This Wailea Elua Village oceanfront home is owned and operated by us, Ted and Katy Klinkenberg. It is NOT one of many VRBO properties that are actually advertised, managed, and operated by professional management companies on the island. This condo is our second home and we are happy to offer it to you as our guests. We have a guest services company on the island to take care of all your needs - housekeeping, maintenance, and concierge services as well as a personal greeting when you arrive. It is a short walk to Ulua beach and you can hear the surf from the unit and the lanai. We renovated our Maui home in 2006 and outfitted it as a second home for our family - granite counter tops, stainless appliances, new furnishings, flat screen TVs and more. Many of our guests return again and again.

We really enjoyed this particular unit and the entire property.

The property itself was very nicely maintained and the pool area was very nice. Lots of shade was available which we really enjoy! Our unit had a lovely view of the water and the sunset. It had a large balcony which we enjoyed every day. I would definitely recommend and stay at this property again in the future!

Our favorite condo in Maui

My husband and I have stayed in this condo many times since 2004. The location is ideal and the condo is very nicely updated. Step out the door to stunning beaches with great snorkeling, you can rent equipment right next door at the new Andaz Hotel (be sure to try Stand Up Paddleboarding!). Walk to many fabulous restaurants and shopping just minutes away. The sunsets from the lanai are priceless. We just returned from 12-days. We will be back again.

We have been coming to this condominium property since 1994, and keep returning because of its beautiful setting. The grounds are immaculate (a flower photographer's paradise), the sunset views are magnificent, a beautiful pool is surrounded by a grass lawn; it is just a very peaceful place to be. We have just returned from a 10-day stay in this particular condo, where we have stayed several other times; it is our favorite. Newly remodeled bath, an extremely well furnished kitchen (read: sharp knives!), comfy furniture (and king bed), up-to-date electronic connectivity, and because it is a second floor unit, has an unobstructed view of the ocean, and a lovely, private lanai, where we BBQ, eat, relax, and watch the whales and sunset. This condo is very conveniently located for shopping (soon to be a food market at the nearby mall) and dining, and for our daily beach walk. We think this place is a real paradise for relaxation. Surprise and disappointment

In planning our recent Maui vacation, Wailea Elua Village offered everything we were looking for, as did the unit selected. Both were accurately described in the VRBO listing and the pictures captured the setting guests can expect upon arrival. With that, a star for Elua’s beachfront location plus a second star for the accommodations and numerous upgraded amenities evident within the unit itself.

Surprise and disappointment began upon arrival when the local property management company, representing the Owner in a “meet and greet” capacity, pointed out there was an existing rodent presence on the lanai. Before our bags were even unpacked, two clear violations of trust occurred with this comment: 1) prior knowledge of an existing condition exposing us to potential health hazards and 2) no offer of relocation to a unit which was not infested while this problem was being resolved.

Instead, our dream vacation was consumed each of the six days with efforts to communicate with the local management company and directly with the offsite Owner. Although their responses were apologetic, both local management and the Owner grossly underestimated the severity of the problem. In an email received from the Owner, our reaction to the rodents was characterized as “phobic” behavior with “purported anxieties”.

Without question, the lanai offers a beautiful ocean view. Yet, we were repelled at the thought of using the lanai knowing each night rats (not mice) were trampling over it and the furniture leaving behind feces and urine commonly known to cause a number of diseases, sickness and serious harm to our health. It is true, the infestation was limited to the lanai, however the lanai constitutes nearly a third of the square footage of the unit and is promoted on the VRBO site as a place to relax and enjoy the sunsets.

Finally, to attain a five star rating and to be considered a luxury property, I believe the highest standards of excellence need to be achieved and consistently maintained with a zero tolerance for failure. Wailea Elua Village and the unit we reserved have five star potential. However, improved onsite quality control and Owner customer service will need further scrutiny to earn any consideration of moving up to the distinction of a five star, luxury property.

Owner's Response: After enjoying our condo for six nights, this guest returned home and sent me an email message requesting a 50% refund of his rental because he discovered signs of rodent activity outside on the lanai during his stay. There was no mention of this request while he remained in our Maui home and he never requested to check out early which would have been reasonable considering the nature of his anxieties mentioned above. A follow-up email message included a thinly-veiled threat to write and submit a bad review on this site if I didn’t meet his "request" for compensation. After submitting this bad review to VRBO, he sent me a final message stating he would consider retracting the review if I refunded 100% of his rental fees. Surprise and disappointment indeed.... With that said, here is some background information on periodic rodent activity in south Maui: The transient rodent activity was not specific to Elua 1402 or even Elua Village, but was by many accounts, a regional phenomenon. Occasionally, after heavy winter rains fall on the lower southern slopes of Haleakala, rodents may be driven down to lower elevations and spotted in southern Maui. This winter has been unusually wet. These episodes are not common and usually resolve themselves after a few weeks of drier and warmer weather. Unfortunately, this guest’s visit to Elua Village coincided with one of these events. During his stay, this guest notified our management company and me of rodent droppings outside on the lanai. We responded by providing additional cleanings of the lanai (at not cost) and the Elua Village staff set additional traps around the exterior of our building and throughout Elua Village. Additionally, a fruit-bearing vine was removed that may have been providing access to our lanai from below. Thank you for considering a stay in our Elua Village home. This is a beautiful condo with outstanding views of the ocean and evening sunsets. The unit has been totally remodeled and as advertised was spacious and comfortable. We liked that everything was in walking distance. Several good restaurants are nearby, as well as the Wailea shopping mall. The Ali'i housekeeping service was excellent. The beach area in front of Elua Village is fantastic for swimming and snorkeling. We would definitely stay there again.

Great Location & Views

We originally booked the Marriott (next door to this location) but after one night there we decided to look for a less cramped housing situation. This is next door and it worked out great. Ted was helpful and his on site staff made us feel right at home from day 1. This is a great location with great views. You can walk oceanfront to almost anything and have more room to stretch out than in a hotel.
