Very Nice Place to Stay with some Minor Issues

  • 4 of 5

My wife, daughter and three grand kids stayed here for five days in early August. On the plus side, the house is clean, nicely kept up, and well appointed. The view of Lake Michigan, especially at sunset, is exquisite! The beach is five minutes away and right adjacent to Meinert Park and some great sand dunes that were fun to climb. On the minus side, the lower level smells a little dank (a humidifier would be useful). The stairs to the house, about 50, are uneven railroad ties with no railing. This can pose a problem to someone with mobility issues. (My wife, who has arthritis had a problem with the stairs.) Depending on the number of cars used (including visitors), parking can be a problem with the two-space limit. Another reviewer mentioned a too slow internet. It is slow but works. That's about it. I'd say this house would be ideal for a younger family or group but not for oldsters.

Nice Week

  • 4 of 5

Our family of four had a nice week at the beach. Kate's is, overall, a nice place. The steps up to the house were not a problem for us, but for someone with health problems it could be a big challenge. The 2 baths were nice, and the view is amazing! The kitchen was nicely equipped, and it was nice to not have to bring linens or towels of any sort. On the negative side, a couple of the sliding screens did not work properly, and the internet was painfully slow. So much so that unless updated, my family would not stay again. The place was clean, except having carpet in the kitchen was a bit icky. We did visit Country Dairy a couple of times for ice cream and pizza - a must when in the area!

Great View but watch your step....

  • 3 of 5

We rented this property, Aug 4-8. The house is perched high above Lake Michigan. There are no trees to spoil the view of beautiful Lake Michigan and the sunsets. The house comfortably accommodated three adults and three young children with a little doubling up. Specific Pros and Cons follow:

- House was extremely clean and well appointed with furniture, appliances, etc.

- A lot of nice decking, front and back, and on both floors

- The beach is a five minute walk from house and directly adjacent to Meinert Park and some wonderful sand dunes that are fun to climb.

- Front deck and upper living room offer a great view of sunsets.

- Steps, approx 50, from parking area to house are uneven and a bit treacherous for older people. No railings. My wife has arthritis and they were a problem for her. (People with no mobility issues should be fine, however.) Also, steps are slippery when wet.

- Lower level of house was a bit damp and smelled of mildew.

- Parking can be an issue. Officially, there is room for two cars, but you can cram three cars into space by parallel parking third car behind other two cars. No cars are allowed on the Lost Valley road.

High up and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is bright with a spectacular view of Lake Michigan and the magnificent stars on a clear night. We enjoyed ourselves! The living room/dining room/kitchen area was perfect where family could congregate. We used the large deck everyday. The sandy stairs up to the cottage from the parking below need some weed whacking and a couple rail road ties re-positioned but otherwise fine. The dune you see on their photos is what you walk up and the flight of steps. It is no problem but those with walking issues should know. The beds were very comfortable and the place was clean. There is only parking for 2 cars. Guests park 1.3 miles away which is fine if you know it ahead, which we did. The owner came to deliver a grill brush when I mentioned that we couldn't find one. He didn't have to come but he made sure we had everything needed. We were very satisfied. Thank you!

It's all about the lake!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely property with wonderful, expansive views of the lake. The main floor is open and all about the lake. The LR has a sort of casual/elegant 70's feel with comfy seating and sliding doors out to plenty of "deck with a view". The listing represents it well.

The property was clean & ready for us as we walked through the door. There are plenty of towels, etc. The kitchen had everything in terms of dishes that we needed. Snoop in closets to discover all the household things you didn't realize were there!

The beds are comfy and the house comfortably sleeps 6. A note for those who mind (we didn't): There's no AC; there are stairs up to the house; the cell coverage is poor. There's plug-in internet, though, and a landline.

All these things didn't really matter to us, as we were there for the home/lake/sunsets/beauty, which the property had in abundance...we felt so at home! Rhonda & SHPS were lovely, and we would certainly recommend them & this property!
