Comfortable, accessible 2 bedroom, 2 bath in the NC Mountains
About Deborah Thurston
Grandma & Grandpa built this house to be close to their grandchildren. Now we want to share this lovely spot with you
Deborah Thurston purchased this House in 1982
Why Deborah Thurston chose Newland
The Blue Ridge Mountains are a magical place to live. This house is right in the woods and has many windows so you seem to be outside even when you are in. There are many different birds, and a family of foxes. The cool evening mountain air is just the thing after a warm summer day.
What makes this House unique
After a day of shopping, hiking, walking, or sightseeing, this is a cozy and comfortable home to return to. It is near the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls & Linville Caverns. Avery County is centrally located so you can be in Blowing Rock or Boone in 30 miniutes or less or venture further to Black Mountain or Asheville.

Perfect For a Getaway to the Mountains
My son and I really enjoyed our stay at this house in Newland. All the details were covered in a binder which was convenient. Even had menus of good local restaurants. House was very clean and everything worked properly. Beautiful view day and night. Newland is near many of the best sites in the NC mountains. We will be back!
Really nice. Cozy. Spacious. Comfortable.
We really enjoyed it. Great living area. Location is good. Host is great. Living area is spacious and if in summer months twice as much space as covered deck around the front. I cant say a bad thing.
My husband, my 6-year-old, and I stayed here for 2 nights and had a wonderful weekend. Getting there was no problem thanks to Deb's clear directions and her kindness in leaving a couple lights on for us, as it was after dark when we arrived. The property was exceptionally clean and well cared for, and it was convenient to have a fully equipped kitchen and a fireplace. The view from the property is exceptional, and we were close to a number of great restaurants and activities. We enjoyed several hikes and snow tubing doing our short stay. We will definitely be back!
Great Mountain Getaway
This was our first family Christmas vacation and it was perfect. It snowed a little as we were coming in and the owners were very attentive and ensured we arrived and had everything we needed. They even had the fireplace up and running for our arrival. The house was nestled into a mountain overlooking the city below which made for breathtaking views and sunsets.
The house was a cozy respite from everyday life, so much so, that my wife made the comment that we should just stay there and never go back home. The kids enjoyed their time as well. There is plenty of character in the house and a good selection of books to read in your leisure.
If you do visit, make sure to have breakfast at Kaye's Kitchen, they had the best pancakes and eggs we have had in a long time. Plus the owners and staff treated us like an extended family and even showed my kids the flock of ducks at the stream that intercepts the restaurants property. We will be back next year if not sooner.
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at our mountain house. It is so beautiful up here, I am sure you agree that you have to see it to believe it. Thank you for your kind words.
Perfect with beautiful views
This was definitely the right place to stay. First off the owners were more than accommodating!!! We came from Florida and don’t deal with snow but We received
HEAVY SNOW while we were there and
Mrs. Deborah came out and SHOVELED the snow out of the driveway for us without anyone asking. It has a beautiful overlook showing the city of Newland and surrounding mountains. The road to the house is on a steep incline but the road was plowed and salted several times daily. We rented a 4x4 suv to be able to make it up to the house, like the owners suggested but on our last day we found out that the suv only had a snow button that changed the transmission into higher gear at take off and it wasn’t actually 4x4 but we still made it up and down the mountain, Although I would still definitely recommend a 4x4 to anyone going up there.
No the house is not a brand new home but isn’t the point of staying the mountains, to be able to get away from “modern life”. The house is beautiful and well taken care of. When you walk in, it just reminds you of visits to your grandparents house and you instantly feel at home. The owners have went through great lengths to keep the interior of the home looking like an early era cabin repairing and not updating everything so the place still has the at home feeling. Everything in the home has instructions so that you know how to work it all and even comes with a binder full of helpful instructions and even menus from local places to eat. It is perfectly located and close to just about everything to do in the northwest mountains. If I could I would not have left. I would recommend anyone that is thinking about going to the area to seriously consider this place. The pictures do not do the place justice, it is truly breathtaking and like I say the owners will do anything to accommodate you. By far one of the cleanest and best kept cabins we have stayed in, the inside was spotless and even the driveway and yard were clean of debris and even leaves which says a lot because the home has trees all around. We are planning on making this our regular stay and believe you will too once you stay there. And by the way the owner brought us 2 different types of cinnamon rolls that where UNBELIEVABLY GOOD!!!
Perfect mountain getaway! Great location!
This was our first time using VRBO and I was SO pleased with our experience. I will tell you that the real thing was even better than the pictures.
The location was great! The size was perfect for my husband, two girls, and myself! We only stayed two nights but were able to see so much. Only a short drive to the Linville Caverns, Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, and much more!
The cabin was so clean, the beds were comfy, and Deb was so helpful with information.
We can’t wait to plan another visit!
Located only 8 miles from Banner Elk and 4 miles from Linville AlpenHaus is centrally located in lovely Avery County. The house is a short drive from Grandfather Mountain, and a scenic drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway will take you to Blowing Rock and Boone. Go the other direction and you will come to Linville Falls. It is less than 1/2 hour to Roan Mtn State Park and only a little more than an hour to Asheville.
