Overview

Alford House Rental Photos and Description

This property is very private, back a long driveway on a quiet road, yet is less than 4 miles from the center of Great Barrington, approximately 20 minutes to Tanglewood (closer via the back roads shortcut!), close to Butternut and Catamount ski areas, as well as all the Berkshire attractions. Very close to some of the nicest swimming places in the Berkshires. Hiking nearby / and on the property.

On the property there are 8 acres of hiking trails, plus another 35 acres adjacent of trails, plus 90 acres across the road of trails (great for XC skiing in the winters too!). In the front of the house is a very nice open field which we keep well mowed, so nice to amble around in. Lots of outdoor seating too! And a fire-pit.

The house is a 2 bedroom / 2 bath house newly renovated; we are designers who eschew excess, yet enjoy comfort. Drawing upon our collection of mid-century furniture, we have outfitted the house with some iconic pieces. The house is fully furnished, yet deliberately spare, a blank canvas for you to use for a few days, a week, a month or longer.

It is perfect for a family or 2 (or 3) couples.

Upstairs is a HUGE BEDROOM, with king sized bed. It's a loft-like open sitting area with plenty of light, and also a small exterior balcony. Approximately the size of a nice large studio apartment, with high ceilings and forest AND mountain views. And a bathroom with soaking tub and separate shower. This room is also excellent for practicing yoga...high ceilings, wood floors; 6 mats will easily fit in here (and we can put you in contact with several excellent yoga instructors who will come to the house to give you private classes). Or put all the kids up here, it's like a separate private apartment.

Downstairs there is a streamlined COZY BEDROOM, like a large stateroom in an ocean liner...cozy does NOT mean cramped though. Full sized bed. Full bathroom adjacent.

BEDS are new pillow top mattresses, very deluxe and comfortable; 300 thread count all cotton sheets and duvet covers; down pillows, down comforters OR hypoallergenic comforters and pillows, as you wish.

The LIVING ROOM has a fireplace, a great desk for working / writing (and a fold out / fold flat sofa bed. Flat screen for DVDs, reasonably fast wireless connection as well, so you can stream films with a Netflix or Amazon account (there is a DVD library in the house as well; there is no network or cable television at this location).

There are sliding glass doors out to a small deck, and a step down to a large meadow and beautiful woods with hardwood copses, beech woods, old stone walls.

DINING ROOM is well appointed, good light, very convivial possibilities, seats 10 comfortably, but is not huge, you won’t get lost in it. Great light and views.

The KITCHEN is well outfitted; VIKING RANGE, with convection oven, vented hood, dishwasher, Cuisnart food processor, a blender, drip coffee pot, & French Press, also a coffee grinder. China is also mid-century; there is a lovely deck off of the kitchen, with outdoor seating and grill.

Small covered deck off of living room, and small deck off of upstairs bedroom as well.

Clean and empty 2 car garage + work area.

Washer / dryer.

Bicycles available, plus many other useful things. We live just up the road, and so are available if there is anything you need.

Excellent high efficiency / low noise hot water circulating furnace / solar powered for electricity.

Cost is as noted in listing, plus a cleaning fee and deposit, depending upon length of stay. Your weekly cost also includes as much as you need from our organic farm, including eggs. Locally raised organic meat also available (at cost).

We are very flexible about checking in / checking out. However unless you specifically confirm the times you're coming (and going) we must ask that you check in after 4pm, and check out by 12:00 pm

Thanks and feel free to ask any questions.

Oh - and a note regarding reviews - several of these reviews are from another site; we pasted them in. I put them in here so you could see that we work as thoroughly as we know how to do, in order to ensure our guests have a wonderful and memorable experience in this house. If there were a review with critical feedback, we would have posted that as well, and also responded with how we changed things so as not to have the issue occur again. This house is a serious venture for us, and our strongest wish is that our guests are completely satisfied. (and please don't take this as a challenge to give us a poor review!). VRBO reviews are marked as such. Thanks again!

About Naomi & Ron

Local interests:

Yoga, gardening, farming, hiking, cycling, skiing.

We do a variety of small things - house renovation and restoration, small scale farming, garden design, as well as product design and manufacturing.

We have lived in the area for almost 20 years, and know every back road, swimming hole, hiking area etc, as well as all the restaurants, cafes and arts venues (and there are a lot of all of them here).

Avid cyclists, we can direct you towards some excellent rides, from flat to hilly to 20% grades on dirt / rides to take with your kids etc (and we can lend you tandem(s) to ride with your kids).

We are also long time Ashtanga yoga practitioners and can point you towards an appropriate yoga facility in the neighborhood, there are many around here, most are pretty low-key and accessible (and/or we can put you in contact with instructors who will come to the property and give private lessons there - the upstairs room is an excellent yoga studio).

