This 17th century property is located in the heart of downtown Christiansted. The property comprises of two buildings. A main commercial/residential structure that faces King St and a smaller building both characteristic of the Danish West Indian style. This one bedroom apartment is the downstairs of the smaller building and nestled in the back courtyard. It features a full kitchen, bathroom and living room/dining area. Both adorable and affordable this is a great vacation rental option for singles and couples who want to immerse themselves in small-island town life.
We are one block away from the best bakery in town where locals line up every morning to get Crucian style 'titi bread' 'butter bread', 'bush tea' and other breakfast favorites. In a two to three block radius are some of the best local food spots serving up dishes like roti, stewed oxtail, curry goat, salt fish and ducanna, kallaloo and other Crucian/Caribbean delicacies. We are also five minutes away from fine dining restaurants, historic churches and cemeteries, exquisite handmade jewelry shops, museums, nightlife, cool bars and restaurants on the boardwalk, great duty-free shopping, the seaplane (in case you want to hop over to/or are hopping over from St. Thomas) and even the beach! On the boardwalk you can organize sailing, jet skiing, fishing, and head over to Buck Island or the Cay for swimming and snorkeling. And because of the great town location you are just a taxi ride away from everything else that St. Croix has to offer. If you choose to rent a car there is agency in walking distance.
My husband is a musician and I am a visual artist. Although my family is originally from Barbados & Trinidad & Tobago I grew up in the Virgin Islands (both St. Thomas & St. Croix). I left to study at Columbia University in NY and then later at the Institute Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba where I met my future husband who at the time was studying to be an opera singer. We met my third day in Havana and have been inseparable ever since.
I currently teach at the University of the Virgin Islands, work as a professional artist and manage our real estate investments. My husband works in developing our new business (a Latin Dance Studio & Nightclub slated to open Sept. 2013) and has his own salsa band and Latin jazz trio. Since leaving Cuba in 2005, we have traveled many places in the world, but both agree that St. Croix is something special. That's why we have chosen to build our lives and raise a family here.
LAVAUGHN BELLE purchased this apartment in 2011
We were attracted to this property because we were looking for our own space to teach our salsa classes. We saw it on a Friday afternoon and had an offer in on Monday morning. We love the location and the historical architectural details. We did 80% of the work ourselves, but in true Caribbean form many friends have helped us along the way. This has been a project of a lifetime and a dream come true for both of us. But most of all we are happy to bring more joy and beauty into our community and share it with locals and visitors alike.
There are many beautiful hotels, villas and luxury homes on St. Croix that sell a particular vision of an island paradise. What this property offers is authentic urban island living. You will get a chance to immerse yourself in our beautiful Crucian culture without compromising comfort or style. If you want to stretch your vacation dollars to be able to experience the culture and all St. Croix has to offer, this is the rental for you.
I had a wonderful experience with La Vaughn! She was a wonderful host and helped to make my time in Christiansted a great experience. Location of the apartment was also within walking distance of many things like restaurants and the harbor.
This was my first trip to St. Croix, and it was a pleasure meeting La Vaughn and her family. She was very gracious, and her restaurant suggestions were on point. I especially liked Singh's and Harvey's restaurants. I didn't rent a car this time, but it is/was recommended to get around the island.
The apartment was clean and well-furnished. I initially rented suite 3, but was upgraded to suite 4 which was much more comfortable for my daughter and me. It's located near numerous restaurants, a grocery store, and a nearby shopping center. I wish all the best to La Vaughn and Rivert, and will definitely return.
This was our first time to the island and had no idea where to stay. I am really big about reviews and what people have to say so when I saw 5 stars on every review I knew we had to stay here. La Vaughn is one of the nicest and sweetest people you will ever encounter. She is full of information about what to do and where to go. She has a binder full of suggestions on where to eat and where they are located in respect to the apartment. She is well known in town also. All we had to do was say we were staying at Trumpetbush or mention her name and they knew where we were staying. Coming from a big city safety is always an issue. Not here. Felt very safe. Will definitely stay here again.
