Walking Distance To Center Of Boardwalk, 2 Bedroom/one Bath/ Kitchen/porch
About Denise Holden
Denise is a cartoonist and obsessive gardener. I grew up in Virginia Beach after my Navy family settled here. I still live in the area, just a few miles away. Tom, my husband and transplanted Buck-eye from Ohio, was a newspaper reporter for over 30 years and now works for the local transit company. We have three children, a very old dog we inherited, lots of plants, and a koi pond that I fuss over. You can ask me about any flower in the garden and I can tell you more than you want to hear. My husband and I both like to cook. We like to travel and have family and friends all over the world. My mother was French, from the South of France, but I have become terribly rusty with the language.
Denise Holden purchased this Cottage in 1990
Why Denise Holden chose Northeast Virginia Beach
The Pink House is very special to our family. I bought it as a young woman when it had seen better days. The area is quirky, artsy, and alive. Originally, the now 70 year old house was a summer home for a Norfolk family, only used occasionally. I loved how close it was to everything and all the activity surrounding it. The paneling, bathroom tile and fireplace are original late 1940-early 50s. With my father's help, I fixed it up and added the back closet area, redid the kitchen, and over time, made it into a cute, though small, comfortable cottage. My husband moved into the white apartments next door. We became friends and eventually married at the House with all our friends in a backyard ceremony. After our first child was born, the tiny space got to be a bit difficult, so we moved further away, keeping the Pink House as a rental to help pay for it. We love to hike in the State Park and often ride bikes on the boardwalk or go listen to a concert. I love the Neptune Festival in September and buying ice cream during evening strolls. In the Spring of 2016, I decided I wanted to keep the house for family and friends to visit, so we added air conditioning and furnished the house as we would like to live. Over the next few years, I plan to renew the back garden and add a shed so we can have bicycles and beach equipment handy. We are not interested in renting it all the time, but I am proud of this house and would like to share the joy it has given me with other travelers.
What makes this Cottage unique
No question, everyone's favorite part of this house is the front porch. Originally, without air conditioning, it was too hot to stay inside so I had a little table for eating and a sitting area for visiting. If friends driving by saw candles burning, they knew I was home for the evening and would stop by to visit. Every morning I would get my coffee and putter in the garden and in the evening I would go ride my bike or rollerblade on the boardwalk. I love the open kitchen and the huge sunlit windows. I am still acquainted with the owners of the apartments next door, stopping in to chat and catch up with the area news. Within walking distance there's the beach, concerts, food, the Convention Center, lots of restaurants and activities. I've had complete strangers stop to admire the house and take photos of the garden. There's always something going on there, always activity. I love my Little Pink House!

Exactly as Advertised
This was our first time at the pink house, and was an excellent choice for a quick weekend at the beach. Denise is wonderful to work with and provided fantastic customer service and prompt check-in. It was nice to walk to dinner and not have to search for parking!!
Great location, memorable cottage
Denise was highly communicative prior to our visit which made getting to the property and settled extremely easy. The location is terrific in terms of short walking distance not only to the beach but also to stores, restaurants and much more. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a nice place with great touches and location to give you and your family a foundation for vacation memories.
Lovely Stay Once Again!
This was our second stay at the pink house and we loved it once again! The house is adorable and very clean. So many little thoughtful touches in this house that made our stay wonderful (welcome basket, bathroom items, fresh flowers, lovely patio furniture). The location is so perfect, walking distance to shops, restaurants, beach etc. but far away enough from the boardwalk for some peace and quiet at night. Our kids and dogs loved the screened in porch :) we will be back!
A Perfect Small Family Vacation Home
We knew this place was nice by looking at the pictures but the pictures didn't do it justice. This house was beautiful inside and out. It's a smaller house but it is very cozy. My wife, two daughters and myself stayed here for three nights. And we couldn't have enjoyed it more. The house was three blocks from the beach and the boardwalk and shops. We were able to walk everywhere we went. It's within 10 mins of grocery stores and restaurants. There was central air which was a necessity during our stay because it was 90 degrees plus and humid the whole stay. There were dishes and cookware available so we didn't have to leave everytime we wanted a meal. The beds we very comfortable. There were two bedrooms. One with a full size bed and the other with a day bed and a pullout bed. Our girls loved sharing a room and my daughter wanted to keep the day bed. There was Netflix and WiFi available which helped keep the kiddos entertained at night. I guess if there was a negative, and it was a very minor one, it would have to be the bath/shower. It was difficult to use and took some figuring out and there was minimum water pressure. But this wasn't much of a concern to us. To sum everything up this place felt like home. We loved and would love to stay again. I would suggest that anyone visiting the Virginia Beach area to snag it while they can.
