GRAND OPENING! Although we typically require a Saturday-Saturday rental, we are happy to review requests for last minute shorter stays - please get in touch!

Welcome to Ponderosa at Snow Bear Chalets! This beautiful luxury treehouse chalet, literally ON the slope at Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort, sleeps 6 with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths over three levels. With everything from slippers to plush robes, high-end appliances and luxury finishes, to privacy and a killer "treehouse" vibe, you'll want to stay forever! Plus, you're ON the slope, so ski-in/ski-out is literally just walking out your front door. Ponderosa is 100% ski-in AND ski-out - you can ski to Chair 3 in 30 seconds when you're ready to hit the slopes and then ski straight to the chalet when you're ready to come home. And In the summer, you're just 15 feet from hundreds of miles of prime mountain biking trails. Welcome to the unique world of Snow Bear Chalets!

Not only are our chalets truly ON the slope, they’re also exquisitely magical. From the first glimpse of them through the trees, to the feeling you'll experience as you're relaxing in your own private hot tub on the deck, Snow Bear will spoil you with luxury, privacy and beauty. You won't find the quality, the high-end finishes, the gorgeous balcony, the winding staircase and viewing turret, nor the beautiful windows that soar with spectacular breathtaking views at any other rental on the mountain.

Thoughtful design begins before you even walk in the front door, with a keypad-locked cabinet for your skis or snowboard conveniently located on the porch. As you enter the chalet, you’ll find the turret stairs and our welcoming entry area to your left, which has a native Ponderosa pine bench to let you put your ski boots on in comfort as well as shelves and cubbies to store all your gear. There’s a full bathroom to your right, for ease when you’re hustling in from the slopes.

As you continue into the chalet, the jaw-droppingly spectacular great room with cathedral ceiling will unfold in front of you. With a beautiful gas fireplace graced with Montana Moss rock and a native Ponderosa pine mantle, the great room’s cozy ambiance also creates a toasty atmosphere throughout the chalet. And if after a long day of skiing or hiking you just need to relax a bit, you’ll find a large television with Netflix, Amazon and more than 120 channels. Suspended above the forest floor, with floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, you’ll feel like you’re living in the trees every moment of your stay.

Those trees are what will draw you outside, as you slide open the twelve foot window wall and step out onto your 400 sq. ft. deck wrapping around the back of the chalet, high above the forest floor. With a Polywood table seating six and a quality Weber grill, you can cook and dine al fresco as much as you’d like. And when those aching muscles need a little love, your own private hot tub awaits you, perched high amongst the trees.

Returning inside, you’ll find the gourmet kitchen – a chef’s dream! – to the right. With a gourmet Bosch gas range, a convection oven with microwave, dishwasher and french door refrigerator/freezer, you’ll have all the conveniences of home. The gorgeous Cambria Quartz countertops add the finishing touch for a jaw-dropping WOW factor. The chalet is stocked with place settings for 12, including Riedel wine glasses, as well as cooking essentials such as oil, salt, pepper and spices. To help you get going in the morning, we have an easy to use coffee maker with a separate kettle for tea.

The dining island seats seven at mealtime and also functions as an additional prep area or workstation. With high speed wifi throughout the chalet and plenty of outlets underneath the island countertop, you’ll be able to get things done and keep all your devices charged when you just can’t escape that pesky inbox.

Opposite the island you’ll find the master bedroom. The comfy king bed, with a memory foam mattress and luxurious down comforter, is cantilevered out into a window area, so you’ll feel like you’re hanging from the treetops. You’ve got to see it to fully appreciate the amazing architecture! The master is divided from the great room by 3 floor-to-ceiling sliding barn doors that allow great flexibility. By day, leave the doors open for an even more open feel and by night, simply close them for privacy. The main level bathroom, complete with washer and dryer, is just around the corner.

The loft above, accessible via the turret staircase and open to the great room below, features a king and two twin beds and is perfect for small families as it has its own full bathroom as well. Every bed in the chalet has high thread count linens, a cozy bed warmer, a toasty down comforter and luxurious hypoallergenic down pillows. We provide oversize bath sheet towels in each bathroom and for the hot tub.