We have several houses available for short term and long term rental. We live nearby the properties, on a small farm with extensive test gardens; you are welcome to take a tour of our gardens, plus we can point you to some interesting gardens that are not often open to the public (plus many other places of gardening interest).

Please email or call if you have any questions about this or any of our other properties.

Why Naomi & Ron chose Berkshires

Near to Tanglewood, Great Barrington shopping, groceries, specialty shops, etc.

We live on a small farm up the road from this property. We're a design / landscape team - we were drawn to this property for several reasons - it's up high, and the woods on this property are far different than the lower woods where we are. There are excellent walking trails - old logging roads and farm paths, that run through hardwood forests - a beech woods, and several stands of old oaks, for example. The house is sited in an open field, but is in dappled shade at the height of the day; the siting of the house, for views of mountains in winter, open field, and a stand of birches, cannot be duplicated!

The house too, was very interesting; at first it seemed very awkward, but after several rounds of renovation, we realize that, like the woods, it's a nice confluence of factors which make it extremely livable, yet simple. The views out the sliding doors are very relaxing; the fireplace is great in the winter; it's a very un-fussy house. It's furnished with iconic Danish furniture, designed by Hans Wegner and Finn Juhl; these are original pieces, and while they are in museum collections, we like to use stuff like this every day, and we invite you to do the same..

What makes this house unique

This house is up a long private lane, not visible from the road; however it's less than 4 miles to the center of Great Barrington. The house is in one of the most beautiful parts of the Southern Berkshires - Alford. The 'Alford Loop' is famed amongst cyclists, a nice ride around the Alford Valley, which is farmland under conservation; beautiful views, rolling hills etc. There are hiking trails on the property as well as easy access to other hiking areas close by.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A five star rental. We had the most relaxing, wonderful week at Ron and Naomi's house. The location is lovely, Alford really is a perfect little pocket of the Berkshires. The privacy of the manicured yard was exactly what we were hoping for and we spent lots of time relaxing in the hammock. The vegetables and fruit left for us from Ron and Naomi's garden were all so delicious. There was even a gorgeous bouquet of flowers left for us upon our arrival, which was such a nice touch. The bed was extra comfy. The shower and bathroom was immaculate. In fact, the entire house was immaculate. The kitchen had everything one could hope for. The den is a great spot to watch a movie at night. All of the maps and brochures left for us really helped out and were totally up to date. I can't say enough nice things about Ron and Naomi, I highly highly recommend renting this house for a chilled out vacation.

the house was better than described and pictured. it's in a beautiful and remote location up a long driveway - quiet and peaceful, a true channel change from the city. but, it's still close enough to the restaurants in GB and several great hikes. we have 2 kids (10 and 6) - they loved it, spent a lot of time playing in the backyard. house is tastefully and simply decorated. very relaxing environment. we've stayed at a number of places thru VRBO and no one has left great coffee, bread and fruit and vegetables straight from the garden ! we'll be back.

Private and so, so quiet!

  • 5 of 5

Being from Miami, we were initially SHOCKED that we rented a house with no a/c! (It never occurred to us to even ask. Doesn't everyone have central air capable of blowing frigid air from March to October?) But the owners were right ... temperatures drop significantly at night, and with cross-ventilation and a well-placed owner-provided fan blowing air, we slept comfortably. The house is exactly as advertised, but what can't be made too clear is the absolute privacy that you have at this home. We arrived late at night and followed Google Maps' directions down one dark curving road to another. When we turned off the main road onto the private gravel road that leads to the house, we were concerned that we were trespassing onto some farmer's private property. Passing one dark house then another, we optimistically kept driving through the woods. Eventually we came into a clearing and there was the house. (Thank you Ron for turning on the lights.) Although the owners had recently made some cosmetic changes to the exterior, it was clearly the right place. Our hosts had texted us that they had left some coffee beans (excellent!), local farm-fresh milk, fresh-baked bread, gazpacho (yummy!), eggs from their own chickens, and a chocolate bar; that plus a last-minute stop on our way to pick up some cheese, sausage, wine and beer, provided us with dinner and breakfast the following morning. (Good thing, because stores and restaurants close early in the Berkshires.) There's a great little deck right outside the kitchen, and we sat outside to appreciate the quiet, starry night. Kind of buggy but the next night we 1) turned off the exterior light, and 2) added citronella candles, and all was much-improved. Most important to us - comfortable king-sized bed upstairs in master BR, great linens, clean bathrooms with good water-pressure, excellent gas stove and coffee maker. Our hosts were very responsive to our many questions, and although we didn't have the chance to meet them, they thoughtfully dropped off some fresh beans and flowers towards the end of our stay. What could have been better? Window coverings! My husband turned to me in bed our first morning and said, "Did you know that it begins to get light about 4:30am here?" Yes, a little light control would help. (The downstairs bedroom had room-darkening shades, so my sister missed the sunrise when she spent the night.) This was our first vacation rental, and we'd absolutely do it again!