Lovely, indeed, with a couple of suggestions
Lovely property. Well equipped and awfully cute.
A couple of suggestions: need more (additional) comfortable seating in LR area-one small loveseat not adequate., also need lamps for reading in LR. Wicker chair not comfortable enough to sit for any length of time, plus no lamp for reading.
BR with white bed needs a better room darkening/insulation shade for the window behind the headboard. Too much light and noise for comfortable sleeping.
Sincerely hope these remarks are helpful.
The house and location were amazing. Unfortunately the homeowner was on vacation and didnt give the check in information (codes and permit locations) before our arrival. I texted, I called, I emailed.... I was very upset as I felt her asking us to respect the check in time of 4 PM when I asked, that she should have made sure we were able to get in at that time. And we could not find the parking permits she said would be on the countertop.
I understand that she was on vacation but there should have been another local contact person.
Vrbo was our God send in finding information.
The beds were comfy, the house was clean and the beach was great.
Would i stay here again??? Possibly, but not while Denise is on vacation. My first day was just frustrating. The rest of the stay was ideal. Communication is key to me.
I guess I should be thankful that the worst rating I have ever received was for missing phone calls.
I've had to think about this response. One the one hand, I am deeply sorry that your experience inconvenienced you to the point of anger. I get it. I wouldn't want to be stuck outside, not sure if ever there would be a way in. (I had that happen once, actually. It's no fun...and then the rain started...)
Again, I am very sorry. I dropped the ball and should either have sent you the information before I left, or been more diligent about keeping the phone line open.
For those reading this, I had turned off my phone for the airplane and forgotten to turn it back on. The elapsed time from her message to me (3:50 EST) to when I finally noticed my phone was still off was 3 hours and 29 minutes.
As far as having others capable of giving out this information, that's a really tricky situation. How many people do you feel comfortable having the code to get in? Right now, it's me, my husband, and the maid. Two of those were on vacation. Do I give out my maid's personal phone? That's more than she signed on for. Do I give the code to HomeAway? How do I keep that information secure? It would be difficult to keep that up to date too since I need to change the codes frequently. I used to use a key system, which was easy for exchanging information, telling the company how to enter, etc. Internet fraud is too pervasive to allow the information out, which is why I now require people to call me, a two step system.
What happened this weekend is all too easy to happen again. So, I'll put an emergency lockbox out and give HomeAway the information. Once used, the key will be changed. This should work better for the company and give me some breathing room for mistakes or other problems. This is not a hotel. I'm doing my best to give people a wonderful experience here. It's a work in progress.
The Pink House is just four blocks from the ocean, and only two blocks from the expressway, providing quick and easy access for traveling. The wide public beach is three miles long and sufficiently wide to allow plenty of space for people to relax and lounge. There is public parking (fee) nearby if you want to have visitors join you for the day, otherwise parking can be difficult. There are restaurants, bars, and convenience stores within walking distance and the boardwalk is a great place to stroll or ride a bike. Bike rentals are available on the boardwalk by the day or hour. When I lived in this house, I always enjoyed the free concerts on the nearby 24th street stage and Beach Street activities all summer long. There are free concerts and shows on Atlantic Avenue from 17th-25th Streets between 6:00-9:00pm during the season, shopping and more touristy-type activities on Pacific Avenue (the resort area is named like a Monopoly Board). On the boardwalk, walkers and bikers have separate paths for convenience. IFly, an indoor sky-diving experience is just a couple blocks away as is Putt-Putt Golf and the Convention Center. Within a 15 minute drive is our beautiful First Landing State Park where you can hike or rent kayaks to get an idea of what the area looked like when settlers first arrived and in the other direction is the Marine Aquarium and Adventure Park for casual or serious obstacle course work and zip-lines. Several local businesses offer surf camps and kayaking tours as well as boat tours and fishing trips. The Virginia Beach Amphitheatre is nearby. Norfolk is just an expressway drive away with ships, museums, and restaurants to explore and festivals almost weekly. The Chrysler Museum has one of the best glass collections in the world and offers classes and demonstrations weekly in their own glass studio. Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens are one hour away. There are local Farmers Markets close by and several large shopping malls to choose from within a 30 minute drive or on the bus route. Two major grocery stores as well as a coin laundry are just blocks away.
