We live in Colorado but enjoy summers on Mt.Desert Island (MDI) where our sons grew up sailing at the local sailing center. We love MDI for Acadia National Park, its beauty, the ocean, wildlife, and a lifestyle of simple pleasures enjoying nature and relaxation.
We enjoy all that summer's offer from sailing, cycling, hiking, and just living simply in a wonderful community. It is a haven we love.
Elisabeth Glass purchased this house in 2003
Mt Desert Island (MDI) is unique among Maine destinations because of Acadia National Park. We love Southwest Harbor for its Maine small town-feel, good restaurants, MDI Community Sailing, and great community. Our home is on the 'quiet side' of MDI, but the cultural attractions of Bar Harbor are only 20 minutes away.
Meadowside Cottage offers us simple summer living where we can walk or cycle to the beach, to the Seawall, or to Southwest Harbor. Our home is on one acre with a meadow on one side and a wooded section beyond the grassy backyard. It is convenient to town, but has a rural feel, too. The Islander bus will stop at the house if you wave at the driver and it provides a free ride all over Mt Desert Island including Bar Harbor.
We stayed in June for a week with another family and would highly recommend this property for two traveling families of four to five people with young children. There is ample room for everyone inside and outside, and a comfortable layout with plenty of entertainment to offer. The road is relatively quiet and the house is located near the rocky beaches of Southwest Harbor but still only about 20 mins from Acadia or Barr Harbor. Would have no problem staying here again, as they provide every amenity you could need in a vacation home. Thanks to Elisabeth for sharing their home with us.
We had a fabulous time on Mount Dessert Island, specifically Southwest Harbor and Acadia National Park. 323 Seawall was a great location on the quiet side with just a short drive to all the island has to offer. This was a very spacious house for our family of 5 adults and one young teen. With beautiful flower gardens, herb and vegetable gardens, and every possible amenity you could ask for, this house has it all. It truly was a well-stocked cook's kitchen. We look forward to coming back someday and staying at this location.
Lovely home. Had everything we needed, and it was extremely conveniently located for getting to the different parts of the park.
This house is close to Seawall in an area that has limited traffic. If you like road cycling you can easily ride right from the driveway and head then head over to NE Harbor, Park Loop Road, etc. We stayed here in early October and had great weather most of the time. 60s and less traffic. It takes a a few additional minutes to get to Park Loop Road, Bar Harbor, etc. but it's well worth it if you appreciate a more quiet relaxed place to come home to. A mile down the street is a great little lobster pound where you can bring dinner back home and they are pretty inexpensive (it's a very bare bones lobster pound ). The town of SW Harbor is no more than 10 minutes drive and there are a few good restaurants there and the Common Good--where you can get unlimited popovers and homemade blueberry jam for a donation that goes to a good cause. The house itself has everything you'll need in terms of dishes, utensils, etc. It's also very spacious--more room the photos or exterior of the house convey. We were just 2 adults and a small child and there was plenty of room for more. Owner is extremely easy to work with. Highly recommend this place for a stay of MDI.
My husband and I had the recent pleasure of taking the entire house located in the heart of hiking, biking and sailing paradise in Maine. Bar Harbor may get all the publicity, but Southwest Harbor is THE place to stay if you treasure the great outdoors. This home, prepared by thoughtful, caring people, was the perfect place to be. Beautifully appointed bedrooms, a large mudroom for storing coats, sweaters, hats and gear. Lots of rooms to live and play in. We love to cook and the kitchen is outfitted with very fine pieces, from abundant, real wine glasses to very sharp knives, top notch cookware and appliances, great plateware, bowls and serving pieces. And LOTS of room. The center island is SO useful, and hides garbage and recycling. We cooked most nights, after enjoying a fire at the firepit. The charcoal grill is a bonus. We also loved the huge sunroom, and could see how a large dining room and living room would be great, but for two, we didn't need all that space. We loved our stay and will hurry back for another vacation in this paradise soon!
Our family stayed at Meadowside Cottage this past week. We were in Southwest Harbor for a wedding. Over the weekend we were six adults and one grandchild with a smaller number staying on to enjoy Mr. Desert Island the rest of the time. This house was perfect for us at all times.
Looking at the vrbo pictures we were worried the house might be too small, but rented it based on one of the reviews that said the pictures do not do justice to the house. This is so true! The first floor is spacious and light filled. The living room is large with a
comfortable sofa and chairs. The dining room is large and the table is comfortable
and inviting. The sun room is large and lovely. The kitchen is generously equipped and
easy to work in. There is a very nice separate study with easy internet access and a
closet full of puzzles, games and videos. The bedrooms, up and down are well furnished.
And the back yard is large with a fire pit and a generous herb, vegetable and flower garden
that can be used by renters. Meadowside Cottage really is a large house that invites
one to rest and relax and feel at home.
And the location is convenient to so much. It is five minutes from downtown
Southwest Harbor, four minutes to the Seawall Picnic Area, and 5 minutes to the beautiful
Ship Harbor hike. Even though we toured Mt. Desert Island in the end we would have
been happy to stay in the immediate area a enjoy the hikes
We would like to recommend the Common Good Soup Kitchen that is next to the
Seawall Motel just a few minutes away. This is a lovely restaurant space with
good views of the seawall. A breakfast of oatmeal, coffee and delicious popovers
are served from 7:30 to 11:30 on a donation basis. The proceeds go to meals
for those in the community who may need food during the off season. It is a warm
The owners were very easy to work with. We had one small leak during a storm
and called the housekeeper who lives across the street. She called the handyman
who also lives nearby and he came over immediately. All were very pleasant and
This is a cared about and cared for home. We have rented from vrbo owners
across the country and can say this is one of the best experiences we have had.
