About Gaylene

We (Daniel and Gaylene) moved to the Pender Harbour area permanently in spring 2011 from Langley, BC. Daniel is French-Canadian and grew up in a small town north of Montreal and is an amazing guy regarding anything electrical, electronic and has a great talent for designing and is constantly 'tweaking' our property to make it an interesting place to visit. He enjoys prawn fishing and other fishing and is often out on his boat. Gaylene was born in Vancouver, lived in England for 9 years, then on a sailboat for a year in the Mediterranean before returning to B.C. in 1995, and has travelled extensively. She loves gardening, rowing her little boat, bird watching, swimming, hiking, cooking. Daniel and Gaylene enjoy the wildness and serenity of the Pender Harbour area. By the way, ask Daniel to show you his new Slingshot fancy car or take you for a quick ride up (or down) the small hill to the wharf in his John Deere (if you want!)

Gaylene purchased this house in 2009

Why Gaylene chose Sunshine Coast

We had been visiting Pender Harbour for a few years, and dreamed of having a house on the ocean, and loved the house immediately when we saw it, especially the breathtaking ocean and mountain views. We are so close to the ocean, it is only about a stone's throw from the house!

What makes this house unique

It's all about the water view here! ...not to mention the peacefulness of the place. The air is so clean and the water is beautiful and clear. We love to watch all the boats coming and going. There is never a dull moment. Being on a peninsula, the house is very quiet - no traffic noise from road above at all! It is nice to walk, jog or bicycle around our neighbourhood. Deer, eagles and seals can frequently be seen, and other wildlife. The boat can accommodate a 28-foot boat for guests. There is a gazebo-like structure on the wharf where it is nice to sit on days if there is a breeze, enjoy the sunsets or watch seals playfully popping up to watch you! You could even throw a line in and fish right from the wharf. There is an area in the forest with water trickling from a natural spring, dripping over a huge boulder into a trough which deer and birds alike use often...very 'zen-like'! We also added an enclosed flower garden with a few herbs. There is also another beautiful area on upper level for guests - a gazebo with seating area. There is also an uncovered 200 sq ft deck that guests never want to leave (a nice addition to the 80-foot long covered deck that guests already enjoy). The ocean views are endless and the whole place is very relaxing. Sometimes guests have plans of catching up on reading, but find themselves unable to stop gazing at the view and doing just plain nothing.

The property is very private and about an acre in size and we give guests lots of privacy, unlike a bed and breakfast. The outdoor cooking area with 2-burner propane stove and small barbeque is another cooking area in addition to the kitchen in the suite. Nothing like being outside while cooking!

The unique property is on side of a mountain on Francis Peninsula Road, and there are seldom cars driving by, yet is only about 5 minute drive from Highway 101. No traffic noise!

Fabulous!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this beautiful suite. The view was amazing from every window. Gaylene and Daniel were very helpful in suggesting hikes in the area and local restaurants. When we weren't out and about, we enjoyed sitting on the deck, watching the birds, and taking in the incredible landscape. The interior of the suite was extremely clean and the king bed was very comfortable. Thanks again Gaylene and Daniel for making our vacation perfect.

Owner's Response: It was so nice to meet the both of you. We loved your positive energy and enthusiasm to see as much as you could while you were here, and were flattered that you chose to stay here as part of your trip up to Canada all the way from Texas! Glad you found the suite was up to your expectations. We hope you visit again soon. As you know, there is never a dull moment on the Sunshine Coast, especially when it comes to seeing wildlife. Wharf Waterfront Suite - Spectacular!

  • 5 of 5

Our four days at the Wharf Waterfront Suite were spectacular! From the moment we arrived Gaylene & Daniel were so warm and welcoming. They are wonderful hosts! The suite was immaculate, spacious and well appointed with everything we needed. The views from the deck are amazing. There are blankets to cozy up in while we watched the boats and wildlife. We saw so many birds and hummingbirds on the beautiful property we lost count. Daniel got a wonderful fire going in the outdoor gazebo. We had so much fun baking a pizza in the wood stove - you have to try it! We'll be back!

180° view in this home away from home on the water

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at The Wharf in Medera Cove with Gaylene & Daniel as our hosts. We could have stayed for so much longer but still got to see so much..the birds, sea lions, seals, old growth forest hikes and harbour views have been our fave! The home is set up with the basics for cooking so bring what you can over on the ferry. The beds are comfortable and the room spacious. The best part is that you are tucked away into the hill and feel so cozy.

