Nestled in 15 acres of Aspen forest lies an amazing luxury retreat. Drive up the driveway, where there is plenty of parking, and begin to unwind as you view one of Colorado’s most breath taking vistas. Hike through your own private forest or sit on the deck with glass of wine and take in the majestic view of Mt. Whetstone and Mt Crested Butte. The view from 8500 feet allows you to feel like you are sitting on top of the world.
When you enter this luxury mountain house, you walk in the first floor mudroom area where there is plenty of space and cubbies to store your ski, fishing, hiking or other outdoor equipment. As you continue to enter the house, you will find a dart board area, an open TV room with a large sectional couch, a flatscreen and a children’s air hockey/pool table. The bedroom with the double bunkbed is located off of this comfortable family room. Also, located on this floor is a bedroom with queen sized bath, a desk and phone line, a exit onto the first floor wraparound deck, a full bathroom with sauna and the laundry area. Head upstairs and when you arrive on the second floor you will see windows and breathtaking views from this large family/kitchen. This room almost feels like you are in a treehouse with cathedral wood ceiling and an open comfortable space to spend time cooking, dining, listening to music, reading and playing games. The sectional couch and the loveseat that also doubles as a pull out couch are both beautiful brown leather. There is a working wood burning stove in this main area. There are 2 different French doors in this upstairs area that exit onto the wraparound deck. There is a proprane grill available for use here and a wonderful outdoor table to enjoy the vast mountain views. This floor has 2 full baths, one located off of the kitchen and one located in the main bedroom. The main bedroom is a beautiful room with French doors to the deck, a double shower with stone tile, double master sink and a walk in closet. The loft is located above this main space and has 2 double beds, a small table and Turkish throw pillows and a leather chair. Plenty of space for relaxing or putting a gaggle of kids! With the loft, the pullout love seat, the king bed in the master, the queen in the downstairs bedroom and the double bunk bed in the second downstairs bedroom, this house will sleep 6-8 (4-6 adults with 2-4 kids) people. The beds and the linens are all very comfortable with down comforters on most of the beds.
This house is a great place for family reunion or a retreat from busy life. It is located above Crested Butte South, only 25 minutes from Mt.CB for downhill skiing, 15 minutes from downtown Crested Butte and 5 minutes from amenities such as coffee shop and roaster, liquor store, Reuben’s Mexican Restaurant, the General Store and gas station, ice rink, town park, Crested Butte South Nordic skiing (the town grooms it through the winter for Skate skiing and classic and just ask for a $5 dollar donation). The trails loop right below our house. We also have an outdoor campfire area with benches and can be used through the season as long as there is no fireban, and a hot tub is located on the first floor deck outside of the main first floor bedroom.
This location is amazing during all seasons, summer you will find that you are very close to some of the best fly fishing in Gunnison River Drainage, just 5 minutes from Cement Creek Road for hiking, trail running, mountain biking, fishing and motor cross. River rafting is available just down the road in Almont or up the Thompson River. During autumn, there are some wonderful festivals happening in Crested Butte such as the CB film fest and Vinotauk… and it is a perfect time of year to be in an Aspen grove… the leaves are so beautiful. Winter is fantastic, sledding can easily be had down the driveway or on the property below the house, ice skating in CB South or town, up to the mountain for downhill skiing, Nordic skiing anywhere in the area or to the yurt at Peanut Lake, the possibilities are endless!
This house is a peaceful rest from the busy everyday of life, the retreat element is probably the biggest draw for our family… we always feel restored and renewed after a few days spend at 550 Lower Highlands.
We purchased this home before we had children. We have raised our 3 children on vacation in this home since they were babies. It is an amazing place for a family vacation, to truly get away, enjoy the mountains and a peaceful retreat.
Molly McIntyre purchased this house in 2001
It is surrounded by an aspen forest on 15 acres. It is SO beautiful. We fell in love with it and Crested Butte. There are many days that we do not even leave the property or even just stay in our pajamas and snuggle in.
Beautiful, very comfortable retreat from it all- get away from the hustle and bustle of life, but still have all the benefits of an amazing little ski town.
"We love your home and the view just blows me away. It's snowing as we speak so my kids are in heaven. We had the most amazing time. The views are something out of a storybook! This is something that myself and my family will never forget."
We stayed at this beautiful home for a week over the summer with four adults and 3 young kids. There is easily room for more people. The things we loved about the place were:
* The view off the huge deck is as good as it gets in CB.
* The space gives plenty of room to watch TV downstairs or tuck away and read a book.
