About Rod Desborough

We purchased the property in 1970 and built 'Uncle Bob's' in 2001 as our retirement, year round, week end home. In 2011 we built a new house to replace the original cottage on the property that was destroyed by fire the previous year. We now use the new house as our week end retreat which in turn makes Uncle Bob's available for use by others. We enjoyed our 10 years in Uncle Bob's and we are sure our guests will as well. We'll tell you the Uncle Bob story when you arrive!

Rod Desborough purchased this apartment in 1970

Why Rod Desborough chose Nova Scotia

Our family have been spending summers at the property for about 50 years . Easy access to a safe, sandy beach, warm salt water, lots of lawns, places to sit, barbacue and walk make it a special spot. We think the views from the great room and the attached deck are spectaular, including the sunrises.

What makes this apartment unique

Our location is 5 minutes from the town of Pictou which has great grocery, etc. shopping as well as the rich history of it's Scottish Heritage.

We have ready access to PEI via the ferry just a few minutes drive as well as being within a 2 hour drive of Halifax, and it's airport, as well as Cape Breton and all it has to offer. We also have some fine dining within a few minutes drive including Pictou Lodge.

Or just relax at Uncle Bob's and read, enjoy the views or the beach!

Wonderful "Home" To Spend Vacation In

  • 5 of 5

My wife, daughter as well as our 2 boxer dogs spent 2 wonderful weeks at this lovely property. It is decorated beautifully with many many amenities (laundry, dishwasher, cable TV, AC, BBQ etc.). The view of the Northumberland Straight from the second floor deck was amazing. Being centrally located for day trips to PEI, Cape Breton Island and Peggy's Cove was key for us. We were welcomed by Rod & Kay with a nice bottle of wine and our Provincial flag flying from the deck.

We highly recommend this property to any one looking to visit the east coast. Oh yeah - the rental rates were very VERY reasonable.

Steal of a deal!!!!

My mum and I had a mother/daughter getaway and absolutely adored everything about this place and its owners!!! Rod and Kay had helpful hints of little hidden places to visit and magical art galleries and so on. We could not have asked for a more well-equipped place with such fantastic views and hosts! Thank you so much for everything!!! We WILL be back!!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you Alison for your very kind review, we appreciate you taking the time to post it for the benefit of future visitors. It was our pleasure to have you and your mother as our guests even if for such a short stay. We hope the remainder of your visit to Nova Scotia also met your expectations. Please come back to Nova Scotia and see the rest of this wonderful part of Canada but perhaps when the weather is a little warmer and no threats of frost.

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at this amazing rental. From the moment we opened the front door, we were enraptured by the scenery, the beach and the beautifully appointed rental. Rod and Kay went out of their way to welcome us, giving us a tour of town and spending an evening telling us about the history of this lovely village. We lead an active lifestyle and this location was perfect for us to hike and enjoy nature. We would rent this VRBO again in a heartbeat. Thank you Kay and Rod for sharing your piece of paradise with us.

Peace of Mind

  • 5 of 5

Just do it. By that I mean rent this most wonderful cottage and as you leave you will be trying to figure out how soon you can come back!! I set a trip up to the Maritimes for my Mom as a b'day/ Mother's Day gift. I wanted it to be perfect and it succeeded on all levels. Communication and response with Rod was immediate. There were no surprises. The pics do not do Uncle Bob's justice. It is far better. Everything you need is there except for your groceries and the basics are there as well. It is not far from town and is far enough to feel like no one else is around. All amenities were in perfect running order incl the wifi. It is amazingly clean considering it is at the beach. Safety was not a concern. It is a great starting off point for day trips to PEI, NB and CB and just a short drive back to Halifax to the airport.

Rod and Kay were most gracious hosts. They were kind, generous, accommodating and looked out for us.

On our last day, the water heater broke. However, it was after we had showered so was not an issue. Rod and Kay, not knowing we were fine without hot water, put a note on our door(to be seen in the AM before we left for a very early 0600 flight) and emailed me to make sure to let us know and to come to the main house to shower/ get ready, regardless of the time!! In all honesty, we were not even aware there was a prob as we washed clothes in cold water anyhow, lol. But, going above and beyond is what they do and what you will get here and we hope we can back to enjoy everything again. Highly recommend it to anyone.

Owner's Response: Kay and I really appreciated your very kind comments. We are also extremely pleased your "gift" for your Mum met all expectations. We are fortunate to have excellent tradespeople to look after issues on an emergency basis. The new water heater was installed by noon of the day of your check out thanks to Mike. All the best and perhaps you will come our way again. Rod and Kay

Brae shore rental exceeded expectations

Uncle Bob's cottage had everything you could hope for and more. We were so pleased with our accommodations, Rod and Kay were excellent hosts, they even had the best weather ordered for us. Our two furries loved the space to run and explore, it had our family totally satisfied. We would recommend it to anyone!

Love this Gem!

  • 5 of 5

We were hesitant to give a review because we wanted to keep this secret for ourselves so we wouldn't have trouble re-booking ;)

But Rod and Kay were so helpful and deserving of all the 5 stars they get. Uncle Bob's was so well stocked we didn't want for anything, from the washer/dryer to all the soaps and toiletries we needed. I am a neat freak and I loved this place for how clean and organized it was. My parents stayed at another property in Pictou, not owned by Rod and Kay and it was not nearly as nice. If you are looking for a secluded retreat, right near the ocean with your own beautiful beach, this is the place! Our 6 and 8 year old loved walking the beach and collecting shells. We even went into the water in June, at about 58 degrees! Much warmer in August we hear. Thank you Rod and Kay for such a lovely week!

Owner's Response: Christine, thanks for your kind comments - we are so pleased you and your family enjoyed your stay. I do regret not getting the kayaks out of the barn for you folks before we left for Halifax. Based on decades of experience we honestly believed the water temperature at the time of your visit would not have been suitable or enticing for sit on kayaking but you did swim so proved us wrong! Thanks again for taking the time to post a review.