We hope to go back again and see more Sunshine Coast with more tips from our fantastic host and hostess!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review Lorraine. You and your family were our first guests of 2016 last month and what a great way to start a new year. We always like to hear from our guests about their stay with us. We look forward to seeing you again, maybe next time in the summer, so you can enjoy some of the lovely warm lakes nearby (or a cold dip in the ocean!) and laze in the sun on the wharf or do some more hikes with amazing vistas...warm regards to you all. Gaylene and Daniel

Beautiful Views

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing weekend here and were in absolute awe of the scenery. Seals were doing their mating splashes in front of us, Eagles soared above and a variety of birds everywhere. Sitting on the porch was so peaceful. My daughter and I would sit there in awe in the morning in disbelief of what we were seeing. The accommodation was spotles and Gaylene and Daniel were absolutely fantastic hosts. Full of information, helpful and they even found a wine aerator for my bottle of Merlot. I wholeheartedly would recommend this place but make a note that it is not suitable for children under 10 as Gaylene indicates on the website. The driveway and path to the wharf provides you with a super glutes workout but for those of you not inclined to steep inclines, Daniel has the best cart to drive you up and down the hill.

Owner's Response: Hi Diana! Thanks so much for taking the time to post a review of your stay. Daniel and I are glad you and your family had a nice relaxing time here taking in the scenery and wildlife. Yes, Daniel's "Gator" is a great little vehicle if guests are either feeling not inclined to walk up the cement walkway that leads to the suite or just want a fun ride up. Fall is just around the corner and we are looking forward to crisp nights watching the stars beside the outdoor woodburning stove. Also, if it rains the guest suite has a wonderful extremely long covered balcony (as you know) to sit and watch the boats go by. Hope you visit again Diana. Cheers, Gaylene and Daniel

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was like visiting family without the drama, Gaylene

And Daniel are very kind and giving people doing what it takes to make you feel at home.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the view is amazing from our bed room and the deck.

The wild life is abundant with dear, fawns, seals ,eagles, otters and others.

The amenities are five star and very comfortable. It is a great area for hiking, walking, swimming and sight seeing. With our canoe at the dock we were able to go paddeling anytime we wanted to.

All told it was a very enjoyable time! Thanks you guys.

Owner's Response: Hi Blair! Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review. Having you and your family here was extremely enjoyable for us also. I hope to see you again next year (or sooner!) and hopefully you will all see killer whales next time, as they do come into the harbour more frequently lately. Daniel and I are so glad you had fun and it worked out so well to have the lift on the wharf to use to make it easy to get in and out of the water in your wooden canoe. It was lovely to meet delightful M (the culinary queen) and J...maybe I can get the little tree frog to sit in your hand next time!

All our Dreams Came True !

  • 5 of 5

The perfection of Pender and your Wharf Suite are unsurpassed! All of our dreams came true! Climbed Pender Hill, rowed into and around all of the bays, circumnavigated Francis Peninsula and hiked the Francis Park Trail - all magnificent! We loved the birds, your immense deck, the clothes line, the vistas - but most of all your kindness and encouragement of our adventure. Our dear little wooden boat - Loon - was properly introduced to Canadian hospitality and waters - deep thanks.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your wonderful review. We are so happy you had such a wonderful vacation in Pender Harbour and were more than pleased with everything. We do hope that you visit us again as you had mentioned to us...perhaps for a week! It was nice to meet such an enthusiastic, active couple, and we enjoyed seeing your beautiful boat tied up on our wharf - which was not for long as you were out exploring the coast so much! Hope to see you again in the near future. Gaylene and Daniel

Relax at a unique, tranquil, oceanfront hideaway, nestled on the mountainside of a peninsula at the entrance to beautiful Pender Harbour (over 50 km of meandering shoreline). You are our only guest in this secluded paradise! The 1,000 plus sq. ft. suite in the lower level of our house is the ideal base from which to do many trips! We’re only minutes away from many warm lakes. We are only a 3-min. drive away from beautiful Francis Point Marine Park. The walk is a 1-hour easy round-trip from parking area. Eco-sensitive area with many unusual plants. Small trail (through old growth trees) leads to sea and Francis Point Lighthouse – popular area for scuba divers and kayakers. Great views of Vancouver, Texada Island, and some Gulf Islands. Take a day trip to Princess Louisa Inlet (a beautiful, scenic example of a fjord on the west coast. The almost mile-high cliffs rise from quiet waters with over 60 cascading falls (best in about June at snow melt). Chatterbox Falls flows year round. Charter a boat and go prawn/salmon fishing! You might even see a killer whale from the suite. Sorry, but absolutely no children under 10 years of age allowed on property or in suite.

It is wonderful to sit on either deck and watch the boat traffic go by or watch the seals pop their heads up (usually early in the morning or in early evening), see the eagles soar, listen to the loons and ravens and various other birdlife...we have lots of areas on property to sit and take in the fresh air and just watch nature. You might even see a whale in distance! There is a small staircase above house through a small forest. If you like to fish you can do so off our wharf if you have a saltwater licence, or hire a boat for a day from a nearby charter and go out into the open ocean or take harbour tour with the SloCat. It is peaceful and beautiful here...many of our guests say they do not want to leave! I have a small fenced garden and also about 5 or 6 banana trees that luckily the deer so far have not eaten!