When looking for places to stay in Christiansted, my sister and I came upon La Vaughn and Rivert's apartment and we knew that we wanted to stay there and I'm glad we did. The apartment is perfect for two people with full kitchen, dining area, bedroom and bathroom. Very clean and well stocked. There's a TV with Netflix where during our lazy days we were able to catch some movies and tv shows that we were wanting to see. The apartment is centrally located with most things in walking distance. My sister and I don't drive and we got around just fine. We love to walk so we spent lots of time walking around the neighborhood. We felt very safe and people are very friendly! I loved the greeting of "Mornin" or "Afternoon" from people we encountered and I missed that when we got back home to Philly! If you want to explore outside of Christiansted a car is probably needed. However my sister and I took the shared taxis to Frederiksted which were about $3.00 each way per person. Just an FYI they pick up along the route for anyone that flags them down. Also it's best to go to Frederiksted on a day a cruise ship comes in. It's livelier then.
The apartment is close to the harbour area where there are restaurants, shops and the ferry over to Protestant Cay where there is a beach. The ferry is $5 round trip and takes about two minutes.
There is a Pueblo supermarket which is about a 20 minute walk from the apartment but my sister and I enjoyed the walk as it gave us an opportunity to explore the area. We were able to cook meals in the fully equipped kitchen which allowed us to save money! There is a smaller convenience store called Jiffy Mart that's about three blocks from the apartment which became our go to place for beverages, snacks and small food items. Also try Singh's which is down the road. Try the pates and Johnny cakes!
One of the most important factors in the overall experience of our stay was the generous and welcoming spirit of La Vaughn and Rivert. They made us feel as if we had known them for many years and were a part of their family/friend circle. When we arrived we were met by La Vaughn (and her beautiful daughters!) and after showing us around the apartment she took the time to give us as much information about the area as possible. She even checked in on us a few times to make sure everything was okay!
This great apartment, the beautiful island and La Vaughn and her family's generous spirit made this an amazing vacation for my sister and me!
From the initial contact with the owner, LaVaughn, it was a pleasant experience. She treated me with all the respect and courtesy anyone can ask for. When I arrived, everything was exactly as advertised on the ad. The room was clean, the location is excellent, WiFi, cable, and all the amenities are included as promised. I felt very safe in the area, which is always important and the property is gated! Mostly everything you need is within walking distance, like bars, the boardwalk, some restaurants, etc. HOWEVER, please rent a car as soon as you get to the airport as not all the beaches and activities are in the area, and you may want to go to Frederiksted and the rest of the island's beaches. There's so much to see. Do not miss out on sightseeing as taxis are quite expensive. Another huge tip: when you arrive, make a bee line for the supermarket and get some groceries as eating out is quite expensive. Again, all the kitchen utensils and cookware are included as well. Enjoy your stay!
This place was really perfect for two people and lived up to all our expectations and more. Great location in central Christiansted and all the amenities we needed. AC and wifi worked great. The apartment is part of a historic 18th century building and has just been renovated. Very clean and well-maintained. Also good parking facilities in case you get a rental car to explore the islands. The owner was extremely helpful and friendly and gave us great tips on sights, restaurants etc. Just nearby the property was a great bakery for your bread and morning coffee, and a small place with great local food was also close. I will definately recommend this property to friends and family. Owner is great and you are within walking distance of all the sights and restaurants of Christiansted.
This apartment was perfectly sized for my husband and I. Downtown Christiansted was a 5-10 minute walk as was the market and restaurants. On the occasion we needed transportation, the Taxi Stand was a short 5 minute walk.
The owners are incredibly nice and professional. La Vaughn took extra care to make sure everything was in order with our stay before we arrived and greeted us at the apartment with chilled water and fruit. She took time to recommend places to visit and eat.
I highly recommend the location and renting from the owners.