Owner's Response: Hi Beth, thanks for your nice review. So sorry about the window shades! We just replaced the windows in that upstairs guest room, and I forgot to reinstall them. Really sorry! A % off as an apology when you return. And re a/c - people are always surprised, and then get used to the idea of the house cooling down at night. There ARE a few weeks here and there where it stays hot at night, but mostly nights are cool. We've found if one has a house with A/C, it gets turned on, and then people stay in the house all day...there's not that connection to the idea of 'let's go outside for a walk down to the river', which is the quintessential Berkshires way of life. Glad you took the plunge here, and hope to meet you next time (I think we were traveling most of the time you were here, dropping our son off at an Outward Bound Course as well) Thanks again! and happy travels, Ron & Naomi B.

Away from it all!

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I stayed here with our dog for 5 days in June.

Ron is extremely attentive to pre-arrival communication, and was no different once we got into the house.

Any questions were promptly answered via text.

The house is exactly as shown- very clean, modern, and uncluttered. This is why we chose this house, and it doesn't disappoint. the furniture and furnishings are very chic for what most would consider a vacation home.

certainly heads about most things you see available online.

The house is just off the street, but sits at the end of a winding dirt driveway that makes you feel further from things than you actually are. The yard is enormous, well maintained and secluded. Lots of grassy open space for dogs to play- plus a nice deck, firepit and hammock, all surrounded by woods. Trust me when I say, you will not be bothered or hear a thing. It's almost like being on a private island. Nights are especially quiet and peaceful for sleeping.

What they say is true! You will arrive to a bounty of goodies when you walk in. for the two of us, what was left for us (bread, jam, oil, chocolate, greens, herbs, coffee, milk, egs, etc) was enough basics to last us the 5 days we were there, along with a few trips to Guidos for proteins.

the following is not a negative-but I feel its worth mentioning.

While there is a TV screen, there is no cable, satellite or antennae for viewing programs. It's basically set up as a DVD screen. If you need entertainment- I suggest to make sure you bring a LAPTOP and not a tablet, because the laptop can easily attach to the screen via the existing cables/ports. You may also want to load your device with shows/movie/music before you arrive, as we found the internet too slow to stream or download. I would also advise this for music, as trying to stream pandora or spotify did not work for us. If you don't bring entertainment there is also a redbox at the pricechopper the next town over.

(typically this would have been a non-issue for us, but during our stay there were a few days of rain that kept us housebound. most days we were out and about "unplugged", or hanging in the yard reading and relaxing)

all in all, we had a very nice time. Definitely would recommend the location, house and owners to others looking for a place in the Berkshires.

Owner's Response: Hi Michael - thanks for your review, glad you liked the house. A note about the internet - it usually is possible to stream films and music, your experience was not typical. Sorry to hear of it; had you alerted us, we would have been in touch with the ISP to straighten it out immediately [we use the same service at our house across the road, and all was fine during the time you were here] While there is no cable / TV connection, Amazon and Netflix do stream easily; and there is an iPod with 60 gigs of music in the library, as well as a small collection of DVDs - approx 40 - which we are adding to all the time. Should you come back, I will make sure there is a laptop there for you in case you don't bring one. Thanks again, Ron

Berkshire Vacation Perfection

  • 5 of 5

Myself, my husband, and two boys (3 and 4 years old) came for a stay at this lovely cottage over the long holiday weekend and we had the most amazing stay! Right from the start, Ron was so friendly and responsive, answering all of my questions about the cottage and the area, as well as offering his own insight on things to do or ways to enjoy ourselves more. Directions were easy as pie and upon arrival we found our farm fresh eggs and greens, local coffee, and a few other local delights waiting for us as well as some toys for the kids! All of us were elated! Even without our little welcome package, the cottage was impeccably clean and offered all of the necessities we could need for the weekend and more. The yard was my favorite part! It was huge with beautiful green grass, surrounded by gorgeous trees, boasting a hammock right at the edge. We spent many an hour just enjoying the peace and quiet of the space and grilling food.

I have already recommended this place to a few of my friends and would highly recommend to anyone who asked (or didn't for that matter) - families or just friends, or definitely a romantic getaway.

Beautiful and secluded home in the Berkshires

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here. The house is well appointed and comfortable, with beautiful views. It's very close to Great Barrington. And Ron is a gracious and extremely responsive host who provided a lot of great recommendations for the area. We particularly enjoyed the farm-fresh eggs and locally roasted coffee. We will stay again...

Holiday weekends - with great reluctance, we have changed the rate and request a 3 day stay for holiday weekends. We had noticed that often we were being booked way ahead for 1 or 2 nights only on a holiday weekend, which then prevented us from booking for the whole weekend. Regardless though, if you need to book shorter for a holiday weekend, just ask! Thanks, Naomi & Ron
