Light-filled, year-round lakefront house, with fireplace, all newly-furnished and decorated in mid-century retro style. Think 'Walden,' think 'On Golden Pond.' Two bedrooms--one queen-sized bed, two twins (new) two full baths, living room with fireplace, dining area, kitchen with dishwasher and microwave, den with pull-out couch, water softener, plus screened in porch, full laundry room, two car garage--and all on the most blissful private 150 acre lake with wonderful fishing--bass and pike--and just a mile off Route 7, Sheffield, handy to everything and spotlessly clean. Good cell reception, slightly rare in the Berkshires. This is a slice of heaven! Everything you need for that perfect getaway. http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Sk7ag-2UV
English professor and husband fell in love with this idyllic house, not least because of the lake, which is amazing. Perfect in all seasons, and something to do all year long. We love the wildlife and drifting gently in the canoe across the private lake--wonderful winter views across private lake, great fishing in the summertime. The land across the road and across the lake is all preserved so your views are spectacular. Great local restaurants and, of course, everything the Berkshires has to offer. You'll be delighted with this rare find and come back again and again. You'll come for the culture--the music, theater, dance--and you'll stay for tranquil hours reading a favorite book on the porch, or beginning to write your novel.
Dr. Gillian Hettinger purchased this house in 2012
This year-round lovely property has everything you want for the perfect vacation getaway--romantic weekend, hiking the Appalachian Trail, skiing, girls' retreat. Feel the weight of the world fall off your shoulders when you enter and look out at the lake, just beyond the slope to water's edge. Cozy wood-burning fireplace with wood supplied. Peaceful, yet not remote and on a sought-after, very private lake with views -- about a mile off Route 7 in Sheffield and just five miles south of Great Barrington. The house is a 60's ranch and is absolutely immaculately clean-- there's also the charm of hearing the screen door slam on the porch which evokes memories of summers past.
200 feet directly on the 150-acre private lake with your own private dock and canoe and protected shoreline across. Surrounded by Land Trust protected property. Enjoy the cozy wood burning fireplace in addition to individually controlled heat in every room. You will never want to leave. Water is pure, tested, and good to drink. All linens and paper products provided--just walk in, relax, and enjoy this magical house--don't you deserve it?
Stayed on this idyllic lake--beautifully furnished house with everything we needed. Fishing for bass was outstanding and it was a wonderful few days.
This property is such a treat! Plenty of room, comfortable, great kitchen for fun family meals and a great location right on the lake. Perfect for privacy, but close to neighbors, country restaurants and grocery just down the road so you don't feel isolated. We really enjoyed exploring the nearby towns for sights and shopping - Great Barrington and Stockbridge were close by and had really nice shops. The house is on a nice road for biking and jogging with minimal traffic.
We wanted a nice mountain get away for a spring break visit. Little did we know we'd be there for what the news called the "worst storm of the decade" = blizzard with 3+ feet of snow. Gillian was in contact with us and regularly available for advice and information. We were able to see the sights the first couple of days, stocked up on groceries and hunkered down to watch the beautiful snowfall. Gillian made sure someone came by to plow the driveway and the next day we were able to make it out and about without any problem. No hesitation to give this wonderful place a 5 star rating in the midst of all this, so imagine how nice it will be in the summer!
I hope we have the opportunity to stay at Elterwater again and would highly recommend it for a great family vacation or a nice get away with friends.
Fantastic weekend get away. House was spacious with a warm fireplace which was great in the snowy weather. Close to all towns and attractions in the berkshires. Can't wait to stay in the nicer weather since the lake is right outside. Beautiful views of the lake from the large windows. Me, my husband and dog really enjoyed our stay.
We had a wonderful winter stay here as a getaway from NYC. The fireplace was roaring each night. Beds were very comfortable. Winter view of the lake was beautiful. Loved the heated bathrooms. Gillian answered all our questions and was very responsive. We will definitely stay again!
we had a wonderful few days at elterwater cottage in sheffield, ma. the house's location on mill pond is stunning, and our stay was very comfortable and relaxing. the host's little touches like putting out a bottle of wine, cookies and leaving flowers on the dining table made us feel welcome. we will definitely be back. thank you gillian!
An absolutely lovely property located in the heart of the Berkshires. The house has everything we needed and lent itself to enjoying this temporary nest. Wonderfully equipped kitchen, comfy beds, a living room with a fireplace, a den with a TV and out of every window a beautiful view. Gillian and her daughter, Caitlyn were terrific hostesses, welcoming us with wine and pumpkin bread waiting at the dining room table. They checked in a few times via email to make sure we were doing OK and assured us that if we needed anything, they would respond - and they did, with restaurant recommendations, grocery stores, and other cool finds in the area. The location of this place is wonderful for day trips. It really is a perfect place and if I could give it 100 stars, I would.
Home is beautiful, cozy and just as pictured! It had everything we needed for our stay and exceeded our expectations. The views of the lake were even better than pictured, especially with the mist rising in the morning. Gillian and her daughter were a pleasure, and made sure we enjoyed our stay in many ways, (fresh eggs in the fridge for one). Their recommendations of where to dine were perfect and added several memories to our experience. They also have a binder full of pamphlets and several books on what to do in the Berkshires, which were very helpful. We did not have a chance to use the canoe or bikes that were available, but would love to on our next return!
Incredible wealth of things to do all year round--all the cultural activities of the Berkshires within easy reach. Great hiking all year, especially close-by Appalachian Trail and Mount Washington Reservation. In summer, close to Sheffield's Berkshire Choral Festival. Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood, Shakespeare and Company, Berkshire Theater Company, Jacob's Pillow. Near to Berkshire School, too, to visit your boarding students or to attend Berkshire Choral Festival. We're five miles south of Great Barrington in Sheffield so you avoid the tourist crush--yet really close to everything--just a mile off Route 7. You have a prime lakefront location on a private lake with remarkable serenity. Great dining all around, including local Guido's Marketplace Cafe smack on Main Street, Stage Coach Inn. Beautiful Sheffield is also the site of historic Shay's Rebellion and the home of Mumbet, early Civil Rights figure. Great hiking-Mount Everett and Mount Washington--plus local covered bridge. Wonderful local wildlife on your doorstep with bald eagle, swans, blue herons. Plus, because of excellent location, you're also close (5 miles) to attractions south in Connecticut such as Music Mountain in Norfolk, Lime Rock for racing and Litchfield--perfect little New England towns, loaded with history. The quintessential New England experience and you'll be delighted you found it. (And ask about local UFO sighting!) Expanded cable with CNN, TNT, PBS, Discovery Channel, ESPN.
