We have been visiting Big Bear each year for a number of years and fell in love with the area. Our children and grandchildren have joined us there for wonderful vacations. Big Bear offers everything from skiing to boating to live theater to walks in the village to get an ice cream.
Mary & Gary Terkelsen purchased this house in 2011
When we saw Big Bear Castle for the first time we were drawn to it's old world charm and the incredible attention to detail in craftsmanship. It had an abundance of custom features. While large enough to accomodate several families the home had a warmth that made us want to grab a hot chocolate and sit by the fire.
We love the fact that the castle has plenty of room for individual privacy while at the same time allowing for several families to gather in the large livingroom to enjoy the fire, watch TV, enjoy board games with the kids or play pool. The large outdoor patio and courtyard are great for large groups to enjoy a BarBQ or for family to simply sit in the solitude of the mountains or read under the pine treees.
The house is amazing. This is our 3rd year here for thanksgiving and our family has enjoyed it very much. Everything you need is already here
Honestly one of the nicest place we've stayed in big bear. Amazing rooms!! Can't wait to go again..
What a neat home! Absolutely loved our stay at the castle! The space was excellent for our large group. Although the weather was warm (it was the first week in August) there were fans spread throughout the house that could be moved anywhere to make us comfortable. Evenings cooled off enough that we ate dinner outside on the patio every night and we opened all the windows to let the breeze come through. In the mornings we shut the windows and curtains to keep the house cool throughout the day. We loved that there were enough bathrooms that no one ever had to wait their turn (we had several young children in our group...waiting isn't an option for them!). The kids loved exploring the castle, enjoyed watching the movies and playing the games that were on-hand, and, to this day, still talk about their experience there. It created amazing memories for them! In addition to the small children, we also had 3 teenagers. They thought staying over in the casita was super cool and I walked in several times to find them all playing Jenga together. Being able to stay in a home in this area made the whole trip more relaxing and enjoyable. I cannot say enough great things about this home! The homeowners are amazing and super easy to work with and Lysa made check-in and out very easy as well. Our group's consensus is that we all loved it and would definitely recommend it to others.
Very comfortable! Had every amenity we could have wanted. Bbq'ed every night- great grill for a large family! The grandkids loved staying in the castle and there was more than enough room for everyone to spread out. Thank you Mary and Gary! And Lysa the manager was great.
The beds left a lot to be desired. I don't want to write a bad review, because overall, we had a nice stay, but there were a few things that were less than to our liking, some of which the owner/manager had no control over, other things we just let slide, mostly because we just wanted our privacy. But the castle is in need of some minor repairs.
The owners were pleasant and easy to work with. We appreciate the fact that they rented the castle to us, knowing we would have a large group. I can only hope that we left the castle in a satisfactory condition upon our departure. Thank you most sincerely!
That being said, the beds really do need some attention if you continue to rent for much longer. Pillow tops would be a tremendous addition. There is inadequate air circulation in the place, and of course as luck would have it, we were there the hottest weekend of the year. Can't blame the owners there, but it did make for unpleasant sleeping as the castle was very hot, that coupled with uncomfortable beds made for a less than 5 star stay. The BBQ was quite rickety and needs the bolts tightened. We used it with great care. Had a few problems with the refrigerator door closing, but after readjusting the contents were finally able to get it to close. Only to have the problem resurface the next time it was opened and items were removed and/or returned.
As far as size goes, the castle was quite adequate for our group which ended up being 13. There was plenty of parking in the driveway, and the use of the single car garage was nice. Our group really enjoyed exploring the castle's many rooms and the furniture was quite nice. The large kitchen was nice to work in, and was well stocked. The patio, although smaller than we expected, was nice, and we enjoyed the evenings cooling off after the warm 90 degree days. Our guests enjoyed the jacuzzi and the pool table very much, the puzzles also entertained.
Like I said, overall, we enjoyed our stay! Thanks again!
We have stayed at other VRBO homes and I have never felt like they were cleaned properly. I have even brought out the cleaning supplies to clean it better myself. I was not expecting this stay to be any different, but boy was I surprised!! I never felt that icky feeling here, I never saw signs of any bugs inside, the windows and bathrooms were up to my standards through out the entire house. I was able to enjoy myself so much more. Thank you for paying attention to the details. I appreciated it and felt like we actually got what we paid for. The whole home was comfortable and I loved the layout.
Big Bear Lake is the 'go to' destination for families due to it's close proximity to Los Angeles and 'four-season charm'.
In the winter Big Bear Lake is a skiiers and snowboarders paradise. With two ski resorts, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain Big Bear is the ideal mountain resort. The Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain and Big Bear Snow Play (the only inner tube parks in Southern California that have Magic Carpet uphill lifts that transport riders to the top of the mountain) provide hours of family fun for adults and children alike. When your day is finished stroll the village enjoying a cup of hot chocolate or enjoy an evening of live theater.
In the summer family and friends can enjoy all types of water sports in Big Bear including boating, the Miss Liberty tour boat, entertainment at the Performing Arts Center, fishing, para-sailing, jet-skiing, swimming and more. Be sure to enjoy a visit to the Big Bear Discovery Center and the Big Bear Historical Museum. End your day with shopping and dinner in the Village.
Don't overlook Spring & Fall in Beautiful Big Bear where you can enjoy moderate temperatures and a variety of mountain activities like horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, golf and more.
