Warm and inviting home with spectacular views. There is a large family room on each level. The upper level boasts living room windows to capture the ocean views along with a huge patio deck for entertaining or to simply relax with the sounds of the ocean.
Two bedrooms on the upper level (one queen and one with twin beds) and efficient kitchen complement this home.
Walk out to the ocean from the lower level which has the second bathroom and a double in the bedroom.
Only a short ferry ride away, it seemed like a different world on Mayne Island, so quiet and relaxing. This house was so equipped, it felt like a home away from home. My kids spent hours exploring the beach, while we enjoyed our time reading books and listening to music. The music collection was amazing! The cookbook selection was so extensive that my 12-year-old was inspired to make his first meal ( successfully! )
Thanks Kate for sharing her house with us! We had a marvelous time!
The only disappointing part of this vacation was having to leave. We felt relaxed and at home from the moment we got there and the amazing views meant we never even turned on the TV. The whole place is clearly meant to entertain and make people feel comfortable - and we jumped right in to doing so. Even with a toddler it only took a couple minutes to put some breakables up high and we could all eat well and watch the wildlife and the waves. I agree with another reviewer that I want to sing the praises of this place but also want to keep it as a secret for ourselves.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were amazed at the amenities provided by Kate and Jurgen who completely opened their home to us. The view was incredible and we spent most of our time on the large deck. One of the more intrepid in our group even went for an early morning swim in the ocean. It is about a 50 minute walk into the town where we found a grocery store, nice pub, and great ice cream. Mayne Island is a very friendly place and our hosts were extremely helpful and accommodating. Fran, the manager, was also a gem. A great holiday destination.
What a fantastic vacation we had here.. At the moment we arrived in the main room upstairs my jaw dropped at the stunning view of the ocean. This will be my favourite memory of Mayne..What a treat to watch the wildlife, boats and tide changes..all from the living room. I was so sad to leave this on the last day! The house is very 'homey', well decorated and we found everything we needed.. the kitchen is great! The deck is huge and it was such a pleasure to sit out there and watch the seals and eagles while we had coffee or barbequed..The kids loved the musical instrument selection on the lower floor and it was great to have the extra space there for them to play. We would often go for walks on the rocks below at low tide..could go all the way to Georgina Point Lighthouse even! Oyster Bay nearby was the best spot for finding sea stars, shells, oysters, clams and watching the seals sun themselves on the rocks. We even saw some Orcas in the distance from here one evening. The owner and housekeeper are very easy to deal with which is always a bonus..I would definitely recommend this house!
From the moment we walked in the door the house felt like a haven of warmth and comfort. There are wonderful views from the upstairs great room with its panoramic windows as well as from the spacious deck, and a multitude of opportunities to view Island wildlife. We saw harbour seals, ermine, families of otters, blue herons, hummingbirds and sapsuckers all without leaving the property. For those who can get down to the shore level there are a myriad of rock pools to explore which harbour purple and orange sea stars, crabs, oysters etc.
Inside the property, keen cooks will enjoy using the cookbooks and kitchenware, especially if they have bought produce from the amazingly well-stocked farm store or the other two supermarkets and bakery on Mayne. Music lovers will enjoy sampling the music and CDs from the extensive collection in the lower great room. The owners wide and varied interests and achievements are reflected in the house but we never felt that we were intruding, more like visiting friends.
We were lucky enough to catch the MayDay parade and fair on our first full day on Mayne and it was delightful. To be highly recommended if you're travelling at this time of the year. All in all we had a wonderful week in this property and a wonderful week on Mayne. It was definitely worth the long trip from England!!
I live on an island (Manhattan, NY NY) which I enjoy. I recently returned from another island (Mayne, BC Ca) with which I am in love. They are perfect complements in my life – Manhattan is chaotic (but gorgeous); Mayne is tranquil (and even more gorgeous). People on Manhattan are interesting; people on Mayne are also interesting, but friendly, calm and helpful. There are fewer Starbucks on Mayne (none), but everything you could need is to be found in the Tru Value Grocery Store, the Trading Post, the gas station, the Bakery and the waterside pubs. The roads are untraveled, the views are breathtaking, and the house in this site is perfection. The owner is a joy. It is only 6 hours from here (but a universe away in tranquility and blessedness) and I’m keeping my bag packed.
And review from Bellingham, WA, sister staying there too: This place is even more charming in person than in the photos. Every detail was well thought out, and there was nothing we could have wanted or needed that was not there, available for our use. It’s comfortable beyond words, and the view
was simply gorgeous. Totally quiet and peaceful, with many seals peaking up at us, herons, brilliant purple starfish along the shore, and orcas swimming by.
The local bakery makes delicious soup (and I don’t normally even like soup but loved this!), and there were enough locally owned restaurants to keep us happy at lunch times. We cooked dinner “in” because it was too beautiful to leave that perfect deck in the evenings. The week we were there went far too quickly. We’ve enjoyed 10 or 12 VRBO’s in the past, but this home and its kind and considerate owner outshine what we’ve experienced in the past. I cannot rave enough
Mayne Island is the perfect Gulf Island for a year-round destination. The temperate climate, beautiful parks, beach accesses and hiking trails, activities and events make any season a great time to visit. Enjoy artists' galleries, shops, and restaurants. On Saturday mornings (May-October) enjoy the Farmer's Market. The museum, built in 1886, as a jail, and the Springwater Lodge and Pub, which is the longest continuously operating hotel and pub in British Columbia are great attractions.
Georgina Point Heritage Park & Lighthouse and the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve at Bennett Bay or a hike up Mount Parke to a spectacular viewpoint are some activities you can enjoy.
Use the putting green at Dinner Bay Park and view the magnificent Japanese Gardens while there. Experience the surrounding water by kayak, canoe or sailboat. Try your luck at fishing!