From the loft you can take a ship’s ladder to the top of the turret – a favorite place to be. This cozy 8′ round room is perfect for viewing the slopes with its 7′ round Xorbee microfiber cushion. For a really killer experience, turn off the lights and enjoy the 600 fiber optic twinkle lights in the ceiling!

No matter what you’re feeling like, each chalet has something for everyone. In addition to the television in the great room and a Sonos system for music throughout the chalet, we have cards, some popular board games, and a small selection of books.

And when you’re ready to head out, you're located right on the slope at Whitefish Mountain Resort, so feel free to bring your own skis or snowboard during winter or your mountain bike during summer, to enjoy the miles and miles of mountain biking trails. You can also rent whatever equipment you need from one of the shops in the resort’s main village no matter the season. All resort amenities, summer and winter, are within easy walking/skiing distance. Just a few blocks away, you’ll find bars, restaurants, and shopping in the main village at Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort!

Snow Bear Chalets is a brand new, unique property with THREE "treehouse" chalets - high above the ground - ON the slopes of Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort. There's nothing like it on any ski mountain in the US (that we're aware of!). From the front door to the snow, you'll be shushing down the mountain within 30 seconds of leaving your private chalet!

Ponderosa is slopeside and is our highest in demand. Tamarack (VRBO #4249602) is identical to Ponderosa and less than 30 feet from the slope. Cedar (VRBO #4249603) is our largest chalet and great for groups. Each Snow Bear Chalet is available for rent by the week, Saturday to Saturday. Book one, two or three chalets and sleep up to 22 guests!

Snow Bear is not for everyone. It's literally the ultimate in luxury living for those who choose a unique, decadent holiday experience. If you're ready to be spoiled on a gorgeous mountain escape, you've found the right place!

About Gail Goodwin

Gail and Darryl live in Whitefish, Montana and through their company, Montana Bear Properties, share their unique properties with guests from all over the world.

They acquired their first "bear" property, Dreaming Bear Lodge in Whitefish (see VRBO #4021203), in 2009. Since then, the family has grown.

Glacier Bear Retreat, their 5-star private rental, was built INSIDE Glacier National Park in 2013. (See VRBO #3630262 for more information.)

Snow Bear Chalets is their latest project, with Ponderosa (VRBO #4249601), Tamarack (VRBO #4249602) and Cedar (VRBO #4249603) bringing ski-in, ski-out treehouse chalets to Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort.

Their philosophy is that a lifetime is too short to be ordinary - especially vacation time. Gail and Darryl strive to build and operate properties of exceptional quality, that provide ultimate luxuries to create an unparalleled holiday experience.

Gail Goodwin purchased this chalet in 2016

Why Gail Goodwin chose Montana

Whitefish's laid-back atmosphere makes this tight-knit community, population 6,000, a happy and warm place to visit. Here you’ll find abundant snow and warm smiles, setting the scene for a unique vacation experience—a five-star town in the heart of the Rocky Mountain wilderness near Glacier National Park.

Whitefish is appropriately named for the whitefish that the Indians fished from the lake many years ago. In the mid to late 1800s a few settlers came to what is now Whitefish, but the town was not officially established until the early 1900s when the Great Northern Railway decided to build through the area. Trains still pass through the town today, and train tracks on Whitefish Lake's west side serve as a trail to the shoreline for anglers. The Whitefish Railway Depot, built in 1927, is one of the busiest Amtrak stops in the Northwest. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

Our authentic mountain town is built on the personalities, charm and wisdom of its local residents who work hard and play harder. Every winter the hearty residents band together to welcome visitors with celebrations like the Whitefish Winter Carnival, complete with a home-town parade, penguin plunge, yetis, vikings, snow sculptures, and non-stop parties. Horses and skiers unite in the Ski Joring races that illustrate the cross-over of the Old West with modern-day adventures!

What makes this chalet unique

Snow Bear Chalets are so different from any other rental option at Whitefish Mountain Resort, because they are truly magical! From the first glimpse of them through the trees, to the feeling you'll experience as you're relaxing in your own private hot tub on the deck, Snow Bear will spoil you with luxury, privacy and beauty.

