Stay on-property for your entire visit, or drive or ride your bike downtown into the magical hamlet of Ojai, where the iconic film Shangri La was filmed. Currently famous as the idyllic village hideaway for Hollywood insiders and celebs, Ojai has much to explore.
Downtown restaurants are California cafe casual and offer something for everyone, from authentic burritos to tapas Mediterranean-style, from gourmet deli to LA vegetarian, from homemade pizza to local wine tasting, and four coffeehouses thrown in for good measure.
Natural-foods markets are locally owned, and the picture-perfect Sunday Farmer’s Market is friendly and regionally famous.
Shopping is upscale, with boutiques lining the main drag, and a variety of festivals and events each weekend throughout the year.
For the outdoor explorer, the surrounding back roads meandering through orange and avocado groves and up into the mountains are breathtaking. Ojai's backdrop is the Los Padres National Forest and endless trails wind through the valley. One of Ojai’s most popular network of trails and seasonal swim holes is a 1/4 mile stroll from Red Tail Ranch and can be explored on foot, mountain bike, or horseback, with trail rides organized through a ranch at the trailhead.
For the sports enthusiast, Ojai is a nationally famous golf and tennis destination, home to the golf course at The Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, and placed second in a national “tennis town” contest due to it’s perfect weather and pristine open tennis courts. In addition, the lovely Lake Casitas is just 5 miles up the road, with the best bass fishing in California , and a local waterpark for the kids.
Shoppers will find a quaint downtown street of locally owned upscale boutiques and art galleries, including an independent toy store and several quality consignment stores for shoppers who love the hunt. And don’t miss locally famous Bart’s Books, an open air mecca for used books and the people who love them.
Historically, Ojai has served as home to global spiritual and artistic leaders such as Krishnamurti, the Theosophists and Beatrice Wood. Currently, scores of healers, bodyworkers and mystics comprise an active healing community. And local art is everywhere, with frequent studio tours available.
Come treat yourself to a truly special place, a wide open space to e-x-h-a-l-e ....
When I purchased this land in 2000 it was a chemically farmed citrus orchard. I made the three year transition to organic, designed and built the eco villa's and the gardens, diversified, and the culmination of those efforts are this small and wonderful community we now call Red Tail Ranch complete with an organic farm (Mano Farm) and seed company (All Good Things). And yes - there are beautiful Red Tail Hawks here!
Kim McLin purchased this villa in 2000
If you want to experience living in nature but with ultimate comfort, to 'escape it all' but without giving up anything, then you need to spend some time here at Red Tail Ranch. It is a magical and restorative place, a 9000 year old registered archeological site - a milling site of the Oak Grove Indians - productive - the perfect place for an organic farm!
The incredible views, the quiet, the darkness, the stars, the history, the energy, the magic!
This ranch is the most magical place to stay in ojai. My girlfriends and I stayed the night and had the most incredible time. Kim was very welcoming and the sweetest host. She had a crate of oranges and a juicer on the patio and we made the most delicious oj for breakfast. Very relaxing and majestic place to stay and the jacuzzi view is out of this world. Highly recommend staying here and hope to rebook in the future.
My partner and I have stayed twice and each time has been an amazing experience! The rental is tastefully furnished and accommodations are abundantly provided. Plenty of clean towels and bedding, plus the kitchen is equipped well enough for any serious dinner plans. There was even a basket of fresh organic produce provided upon arrival, as well as a crate of sweet oranges to press for morning juice. The property is secluded, tranquil and rejuvenating. We always have a sound sleep and wake up refreshed. The outdoor space is truly special with epic views and beautiful landscaping which highlight the appeal of Ojai's natural beauty. The hot tub and steam shower especially make the stay wonderful; and proximity to restaurants, cafes, etc in Meiners Oaks is very close, with downtown Ojai a short drive away. Enough can't be said about this place, as well as Kim, who is friendly, responds quickly and goes out of her way to make sure your stay is memorable. We honestly can't wait to return!
RedTail Ranch was truly spectacular and well beyond my very high expectations. We had the pleasure of arriving just as Kim's gardens received their first bloom for Spring. The garden was alive. I have never seen a more spectacular garden and I enjoyed hours photographing its beauty in all sorts of light throughout the day.
The property was pristine, warm and delightful. The integral plaster walls were so beautiful and the colours were joyful and added to the experience.
Kim accommodated some special requests and filled the home with fresh flowers. It was clear she takes a lot of pride in her property and was invested in making sure we enjoyed our stay.
Our three children had lots of room to play and explore. They loved the hot tub too and the view from the hot tub was gorgeous and very private.
The local Italian restaurant around the corner was amazing. I am not sure of the name but it was the best pizza I have had in America. It's well rated on Yelp.
Kim's out door table is great for a large family meal or for entertaining friends. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking up a feast too.
Ojai itself was lovely. The local park was really wonderful for kids. Make sure you explore the back streets for some lovely shops full of nice surprises.
Thank you Kim. Our trip was unforgettable and I hope to come back to Red Tail Ranch one day soon.
My husband and I stayed at Red Tail Ranch a few days. Our stay was a couple of months ago and I am still wishing on a daily basis I could go back! If I could dream up the perfect place this would be it. I could not say enough good things about the property and Kim. The house is gorgeous and inviting. The grounds are breathtaking and relaxing. It is close to town yet you feel like you're miles and miles away. Kim is amazing. She makes you feel as if you have known her your whole life but also gives you all the privacy you want. I would highly recommend a visit here. You could not possibly be disappointed!
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing home with us and making our stay better than we could have imagined. We can't wait to come back.
Kim accommodated us at the last moment, and we enjoyed every moment in this amazing villa. We stayed only a few days but was just enough time to unwind and relax with the nature that surrounds this place. The villa is cheerfully decorated and feels enough like home to make you comfortable. Not enough can be said about the property, it's filled with wildlife and little treasures hidden amongst the flowers. Bonus: hot tub. I recommend staying here if you want a private, happy, quiet retreat from the fast-moving city. This is a place where you can slow down and take it all in.
I spent 2 nights in the West Villa with 4 friends to celebrate my 30th birthday, and our experience was spectacular. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful, and the kitchen/living room area is perfect for cooking a home-cooked meal whilst socializing. We honestly didn't even want to leave the property because of how gorgeous it is. The details inside (the fresh tulips, books, decor, vintage furniture, artisan soap) and outside (succulents everywhere, lanterns, fire pit, fountains, amazing flora, hot tub with a view that took our breath away) make this home one-of-a-kind. We were about 15-20 minutes away from downtown Ojai, Meditation Mountain, Old Creek Ranch Winery, and the Portero John Hiking Trail. Kim was such a wonderful hostess and answered all of my (many) questions promptly and graciously. I can't wait to come back. This home is a gem. Thank you, Kim!
