hiking entice visitors to the lake and its surrounding areas. On the north and west sides of the lake where the shoreline is less developed, anglers can fish for several kinds of lake trout, northern pike and more. Public use areas for anglers and swimmers include Les Mason Park, City Beach and Whitefish Lake State Park, a 10-acre park with a campground. Golfers can enjoy the Whitefish Golf Course, a public course that boasts being the only 36-hole complex in the state! About 10 minutes from Snow Bear, you'll find the authentic mountain town of Whitefish, with a population of about 6,000. The town's laid back atmosphere makes this tight-knit community a happy and warm place to visit. Here you’ll find abundant snow and warm smiles, setting the scene for a unique vacation experience—a five-star town in the heart of the Rocky Mountain wilderness near Glacier National Park.
