The Anderson Valley is a well-known Northern California wine appellation. What’s not as well-known is its beautiful landscape: classic rural California countryside in the hills of Mendocino County. The valley is smaller and more naturally rustic than Napa Valley, but equally seductive, with all the civilized and wonderful amenities that characterize Northern California: a wine culture, a local sophisticated food sensibility, and stunning vistas through old-growth redwoods on the way to the coast and the town of Mendocino.
We have a charming and comfortable fully-furnished upscale guest house converted from a ‘barn,’ among natural oak trees for rental in the Mendocino hills: two bedrooms, two baths, a screen porch, a car port, laundry machines, a wood-burning stove. A third bedroom is used as an artists studio. The gated property is well-maintained. There are planted olive trees, wisteria, and climbing roses that complement the unparalleled natural landscape. The town of Boonville, the heart of Anderson Valley, is ten minutes from our gate if you want a great ice cream cone or a great cup of excellent coffee with a home-baked pastry. It’s all pretty hands-on; there just aren’t any corporate businesses here. Anderson Valley is a two hour drive from the Golden Gate Bridge, and worlds away: no traffic to contend with, peaceful nights, stunning stars in a clear night sky, tranquil days. (We think it’s sublime! A retreat indeed!)
Ideally, we would love to rent it on a monthly basis. There is a one-week minimum for rental. No weekend rentals will be booked.
We work in the entertainment industry; I am a writer and my husband is an actor. We split our time between a Hollywood Hills home and this home in northern California. This house is a tranquil, hillside retreat where we can write and create in peace.
Judith Auberjonois purchased this house in 2001
Peace. Tranquillity. An alternative to a faster-paced existence. A place to re-charge and rejuvenate.
We were looking for a quiet place to escape to and found more than we hoped for! It truly exceeded our expectations. The pictures don't/can't do it justice. If you are looking for a quiet getaway in a peaceful setting surrounded by lots of natural beauty - not to mention a very, very tastefully decorated and comfortable living space - then look no further.
Things that impressed me the most:
=The "barn". This has just been renovated and it was very well done. It is hard to believe that it was a barn. The kitchen has everything needed to cook a full meal...the beds - very comfortable (if I hadn't just bought a bed I would have inquired on the brand - my partner often can't sleep in a foreign bed but no problem here!)....the appliances and fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen are all new and modern....a comfortable reading chair... whimsical art pieces here and there that made me smile.
=The stars - amazing! Being away from city lights I expected to see a brighter sky but it was clearer and brighter than the stars in Death Valley. This was an unexpected surprise! We were lucky enough to be here during a meteor shower and witnessed a shooting star extravaganza. That was just an added bonus - sans the meteor shower the first few nights I just sat outside and gazed above, wishing I had a map of the heavens so I knew what I was looking at.
=The Trees - I loved the trees on the property. I am a tree lover and they all had interesting shapes and just plain old had lots of character (trees turn me on, what can I say?).
=The crickets - they added such a subtle, peaceful feel to the overall meditative setting. I recorded them in the hopes I could capture one of those moments at dusk - sitting outside the porch, gazing into the gorgeous view of the valley, listening, just being...
= The small town of Boonville - I love that small towns like this still exist. It's wonderful to get away from the hustle and noise of the city - even the suburbs - and discover that there are still places where the pace of life is slow and simple. Fresh produce, apple orchards, people say hello to you on the street... (be sure to get a copy of the local paper - the AVA. I'm considering subscribing...).
I am probably leaving something out. It is a wonderful place in a great setting with very nice owners. We left feeling very relaxed and very lucky to have found it. Although it was only 2 hours from home, it felt like we were a million miles away.