We were fortunate to find the last lot available at Whitefish Mountain Resort and knew we had to something different than all of the "box" condos on the mountain. Since we love to create unique experiences for our guests, we decided to create Snow Bear Chalets.

They were specifically designed as storybook chalets, as usually something this special can only be found in fairy tales or in our dreams! We love the trees on property and decided to build around them and in them rather than cut them down, to keep the beauty of the lot intact. The only way to keep the majority of the trees was to go up - so we built our chalets as "treehouses", cantilevered off of Winter Lane, with a picturesque bridge leading the way into your luxurious chalet.

You won't find the quality, the high-end finishes, the private deck, the winding staircase and viewing turret, the private hot tub, the beautiful glass that soars with spectacular breathtaking views at any other rental on the mountain. Welcome to the unique world of Snow Bear Chalets!

The most amazing place I've ever stayed

  • 5 of 5

I left after our stay wishing I could take the entire treehouse with me back to Portland! This property is absolutely beautiful inside and out, unique and interesting, in a magnificent setting right under Chair 3 on Big Mountain. The treehouse was spotless, supremely comfortable, and a model of tasteful simplicity. I would go back again in a heartbeat and have happily recounted our experience there to friends. Gail was a thoughtful and gracious host who made us feel completely at home.

Quiet luxury

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautiful property in new condition. My husband and I stayed the first night by ourselves. The second night we had our three kids (ages 12-16) join us. It was a perfect place for both scenarios. We walked on Whitefish Mountain, sat on the deck, and spent time relaxing inside enjoying the accommodations. It is a fun experience to stay in a luxury tree house.

Wonderful, Unique Experience

  • 5 of 5

The pictures and descriptions don't really do justice to this beautiful chalet. You couldn't ask for a more convenient spot on the mountain, right next to Chair 3 and just a short walk into the Village. Of course it would be perfect for a ski vacation, but it was also magical in the summer with the wildflowers blooming and deer grazing nearby.

This is the perfect rental for a family or very close group of friends. Plenty of seating, lots of storage, and a top-notch kitchen that was fully stocked with all the necessary appliances and tools. The layout is ingenious and feels far more spacious than the listed 825 sq feet. If there are family members less than comfortable with stairs the first floor contains everything you would need including the washer/dryer and deck access.

This is a fabulous place!

Owner's Response: Thank you Julie! We're happy to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. I think it's difficult to choose which season is more beautiful at Snow Bear, summer or winter, for they are each spectacular in their own way. The summer with the warm breezes and the gorgeous, lush green mountains, and the winter with some of the most amazing powder on the planet.... it's a tough choice! Fortunately, you can have both. We look forward to welcoming you back again this winter! Hugs, Gail

The Snow Bear Chalet Treehouse was AMAZING!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at this incredible treehouse was a combination of fascination on the construction and amazement of the luxury you felt at every turn. I was impressed with the attention to detail from the granite counter tops, high end appliances, beautiful furnishings to the star-gazing turret. This unique luxury accommodation for both summer and winter is fantastic. Ski right up to the door from chair 3 or walk over to the summer activities on the mountain. I enjoyed my morning coffee on the deck as I watched the sunrise over Whitefish Mountain Resort. Truly a unique lodging experience and one I would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Debbie, thank you for staying with us! We're so happy you loved Snow Bear on Whitefish Mountain. I agree with you... it's hard to beat the views from the deck into the mountains overlooking Glacier National Park. And, the sparkly counter tops are one of my favorite features of the treehouses. Thanks to Cambria Quartz and Distinctive Countertops for the beautiful craftsmanship! We look forward to welcoming you back anytime. Thanks again for staying with us. Hugs, Gail

Loved our treehouse getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I loved being here just the two of us, before the summer "season" started. It felt like we had the whole mountain to ourselves, right outside our windows. It's just so cozy! And the layout is perfect- it's a nice space to hang out in. I was blown away when the owner told me the square footage - you'll never believe it because it doesn't feel small at all.

Can't wait to go back in the winter - if it's this magical in the summer it's going to be incredible in the snow!!