* The kitchen had everything to make meals
* We felt relaxed and spent some days just hanging out at the house for a while and walking nearby. There wasn't that need to be someplace else.
* We put the stereo an shuffle and loved an incredible playlist.
* Molly is a great host. She always responded promptly if we needed anything.
* We liked that there is a small TV room downstairs and it is not part of the main living area. We were there during a rough newsweek and it was peaceful to unplug from the news and enjoy the sound of the breeze through the trees or some great music.
* Beds were extremely comfortable.
* We were with an interior designer who specializes in mountain properties. She raved about the loft upstairs. It's really cozy.
* There is literally a great view out of every window.
Book this place. You won't regret it. The drive to downtown CB is only 10".
We just returned from 5 days staying at this wonderful home in Crested Butte. There were 3 families staying together there ranging in age from 2 to 64. The house has an open floor plan so there was enough room (and enough bathrooms) for everyone. The views from the upstairs deck and windows were spectacular!! We enjoyed the hot tub after a day of hiking. It was a short drive into Crested Butte and/or the summer activities at the ski area. Molly was great to work with and quickly responded to our many questions.
I'm actually a bit embarrassed I've waited this long to write my review but I simply got busy. My family was presented with a rare and wonderful opportunity this past summer when my wife earned a paid four week sabbatical from her job enabling us to spend four consecutive weeks at this wonderful home. I work remotely but phone and computer so I was able to work about half the trip and take vacation days for the rest. This home and location are just incredible! The pictures just do not capture the views. We must have take 100 photos of the sunset over Mt. Whetstone. The great room has floor to ceiling windows and on the backside you feel like your just part of an aspen grove. On the front side is Mt. Whetstone which can be viewed from the deck off the great room floor or from the other deck off the first floor where the hot tub is. I could go on and on about how great CB is, all the hiking, the fishing, mountain biking, ziplines, etc... but the reality is we spent much of our time just sitting out on the deck looking at the mountain with a glass of wine in hand! Of course, being there for a month we did all the other things too. The drive way is steep but my wife's sedan made it without issue. Every day I would walk down the driveway to the "street" (more of a gravel road) and walk all the way down to the end of the road and turn around. The views once you get down to the end of the drive look back into CB and all the mountains surrounding it. My dog and I did this walk at least once a day. Round trip was about 45 minutes and it was phenomenal. There are only two more houses past this house and both were unoccupied for most of our stay. Mornings in August were cool and crisp and I typically had to wear a fleece in the morning. The beds were comfortable. The caretaker (Bill) was a great guy too. We had a few small appliance problems that were addressed quickly and easily.
When we got back to the heat of Texas I was in a funk for about 2 weeks. Our month went by so fast. I cannot recommend this home highly enough. I wish we could go back for ski season. It would be about a 20 minute drive to the ski slopes, FYI. We have stayed in about a dozen VRBO properties now including some very nice homes in other beautiful locations. This house ranks at the very top now for total experience.
The place was a wonderful getaway for us and a great base to go skiing in CB or to go snowshoeing out the back door. They had a pair of snowshoes available for our use which was convenient and the owner was really nice and accommodating. We were 2 couples and the space was definitely very generous for us but didn't feel overwhelming because of the open upstairs construction. You could certainly comfortably accommodate quite a few more people as needed. Everything was as described but still nicer than we imagined. The hot-tub is lovely, there is a beautiful sauna, 2 wrap-around decks, and a lovely kitchen. It was also nice to have high quality speakers in the house and a receiver to play music from your phone (or cd's I guess). We really appreciated and choose the house partially because it has some privacy, although the driveway is a challenge (we did not have 4wd although it is recommended). At worst case you could always park midway up the drive and walk 50 yards to the house. If you prefer a large space and a little privacy to being "at the lift", this is your place.
We had an AMAZING time at the rental property. We were 3 families with 2 toddlers and the house was PERFECT! There was plenty of room for us to spread out and the extra books and games at the house kept our little ones entertained all week. We enjoyed a few days of skiing at Mt. Crested Butte and then came home each afternoon and relaxed in the wonderful hot tub. We even took the kids sledding (with sleds that were available at the house) for the first time and they both loved it! Molly was very easy to work with. The only thing you need to make sure of is that you have a car with 4-wheel drive to get up the steep driveway. It was a great vacation! We'd definitely stay there again.

We would prefer to rent for 2 weeks or a month long time period in July and August. In these longer stays, we might allow a dog if it's low maintenance. There is also no tax paid on a 30 day stay.
