Overview

Guatuso House Rental Photos and Description

IMPORTANT UPDATE... effective April 12, 2016 -- The road to our property has been re-graded and can handle smaller vehicles. This is good news for those renting compact and economy vehicles.

Gated and lots of room to roam. Meticulously maintained 65+ acre retreat with flowers and wildlife too numerous to mention. Over 3 miles of private hiking trails, many leading to fantastic vistas of the surrounding mountains, volcano and lake.

The main house is a compact 2,500 square foot open floor plan design with 5 bedrooms (1 queen, 1 full and 6 twin) and 2 bathrooms and sleeps 10. Each bedroom has great views. Full kitchen inside with local hand made cabinetry and a local hand made eat-in dining table that seats up to 10.The veranda on the back of the house is huge with great views of the lake and has a working wood stove that can serve as an outdoor kitchen. All linens, towels and kitchen utensils onsite. Be sure to check out our Video of the house and furnishings.

We have a 1 acre private natural swimming pond with platforms and swimming ladders for ease of use. Make sure you check out our photos.

We have many banana, pineapple, orange, mandarin, grapefruit, lemon, lime, breadfruit trees and more. You are welcome to enjoy all that the property has to offer.

We have an experienced property manager (English speaking) and two gardeners that keep the property meticulously maintained. Upon arrival, please feel free to ask what fresh fruit is available so our gardeners can deliver some to your door or pick it for yourself.

We are able to assist with planning and reserving many exotic adventures such as boating, biking, zip-lining, horseback riding, nature hiking, white-water rafting, hot springs, cave exploring, kayaking, canoeing and more... Cost for each tour is different and information is made available after confirmation of booking.

We are only 2.5km (1.5 miles) outside the Town of Nuevo Arenal. Close to shopping, tours and dining. Our location makes a perfect base for those wanting to explore all Costa Rica has to offer or just relax and enjoy our property and the many species of flora, fauna and wildlife.

If you are looking for smaller accommodations for up to four persons, please check out our Blue Butterfly Cottage -- a perfect cottage for one/two persons -- cozy, clean and comfortable VRBO Listing #508655

Please note: If you are planning to rent a vehicle, make sure it has high clearance. 4X4 is not really necessary but something with high clearance is... something like a mini-SUV or larger. We strongly recommend something larger than a compact or economy car. Although the roads are safe, they can be bumpy especially after rainy season and the road to our property is not paved.

About Bret Fields

We stumbled upon this property and immediately knew it was special. We have worked hard to keep the property pristine and to keep it as natural as possible. We hope our guests can appreciate the natural beauty this property has to offer as much as we do.

Why Bret Fields chose Alajuela Province

Our property is situated approximately 1.5 miles (2.5km) above the town of Nuevo Arenal.. There are over 3 miles of roads and trails throughout the property, several ponds, and many species of flora, fauna and wildlife. In addition to the 7-8 springs/creeks that run through the property, we have a 1 acre naturally refreshed swimming pond that is great for a refreshing dip after a long hike.

What makes this house unique

We have many exotic orchids that grow on the property and our property is host to endangered wildlife.... safe but endangered. You will also see many different varieties of birds and flowers that make Costa Rica the most bio-diverse country that it is... please enjoy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The listing was very accurately described. Don't be afraid of the 3 km dirt road up to the property. Ya its a little rocky, ruff, and steep in a section or two but it just adds to the amazing experience you will have. Remember that your in the rain forest.....and yes its going to rain (a lot) but the road is more rock than dirt so its just fine. The house and grounds were really well cared for. The house was cleaner and nicer than expected. Bret will give a suggestion on a local restaurant that has amazing food and a great view of the sun setting over Lake Arenal....take his advice just don't wait until the last night like we did because its amazing. Yes, its a little hard to find but really well worth the effort.

This was exactly what we needed! Rooms were large, great views of the sunrise and sunset. The property is very well maintained, the owner and staff were very helpful and courteous. Great stay, would do it again.

Paraiso is an understatement.

We enjoyed ourselves so much we didn't want to leave. The property was so beautiful And the house was comfortable for more that 8 people. Hiking was our only option due to the swim hole being renovated. Otherwise this was a top notch stay, would do it again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. We are glad you had a great experience. Sorry about our swimming pond but now we have it finished... we were hoping to have it completed before your arrival but the weather does not always cooperate. Please consider staying in the future.

A really great location for relaxation, and jumping off point for adventure.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the main house, which is very well furnished, comfortable, and had plenty of room for our group of eight. The house and outside covered patio is a great place to relax and enjoy, and the property provides loads of roads and trails to explore, with many clear vantage points to see the surrounding area, the lake, sunsets and wildlife. Some of the younger folks in the group made some sunrise hikes and saw toucans and other wildlife. And do heed the advice to get a high clearance vehicle - the approach to the property is over a pretty rough road. The location is also a great jumping off point for adventure. We all went zip lining, hot springing and hiking in the Arenal National Park. One surprise was the fantastic pizza a Moya's in Nuevo Arenal.

Our stay was great fun. This is a real gem of a property. Only downside was a temperamental refrigerator, so limit highly perishable purchases just in case. We would definitely go back, highly recommended.

Beautiful grounds, simple house, friendly staff

  • 5 of 5

As others have said, you do need to drive about 10-15 minutes on a very bumpy path to get there. The house is very comfortable and clean, and Henry was excellent! The grounds were beautiful- overall a very nice place.

A refuge in the jungle, off the beaten track

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at this home for a short stay while we were visiting various places in Costa Rica. It is up a dirt road (4x4 required) from the town of Nuevo Arenal, a funky little outpost on the shorts of the Lake with all the various necessities. From there you can get to all the activities on the north side of the lake, and around to Volcan Arenal.

We were met by the caretaker, who was very polite and helpful, and got us situated with the house. He even helped us find a dentist on short notice and get an appointment in town the next day, when our son developed an abscess. The TVs are nice and the internet worked great.

The house is on a large lot with no visible neighbors, and a view of the lake and the mountains. It has all the necessities for cooking, plenty of space for a group, and is surrounded by beautiful plants and animals. You really feel like you have the jungle to yourself. Ah, Pura Vida!

Wonderful Property and Estate

  • 4 of 5

We had a group of 5 stay at this home. The Property is amazing Very well kept and great attention to details on the grounds. An amazing amount of plant life, bird life. The home is very well build, very beautiful construction and ample space for our party. We enjoyed exploring the local town, Nuevo Arenal, all the residents were very helpful. We also explored Arenal National Park, the guide took us through the forest and up the old lava flows to get a wonderful view of Arenal. Certainly worth the effort to go. We did go in June, the begining of the rainy season, and it did rain a great deal. Without hesitation, a 4x4 is necessary and we did see trees down and a mud slide on the main road. One down side of our visit was that the house does not have a washer/drier and there is no conditioned space. Since it is situated in a cloud forest, everything is wet. So, when you return from a days hike wet, your shoes and clothes will stay wet. Regardless of that, I would still recommend this place as a destination!
