We first traveled to Hatteras Village almost twenty years ago and knew this was remarkable area of the country. Our six children refer to Hatteras as our home away from home. The only downfall for us is that we have to leave after vacation. We built the home and can atest to its fortitude and strength.
Tracey Carbonetto purchased this house in 2001
Hatteras is truly heaven on earth. Take a look at the sky on a clear night and you will see for yourself the true magic. Voted as one of the top ten star gazing places in the country. The migratory birds are amazing and can be seen from the great room windows traveling north in the early spring. Sometimes the flock stretches out for hours at a time.
The local grocery store sells all the supllies you will need for the week. Ride the bikes down, pick up some crab bait and head to some of the marshes and good crabbing spots and bring home a few fresh crabs to eat with dinner.
Star of the Sea wasn't really a star at all. Firstly, when we arrived we realized the house wasn't cleaned well. Including sand in the drawers/beds/quilts, tub jets were grimy, the fridge doors black with dirt and all the bunks weren't made. While this was an ok house, there were many issues and if I had been made aware of them before booking, I probably would have chosen another rental property. Every single sliding glass door that led to a patio was difficult to open and close and stuck. When I contacted the managing agent, they advised that others had complained regarding the doors but because they were dry rotted/old they needed to be replaced. This was quite upsetting since it indicated this was an ongoing issue and the owners were aware and failed to mention it. The owners did say 1 door was out of plumb, yet all of the doors were not functioning as they should. Practically every single faucet/sink was leaking. Which meant that I spent a great deal of time cleaning up water, which wasn't how I wanted to spend my vacation. I contacted Shore Details and the result is included further down in my review. Some of the utensils are rusty. The fridge leaked constantly and again when Shore Details was contacted they came out said they'd get back to us because they needed authorization to do repairs and never contacted us back regarding the fridge or the leaky faucets. The crisper drawers in the fridge were sticking and the freezer door compartment was broken. The water that leaks from the fridge was so much that one night my elderly mom vacationing with us went to retrieve something from the fridge and almost fell. I also spent much of my stay cleaning this water up to avoid any potential accidents. The faucet and shower outside are rusted. The hose valve near the outdoor hot tub is rusted and missing pieces due to rust/rot. I wrote a detailed email to the owner who never responded. However, before we arrived we communicated quite frequently. Also during the rental process the owner discouraged me from buying insurance, at this point I can't help but wonder if it's because of the numerous safety issues all of the above pose. I do not believe the cost of rental for Star of the Sea is commensurate with the condition of this property and I am very disappointed with this rental property experience. I would have greatly appreciated the owner/Shore Details contacting me back.
We had a wonderful time in Hatteras with our kids and grandchildren, making memories. Our stay was mid July 2016. Even though we had a wonderful time, I feel I need to share my concerns. As far as the property rental goes, we had some surprises that took me off guard. Complimentary linen service means sheets, no towels or wash cloths. Don't assume, always ask. This was my mistake. Other things, there were 3 TV's that did not work and it just so happened the folks who wanted to watch tv in their room, they couldn't. The biggest concern of all was the smoke alarms, They all went off one early morning and 6 of them had to be replaced by the company as the units were outdated, ( 2003) from what the repair man stated. The furniture on the deck was unsafe feeling, very rickety, and the sliding glass door to the deck, the framework was rotten and the door could not open so the only way out was through my bedroom. I understand the owner is trying to sell but it would be best to keep up with repairs to keep renters safe. It is a lovely place but the things that are not working like alarms, doors and furniture, really need taken care of.
Lovely home. Beautiful ocean views. We had everything we needed for a nice long weekend in beautiful Hatteras!
This was our first visit to the Outer Banks and it was a perfect house to stay. The house was comfortable, quiet, immaculate, and relaxing. It is very convenient to the beach, local shops, and the ferry to Ocracoke. Had everything we needed for our family vacation. Absolutely recommend this property!
We loved Star of the Sea. Beautiful, roomy, and peaceful. We hated to leave. Felt like our own. The view of the ocean is amazing. In the fall, the sun sets on the ocean. Even though it was November, we spent lots of time on the beach... Just a hop, skip and a jump away. Thanks for sharing your home with us.
Star of the Sea is located conveniently at the northern end of Hatteras Village. Less than a 5 minute drive from the ferry traveling to Ocracoke Island.