Owner's Response: Everyone says the same thing- they expect the treehouse to be small, yet it feels so open and spacious inside! Oh, and that deck is simply amazing, no? Wait until you experience it in the winter! We welcome you and your wife back any time. Thank you for staying with us!

Beautiful beautiful beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at the other Montana Bear vacation rentals and this one is just as spectacular! I stayed here with my husband during the soft opening and loved it. Everything is gorgeous and comfortable- a combination that can be difficult to get right, but that Snow Bear achieves with panache.

It's funny, we both commented on how content we felt just hanging out at the island. We each had a little work to do during our stay and the set up was great- fast internet, enough outlets for us both, comfortable seats, and we had plenty of space to be together but not in each other's way.

On a weird idiosyncratic note, I usually find machine-made drip coffee super unappealing, but the coffeemaker at Ponderosa was awesome. Not only is the coffee great, it's this beautiful dual chamber set up that boils the water completely separately from the coffee. This means you can actually have tea that doesn't taste like coffee - one of my pet peeves about most hotel rooms, SOLVED. Love it!!

We used one of the recommended private chefs our last night and requested a seasonal vegetarian menu, which was incredible! Watching the trees sway around us and listening to the birds chirp while we had dinner on the deck was amazing.

Overall it was a phenomenal experience and I look forward to returning. Highly recommended!

Snow Bear Chalets are conveniently located ON the ski slope between Winter Lane and Gelande Avenue, at Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort. Whitefish Mountain was rated #11 by Ski Magazine of their best ski resorts for 2017! From December to March, the mountain is a winter wonderland with an average snowfall of 335". With 3000 skiable acres, Whitefish Mountain is the 14th largest ski area in the United States. The mountain has a mid-range vertical of 2,353 feet, making it great for skiers of all abilities. And, with more than 100 trails, there's plenty of room for everyone, so the lifts are fast and the lines are short to non-existent.

Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort is also gorgeous in the summer! Ranked #1 among Whitefish attractions on Trip Advisor, Scenic Lift Rides are a must do in the summer. Choose from an enclosed gondola or open chairlift, then sit back and enjoy the mountain scenery as well as views of Whitefish Lake, the Flathead Valley and Glacier National Park on the ride to the summit. Once at the summit, enjoy 360-degree views before returning down the mountain or spend some time up top. One of our favorite things to do is to take the chairlift to the summit, then hike the 6.5 miles back down the trail right to Snow Bear. Ziplines, "Walk in the Treetops" high-line treetop walk, the alpine slide and other attractions also delight visitors in the summer.

Snow Bear is just minutes away from Whitefish Lake. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains and created by a melted glacier, Whitefish Lake spans 3,315 acres and is seven miles long. Tourists and property owners can enjoy year-round activities at Whitefish Lake. During the warm summer months, boating, swimming, fishing and hiking entice visitors to the lake and its surrounding areas. On the north and west sides of the lake where the shoreline is less developed, anglers can fish for several kinds of lake trout, northern pike and more. Public use areas for anglers and swimmers include Les Mason Park, City Beach and Whitefish Lake State Park, a 10-acre park with a campground. Golfers can enjoy the Whitefish Golf Course, a public course that boasts being the only 36-hole complex in the state!

About 10 minutes from Snow Bear, you'll find the authentic mountain town of Whitefish, with a population of about 6,000. The town's laid back atmosphere makes this tight-knit community a happy and warm place to visit. Here you’ll find abundant snow and warm smiles, setting the scene for a unique vacation experience—a five-star town in the heart of the Rocky Mountain wilderness near Glacier National Park.

Open year-round, the World Heritage Site of Glacier National Park is just 25 miles from Whitefish, with summer a picture-perfect time to explore its hanging valleys and emerald peaks. Fish a clear mountain stream, hike an alpine trail, or embark on a historic driving tour of the famed Going-to-the-Sun Road. More than 700 miles of well-marked trails provide an incredible variety of hiking to explore mountain lakes, glaciers, plant life, and glimpses of the full-time residents such as grizzly and black bears, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, moose, deer, and more.
